...at Coventry, in the dark, in 1973. In those days you could pass back to the goalkeeper, take your disability car into the ground and park next to the pitch, and clog your opponents whenever you liked. And commentators used terms like "gay abandon" which they probably wouldn't today.

 



I always though the ref had to keep his arm raised for an indirect free kick?
 
Why was it an indirect free kick? It was a straightforward trip wasnt it? At 3:04 on the video.
 
Sheffield Star ran a two page feature on the match inviting Coventry fans for their comments (an early version of Roy's a View From...)

The Star's always had a soft spot for Coventry.
 
Never their throw that led to their 2nd either.

Also the back pass rule is easy to spot and Silent talks about the indirect free kick difference but another rule change is relevant in that clip. Any clue anyone?

John Hope, wasn't it? Sometimes the bloke would take off and fingertip a shot over the bar into the kop and you'd question why he wasn't playing for England. Other times he would make Baxter's performance at Burnley look good. Once let an innocuous shot roll through his arms between his legs and into the kop goal at BDTBL. Step forward, Tom McAllister.

Woodward's free kick was a bit special, wasn't it? Free kick, on the right, wall lined up to cover the near post. He hits it past the left hand man in the wall and its the top right hand corner of Coventry's net. With power and bend. What a fucking player. Doesn't even celebrate.

I loved Alan Woodward. Fucking master of the game.

It could be said the ref was a bit crap, how did that song go ?

He played well for Man U against us in the 1-1 draw at BDTBL in April 1972. I thought we had a good signing when he came to us some months later (Hope had a knee op and was ruled out of action for over a year). His first game (after McAlister had his leg broken by Rodney Marsh) for us was in the 1-0 defeat at Liverpool when he dropped a simple catch for Keegan to score. He didnt really impress for us. Got dropped after the 2-2 draw at home to Spurs. John Hope returned to the 1st team in the 2-1 win at Burnley. In March we signed Jim Brown from Chesterfield
