Blades Players You Were When A Kid

You must be from frechville where both Steve Faulkner and Roger Wilde attended school. I was over the Cowie at thornbridge where apparently Best was meant to be filming. Great days on charnock rec playing up to twenty a side all ages with obviously jumpers as goals until it was too dark to see (or your mum came to get you). A great upbringing, and having long blond hair I was obviously TC.

Kenworthy was my hero as a kid. Wore the same boots as he did & chose to play defence in the same way he did as a sort of ‘sweeper’ centre-half.
Played for King Edward VII, Crosspool Juniors, Sheffield Boys & South York’s Boys & kicked a ball around Crookes anywhere I could. All because of TK.
Remember now a game we called Wembley that sounds a lot like your World Cup. And also “3 & In” where everyone got to go in goal.

I was TK too, although I was more of a 'fancy dan' luxury midfielder as it turned out, I fancied myself as a tough tackling no-nonsense type.

Ah, cheers Hodgy, didn’t know that. I was only a nipper at the time, all our players seemed indestructible to me. Can’t remember Billy missing too many games.

I don't think he did miss many games. I don't know the stats, but I remember a number of times standing on the Kop and wincing as the trainer manipulated the cartilage back into place. I think he was playing through the pain to the end of the season.

Think I was mostly Keith Edwards, if I did this today I'd be (most accurately) John Fleck.

I played same game in the 90's in graves park all the time, except we called it 'Wembley'

The i went home and played on my pc. All about balance mate
 
In 1954 I pestered my mother's life out to buy me a Blades shirt from Suggs Sports and eventually she relented .

The first time I wore it was in a 3rd . form Games afternoon in Concord Park and I was told to play inside forward so , naturally , I imagined I was my hero at the time , Jimmy Hagan .

We won 4 - 3 against a much stronger team on paper and I scored a hat trick ! Best I ever played as a kid .

Wearing the shirt and playing as my hero - coincidence ? I don't think so .

Would have loved to have been Tony Currie playing for us, whilst at the same time having Georgie Best's off field life in the 70's.

So, ideally placed to just drop into the park and play on the 'pitch' right at the top of the park near to the railings with games played across the slope. That's where we played. Could be a long wait for play to come back to the top of the hill if a couple of players got into a 'no-quarter given' tussle for the ball that took them down the hill.

Of course, there are not many flat areas at the top side of Meersbrook Park. The area at the side of the allotments is probably the closest. That's where Meersbrook Bank school sports day used to be staged when I was there although even that patch of grass had a bit of a camber!
 
Keith Waugh if I was in the net, otherwise Colin Morris, I even used to stand and then try and run bow-legged.
 
Another vote for Woodward from me. Although I must admit, I never pretended I was him. I didn't start going to football games until I was 12, so I'd grown out of pretending to be someone else by then, although I was still pretending to be a motor-car at that age, and would run around making engine noises and changing gear.

I was amazed by what Woody could do with a ball, the way he could bend it with either side of his foot from corners, to make it swing in, or swing out. I'd practice that for ages on the local rec. Even if no other kids were around, I'd be there with my orange Wembley Trophy ball, placing it IN the quadrant at the corner (not on the outside line of the quadrant, like these tossers do nowadays) and firing it at goal, making it swerve in to the goal. If I was playing by myself it was a bind having to run and fetch it back afterwards, but I'd spend ages doing that and I got quite good at it.

It's a long time now since I stopped playing competitive football. But if I am walking through the local park and see some kids playing, I get a really strong urge to join in, and if the ball happens to come my way, I'm sorely tempted to launch it back at them, spinning it off the outside of my boot, just to see if I still can? 🤔

Similar to you, got my shirt for Christmas 1952. From then on I was Jimmy Hagan in Endcliffe Park.

Yeah just walked down the road,jump over the railings and played at the top,we also played matches there for St.Paul’s in the 70’s,our main rivals were Mount View from Derbyshire Lane.I still have a runners up medal when we lost 1-2 in the cup final,Willie Raynes (Chillie) scored both theirs,he later played for Sheffield boys and for Rotherham at Bramall Lane on Boxing Day 1986

Here's where I used to play togger as a kid up at the top of the Valley. Red arrows indicate 'strips of grass' or as a last resort, Herdings Park, yellow arrows indicate garages/road cul-de-sacs.

It was basically set up, start playing, ten minutes in someone would be out,moving you on.

I was going to do a Ched joke until I remembered the wildest thing I've ever done in a Hotel was buy a bag of Mini Cheddars in the middle of the night as I was starving.....................

It was usually a Travelodge, which sadly lacked a minibar. I know how to show a girl a good time don't I*.........

*I did teach Ms Crab the merits of the big plate though
