I didn’t see the game - and I must admit I thought all the comments on here about it not being a red card were probably a biased view... but I just saw it on MOTD and... WOW!! Just WOW!!

How anyone could think there wasn’t a covering defender is completely beyond me. Bonkers decision.

I didn't see match of the day, what did the monkeys in the studio think?

So there aren’t any bad refereeing decisions in the Championship?
No ofcourse there are! But put it this way. That foul by Jags last night in Championship is a yellow card and stays a yellow card. The ref saw the situation and gave it as he saw fit. Someone 200 miles away in a box in a room full of monitors decides actually I think it is a red card. So the match official, the man given the game, goes to a monitor with his finger in his ear listening to this other official and decides that the images, which were still frames, not slow mo, not full speed, show clearly that El Ghazi would have gone on to get a clean shot away. Therefore its a red card. Its BS of the highest order. The decision is subjective and not clear and obvious. VAR is re-refereeing games. Might as well have the man in Stockley Park ref the game and tell the pitch official which way to point.

Or they could’ve given it as a red and that would’ve been that. No chance to overturn it.

We all saw it and it was clearly not a red card, if the idiot refs were doing their job properly they wouldn’t have sent Jags off.

Again it’s all down to the idiots using it, not technology itself.

So there aren’t any bad refereeing decisions in the Championship?

I’ll bet anyone there will be many many more terrible decisions in the Championship.
Often you don’t appreciate something until it’s gone.
Looks like we’ll be relegated...so we’ll soon see how shockingly poor it was pre VAR.
The only benefit of not having VAR is at least we’ll be able to instantly celebrate goals.

"Only benefit"
Isn't that release of joy when our team scores basically why most of us like going to football matches? It is for me.

When we got promoted many thought the introduction of VAR would be good for us, they thought that we would at last get treated fairly and not be the club that is always on the end of ridiculously bent and corrupt decisions.

If anything it's made it worse, we were the most harshly dealt with club in the League last year by ridiculous VAR decisions, and this season nobody actually gives a toss anymore because it's so corrupt.

There not even trying to hide it anymore, it's right there in front of our eyes, anything they can do to destroy us they are doing.

I hope our next owner is an out and out criminal, a billionaire crook that nobody can prove anything against.

Only then will we be allowed and accepted into this League, and the EPL will have to find another Northern club to fuck over. I'd feel sorry for Burnley as soon as this new crooked billionaire took over us

Has this bloke got something to do with Villa getting everything going their way?

So there aren’t any bad refereeing decisions in the Championship?
Not as bad as in the prem.I did warn our fans before we had kicked a ball what to expect in this bent league and the officials have not let me down.Evan with VAR they still get it wrong but the further you go up table the more they seem to get it right apart from when we were up there of course. The shocking farse at Villa last season was a good example (the goal that never was) which would have sent villa down but for some remarkable reason all three safe gaurds involving goal recornignition failed all at the same time even though tv cameras showed clearly it was a goal but we can't have us helping sending villa down can we.We had maybe the worst or in the top 6 total of negative calls with VAR in europe. Not as bad as the famous liverpool one though when they were awarded a penalty because our defender THOUGHT about fouling Gerrard and of course there was the West Ham fiddle .It is not just the officials it is the all set up that is suspect. The bigger the club the more you can get away with. The smaller the club the least you can get away with and if you are so good you should be wearing a halo they will event something to keep you down like awarding penalties for nothing to the opposition.

So if Jags was sent off tonight without the use of VAR that would be ok? A shit decision is still a shit decision, using VAR makes no difference to that fact.

He wasn't though was he, ref made the right call before VAR stuck its nose in.

Refs have and will make shit decisions. What we never had before VAR was referees making good decisions and them being overturned into shocking decisions.

"Only benefit"
Isn't that release of joy when our team scores basically why most of us like going to football matches? It is for me.

Yes...I agree...I was going to mention that “the benefit” is just about the most important reason for going to football.
I suppose in the PL there’s so much money that they‘ve decided correct decision or arguably correct decisions are more important that ref blunders.

Don’t agree. Think back to our days in the Championship....there were often 3 or 4 really poor decisions every match.

With VAR there are no factually wrong decisions....just interpretations of 50/50 decisions.
The problem with interpreting 50/50 decisions is that even with the most detailed video evidence not everyone agrees.

What you find is that virtually every fan is biased and has little objectivity.
Even managers when interviewed after a match...they agree with 50/50 decisions that go their way but then are critical of VAR if the decision goes against them.
This year VAR had evolved and is much better than last season...off sides seem to be better...with goals not being disallowed for a big toe...it’s still not perfect but I don’t think it can ever be perfect because certain 50/50 decisions will always be open to interpretation.

I’m sure VAR will be reviewed and improved further for next season. The areas for concern are

1: The over reliance of stills...these can be so misleading...refs need to see real time with more and better viewing angles.
2: The fashion of checking if there’s contact on penalty decisions. Now there only needs to be the slightest of contact and it’s a pen.
Where as refs should be looking at real time footage regards the amount of contact.
3: Dangerous tackles- these can look horrific on a still but refs should again view real time video footage.

He wasn't though was he, ref made the right call before VAR stuck its nose in.

Refs have and will make shit decisions. What we never had before VAR was referees making good decisions and them being overturned into shocking decisions.

Again it was a human intervention not the technology. A human will always make wrong decisions.

What about Norwich away last season when Bash was sent off, that was a wrong decision and VAR got it right.

They just need to use the technology correctly to make correct decisions. The use of video replays should improve decision making, but unfortunately the people using it are getting it badly wrong. That doesn’t mean we should give up on VAR, we just need people who are capable of doing the job correctly.

3 Villa matches. 3 refereeing controversies.

Come on, OK first time round I can understand (but cannot accept the reason) there being a problem with goal line technology.
Second time, John Egan red card, very surprised about at the time.

Third time, oh hear we go again.
It is common knowledge that United are playing with a skeleton crew at the back, no CB, JOC, JE. What better way to sucker punch them even more... using sneaky rules of the game. Without hearing the conversations the refs are having, VAR could be saying anything. The ref was within a good distance and had a clear view. He gave a yellow, as he would surely have seen the other defenders tracking back. VAR gets involved, shows ref a couple of stills and probably orders the ref to change to red. VAR had already made it mind up by the way and only asked the ref to come over as a courtesy to the fans and managers that protested that refs weren't looking at the incidents. Its all a show. Money. Headlines. Tweets. Lets laugh at United's misfortune.

As every season goes by, the Premier League gets more and more like the WWE.
Your comments sound a little 'chip on the shoulder' but interesting point re the conversation being private. In cricket the dialogue between 12th umpire and onfield umpire is audible so completely transparent process. In horse racing the transcript of a stewards' enquiry is in the public domain, so again no smoke and mirrors. Football should follow suit fast.

They said “no red card”. I don’t think anyone anywhere has said it should have been a red?
After the match on BT they went to their resident ex-PL ref (Walton?) who said it was a red, when they went back to the the two pundits talking about it they then both dodged the question of whether it was red or not, which I thought was very poor from both of them as it was fairly clear they didn't think it was.

The problem of/for/with refs is that they can't overcome their unconscious bias.
If the covering player had been Virgil Van Dijk (even injured), it would have been clear that he would have got across to cover. But who the fuck is Kean Bryan? No chance.

John Egan needed to pull back the Villa player in order to prevent a goal-scoring opportunity. Red card.
David Luiz (or whatever his name is) is such a classy player playing for such a classy team that he would never need to pull back a scrubber like Oliver Burke. Nothing happening.

Does anyone think that the reffing and VAR is actually bent? Or is there just an unconscious bias in favour of the big clubs?

It is quite simple VAR hasn't got rid of wrong decisions and like Jags sending off it made the right decision wrong. Therefore what is the point. If it were used for clear and obvious miles offside decisions or deliberate handballs then great but it is being used in totally the wrong way and is ruining football

So there aren’t any bad refereeing decisions in the Championship?
Yes there were and are bad refereeing decisions in the championship just like the premier league
BUT
there were not and still isn't any bad VAR decisions in the championship

What about the good VAR decisions?

What about the good VAR decisions?
There are no good VAR decisions because it disrupts the game dear me disrupts the flow of play ridiculous measurements to the millimetre. Goal line technology only oh hang on a minute that doesn’t work either does it
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Just goes to show how corrupt this league is:

Wilder on Jags red card
"We looked at it through the night and in the morning but on advice we chose not too appeal it. It would have been pointless.”

Can't believe they wouldn't appeal. Just on principle they should have anyway.
Shambles. Maybe Jags wasn't even set to play against Southampton? So maybe thats why its pointless 🤷‍♂️
But obviously it would fall on deaf ears, its like they are saying the VAR WAS the appeal.

Yes, Peter Walton and I’ve said this before but he always supports whatever decision the ref makes. Dermot Gallagher does the same, not sure if they don’t want to bite the hand that feeds them or whether it’s just solidarity. Walton even managed to find no fault with Lee Mason’s extraordinary WBA v Brighton goal/no goal/goal decision, thought he’d got it spot on.

Yes players can be sent off with VAR decisions but it should work both ways if the VAR ref screws up a decision he should be suspended as well.
Stinks to high heaven that Scott has had a hand in our two of our three cards against Villa.

The very fact that in international matches involving national teams from all over the world british refs taking on these games are virtually non existent compared to years ago speaks volumes .We must have the poorest set of officials in Europe some seem to make the rules up as the game goes on .Complete farce every week when watching match of the day every Sat night when you see one ref making different judgements to the next ref in the next match .What fans want is consistency ,they need to know that no matter WHO is playing in each match they are ALL playing to the same rules and judgments no matter how big or wealthy the clubs are from the smallest club to the biggest clubs .
