Presumably during the Falklands War thereabouts.

You are correct. In fact as we played on the Saturday v Bournemouth, the next day the Argentine submarine the Santa Fe was attacked and put out of action for the war, and then later that day South Georgia was surrendered back to the British.

Unfortunately it took nearly another 2 full months of fighting before the Falklands were surrendered (14 June).

Still probably my favourite season as Blade in spite of seeing some great ( and terrible ones ) in between , probably on the grounds as it was the first bit of success Blades of my age had seen after my first visit to The Lane in 77/78 and seen us slip from 2nd to 4th Division.

At the time you could go to any game you wanted to often the decision to go to an away game would be made on the Saturday morning ! Unthinkable now ..none of the ticket malarkey you get nowadays & very few of lower league games were televised or highlights shown , so you had to be there to see it.

Only missed 2 games all 81-82 season , Northampton away & Hereford away both midweek away games as I was still a young un and my brothers and other lads off the estate weren’t going so none starter with parents ..even went to a Radio Aire challenge match at the end of the season against Bradford and as car was full I was desperate to attend .. went in the boot of my brothers mate Escort Mk 2 for the journey up there could have croaked it from exhaust fumes and felt like I’d been a potato rumbler when I got out 😀

It’s really strange looking back from our lofty perch now to where we were then but I was every bit as proud to be a Blade ... some very memorable games & away days that season

That match was the one game my dad went to that season. He used to say "I've never seen United score."
United ran a TV ad on Yorkshire TV towards the end of the season. Typical of Brealey's ambitious, innovative thinking at the time. It featured a voice saying "UNITED, UNITED, GOAL!" alongside footage of Edwards MISSING a chance at the Kop end against Bournemouth.

I didn’t miss all season (or a few seasons either side too !) . Trusson with two v late at Northampton in a 2-1 win if I remember( got in free with loads of Blades through some bushes 🤣) and 1-1 at Hereford. The latter was freezing. Remember stood on terrace first half. They opened the gates at half time for some reason. We then sneaked in their side stand to shelter from the snow.

Remember the Northampton game well. We were absolutely dogshit that night and deserved nothing until Trusson popped up in the 89th and 90th mins scoring almost identical goals if my memory serves me right. Some of us actually paid to get in though..... lucky bastards :p

Will have gone to the Bournemouth game but it isn’t one that I remember. Very un Edwards like in missing those chances.

Was 10 years old that season and missed around 7 games all away from home. Went to Northampton but not Hereford
Agree, uncharacteristic misses from Edwards , but good to see that trademark running style of his again.

Always remember that season for the last home game against Peterborough. Ground capacity about 39000 was just about near full and the "official" attendance came out as 23000. In the pub after before the crowd as known we were having an attendance bet. Everyone gave it between 33000 and 35000. Weird.

Yes, certainly considerably more in the ground that day than the declared attendance

Tom Heffernan hitting the bar for Bournemouth. Did we sign him the following season?
Sorry, just seen previous post!

Aren't Bournemouth the only team we have played in all four divisions?

By the looks of the highlights Edwards should have had three and more often than not would have. As a few have already said it was a great season especially for us young uns that only started going post Currie and Woodward era. Up to that I'd only known relegation, my first season 75-76 relegated rock bottom, then relegated again in 79 and once more in 81. So that 81-82 season was special and we even had a few hero's on the pitch too, with Keith Edwards numero uno at the Lane. My first with a season ticket (lane upper) and did about 10 away games.

I like to think that my memory is still pretty good for an old 'un , but I have no recollection of our goalkeeper Woff who the commentator refers to several times .

Perhaps Silent or one of our other history gurus can provide information in respect of this gentleman . :)

Keith Waugh was signed from Peterborough I think for £90000 start of division 4 season he was a steady enough keeper highlight of that season being a last minute penalty save at Tranmere. A few seasons later he was the Bristol City keeper when we got relegated in the play off game

Whoosh!

I was there but remember Edwards missing effectively an open goal in the last 15 minutes, (it might have been the header off the line) but I thought he went past the keeper and put it just the wrong side of the post.
