Don't you worry about it mate ....... political correctness has been rampant in old blighty for years and you have to have a 3 second filter ( pause) before you say anything to anyone sometimes. It also seems that some people make a profession out of getting "offended" on behalf of various different minority groups as well which makes it doubly tricky for us normal "down to earth folk".

My acid test personally; as long as I know I haven't set out to offend anybody ........ then fuck em if they're offended !! :D

If I intend to offend anyone ...... then they'll fu**ing well know it !! ;)

Sorry ..... hope I haven't offended you mate :p

Spot on.

It's a sign of the times.

Let's all get offended,
Let's all get offended,
Na, na, na, na eyyyyy.

in all fairness, i think you are being a bit unfair, my story was about racisim, i.e. as i have already been told 'black people' if i just said a blade, it does not narrow things down, i seriously would like to chat to this guy, and by saying black, if he reads this he knows who he is and who i am, the white geezer who helped him. I am quickly becoming disallusioned with this site, as it seems almost a competition as to who is the 'biggest or best blade', i always thought it was about us, the supporters together, but now i am not sure.
But as always UTB.

Mate, my sincerest apologies if you thought I was acusing you of anything, or if I was in any way incinuating I was some kind of 'bigger blade'. There's room for everyone on here, especially good natured people such as yourself.

I wasn't trying to call you out or owt; I merely raise an eyebrow when someone says 'coloured', or words to that effect, in places where it needn't be. I'm a (relatively) young 'un, so it's a bit alien to me .

Any one remember Blades at Pompey, Jags (i think in goal), just after they were bought for 1 measly quid. we were waving 5 quid notes at their fans, which quite obvisually wound em up, our keeper sent off, then the the blade butcher from Brighton ran on the pitch and decked the linesman. Next to the "cop" was their so called family enclosure, full of Pompey scummers itching for a fight, i heard them saying 'lets get the nigger', a real nice black guy who always followed the Blades, (i would see him at many away games). When i left the ground there was about 10 to 15 twats giving the black guy a real kicking, as i had lived down south a long time (Southampton) i ran up and said,(in my southern accent) the Cops were coming, the nesh cunts ran away and i helped our coloured Blade to his feet. I was on the radio that night, radio 5 with that politician, mmm was it Mellor ?, discussing my distaste for the racisim at Portsmouth.
Any way, next away game i go to was QPR, and as always there was a Long que to get in the ground, as i walked down the cue, the coloured geyser popped out and thanked me for my assistance at Pompey, i always thought till then we all looked the same to them. He was a real big guy, but i think a bit of a softie, but a Blade !
Anybody know him, would like to say hello.

I was there. Another Tracey 'horror' show.

Pompey away 1982, we'd just signed Curran I think and the news on the way down was that we'd signed Alan Young, big money for us and we were pushing the boat out.

Pompey charged us £20 a ticket in the stand ( no half prices for our kids 8 and 5 years old and unheard of), and that was £80 and about twice as much as we'd ever paid anywhere else and we'd been to most of the best grounds. £80 in 1982 was a lot of money.

Just looked it up, we drew 1-1 (Edwards) and we were going places spending 'game-changing investment'.

All fell flat within weeks.

I wasn't suggesting for one moment that you were racist, mate. The fact is though, that the vast majority of black people don't like the term 'coloured'. It smacks of the Deep South and Apartheid. I suspect the guy concerned would prefer 'black'.

In South Africa, Blacks were not Coloureds !

thank you, i risked my bloody life to help him, if the pompey twats saw my shirt under my jacket i would have got a hiding too. fucking hate fratton park, nasty fans, shit loo(only 1 in those days, and people used to piss up against the wall right next door to the hot dog shop). Fucking scummers. But wish i had not posted now, after the abuse i am taking. Oh well, c'est la vie. UTB

I agee, they are pretty horrible fans and I've never liked them either. Growing up on the IoW I encountered a lot of them.

No they were not, but the term was nonetheless used to divide and diminish humans by the colour of the skin. Neither 'black' nor 'coloured' were complimentary terms in Johannesburg. Black South Africans and Coloured South Africans would have much preferred that neither term [and much more importantly, the inhuman philosophy behind the names] was in use.

A lot of names that weren't deemed offensive are now on the banned list.
Coloured, spastic, midget, Paki, Eskimo, Siamese Twins.....

In Jamaica, they had different names for grades of skin colour depending on the mix of Black and White blood.

Well, I was the first to mention it. Anyone who knows me will tell you I am far from politically correct. I was not offended on behalf of myself or anyone else and my response to Blade in Spain was not intended to suggest that I was. It was a factual observation which he may have found helpful, I don't know.

Mainly because they were Inaccurate, gross generalisations, derogatory at root or all three. Ignorance at the time can excuse their use, but not now. Conjoined twins weren't all from a country now renamed, Inuit is a more accurate name for those people, most people called 'paki' weren't from Pakistan (or Punjabi, Afghani, Kashmiri or Sindhi which is where the name came from), dwarfism or proportionate dwarfism is a more accurate medical definition, spastic means spasm which hardly does justice to the condition cerebral palsy or similar and coloured was a segregating term of apartheid, hardly appropriate.

Pinchy you are wrong. Absolutely and totally wrong. The term Coloureds came from the Cape Coloureds. Blacks were always Blacks. The Blacks were the Bhantu and various tribes. Strangely (or not when you realise the politics) Chinese were classed as non white and Japanese as white.

The Afrikaaner Government devised a parliament for Coloureds but the attempt at a Black Parliament was rejected. It is sad for me that South Africa has turned out like it has. For the main the blacks are friendly, the whites industrious and all proud of their country. If only the Boer War hadn't happened all the subsequent resentment, ideology, terrorism, unjustified killings just might not have happened. Should have turned out like Aus or NZ.

Absolutely nothing that I said was wrong. Where does what I say contradict what you say above?

Aaaanyway.

I was there. My lad was Blades mascot with his mate from school, both in Blades kit much to the chagrin of his dad, a Palace fan.

I knew Trace was mustard. The ref missed it, the lino didn't. Trace got carded, the prick (who was from Brighton, by the way and is still banned from all grounds, but from what I heard still attends the odd game) lamped the lino. He didn't quite catch him but in any case, assault is assault and I felt deeply embarrassed by that cunt. My lad's mate's dad turned to me and said 'Is that what you wankers are all about?' Shameful.

There was trouble outside as well, as BIS said.

Finally, I think everyone should chill the fuck out and stop getting all Sami Chakrabhati about the casual comments. Racism is this:

"I hate black/Chinese/Arabs because of [insert unfounded inflammatory reason]" or calling a race a defamatory term. The term 'coloured' is arcane, but so is 'guilo', which east Asians use freely when addressing Caucasians.

pommpey

If it's the same tall, black guy I'm thinking of who used to travel to all the away matches back then, he had some sort of learning difficulties and was often at games with a carer of sorts and used to travel on the club coaches. Really lovely lad and I'm pretty sure his heritage was Nigerian. Very sad indeed if he was attacked back then, I haven't actually seen him around in a long time, used to like seeing him about.

It's still quite rare to see non white faces at Bramall Lane despite that fact that Sheffield has become far more multi-cultural than it ever was in the 70's when racism was rife on every football terrace.

Thats general I think. The crowds at Upton Park are far, far whiter than the population of the surrounding area. Same at Spurs.

Upton Park is an extreme example, the whole area is non white, they all moved out to Essex years ago but the people who moved in shun football.
Spurs have attracted the Jewish population, most of whom will be British born of course.

The Spurs=Jew thing is overdone a bit I think. Besides, Jews are a minority round there.

I'd add also that lots of the people round Upton Park do support football, but support teams like Manchester City rather than West Ham.

Why would people living in East London, specifically of Asian decent support Manchester City? Surely they've all switched to Leicester now?
