Billy Sharp: How lucky we are

It's easy to forget that how much he struggled in his previous spells.

It's easy to forget how abysmally useless Robson and Blackwell were at seeing the potential of the best Football League striker this century, or finding a way to harness his fantastic talent.

Imagine if we'd played to his strengths back then. He'd have another 50 odd goals for us.

Quite.

Me and Mrs Grappler met Billy after his hat trick at the lane against Wigan, and what a nice lad he is, interested in you and what you have to say, conducts himself like a model pro.

With Billy, you know he is going to give 100% for Sheffield United every time he plays. Sometimes it doesn't work out and we can't get the ball to him, sometimes he is out on the wing, helping to set up an attacking move, rather than being stood in the box, ready to pounce, but if you give him half a chance, 9 times out of 10, he scores.

A great club Captain, a great lad and 100% Blade, we can't ask for more than that.

THe scandal of being played right fucking wing under Blackwell.

Probably only trumped by Steve Bruce favouring his son Alex over Harry Maguire (yet they still get the credit for developing him ffs).

"Billy son. Just stand on the half way line then when Greggy Halfs hoofs it, leg it into the box, beat the keeper and score..
The rest of you, run around the pitch another ten times then we'll call it a day"

Really got my goat that in the WC last summer, seeing that twat talking about bringing Harry on. Ull bought him but idiot cabbage face spent a year and a half not playing him, preferring his own bloody useless son. I can only hope he continues with this 'great eye for a player' over at S6.

Thanks Revolution for that pre match stat.

Where's Silent Blade when you need him? He should have been all over that stat, but I bet he's on a push bike somewhere checking driving distances to the West Midlands, Lancs and similar.

I'm not sure how Roygbiv's 'view froms' are saved, so I don't know if it's possible for him to filter on Billy comments. There have been loads from other fans how they 'hate the cheating dirt diving git'. I can't think why that might be.

'Billy don't be a hero....' - bollocks to that! He's already a 'ledge' apparently and well on the way to solid gold hero status. Just a little hat trick or so against the S6 massive and that would be the icing on the icing.

I'll have a look mate and try and do a Billy Sharp special

Indeed, I think Marco Silva is extremely overrated, but if it wasn't for him, Maguire would probably be a championship player. Exposed him to the Premier League and pundits tv wide couldn't spaff over him enough.

I've got it for you already

"Fat cunt"
"Hate that fat twat"
"Wish we had him"
"Hard to like him, fat twat"
"Was shite for us"
"Fucking useless here"
"Never had a chance really"
"I'd take him back here"
"Difference between the two side"
"Fat twat always scores against us"

You beat me too it and my thoughts exactly.

Loads of fatist abuse with just a hint of respect and all of them secretly wishing he was theirs.

After lean spells at Reading and DirtyLeeds people are bing reminded every week, just how sharp the lad is.

Maybe two more years at this level and another 40 goals?

Not too greedy is it?

You can think that, I'm not saying you're wrong.

Given the benchmark of Sammon scoring 5 goals, it's hard to imagine finding a worse one isn't it?

No doubt Billy made a big difference but you can't assume we wouldn't have scored any of those goals without him. Even Woolford chipped in with one goal from the wing.

you will struggle to find another captain of any other team in any league who brings so much to their club

His goals, general link up play , attitude , work ethic , how he is such a great example to kids, a great ambassador of the club and his love for the blades is fantastic

A blades fan , playing and scoring goals for the Blades , he must be absolutely loving it ! -
well wouldn't you ?! i know i would !

But Sharp will know that if he goes 6 games without scoring then many Blades will say he’s past it and should be sold, some will even give him personal abuse. He also knows he will be appreciated much more once he’s retired and no longer playing.

Billy’s good, but he’s no Keith Edwards. 171 goals in 293 games, at a time when defenders could tackle in different gravy.

Different times, yes, but Edwards also scored 35 of his United goals in the fourth tier. Their records in the second and third tiers are pretty similar; Sharp's current spell with us on track to be better than anything Edwards produced at this level.

As my West Ham supporting mate puts it - there is no better combination of footballer and club than Billy Sharp playing for the Blades. It was meant to be and I get to mention that a lot given he's on pretty much a goal a game this season.

We would have had no academy either. Which would have meant no Maguire, Jags, Walker etc. And funnily enough no Billy Sharp too. You're barking up the wrong tree having a dig at Warnock (John) in this instance.
So Warnock insisting his family member is involved in Billy Sharps contract results in no Academy?
That is what you are saying?

Nope, that's not what I said. Nice try though. i'll give you 1/10 for cheek. My post was about John Warnock's role in the establishment of the academy, without which there would have been no Billy Sharp nor any fucker else we've sold over the past 20 years who were a product of it.

Not that hard to imagine: Of the other players I listed (Cofie, O'Halloran, Higdon, and Beattie) they managed goal tallies of 2, 0, 3 and 0 respectively.

Even looking at our top scorers between Evans' incarceration and Sharp's arrival makes for grim reading:
12/13 - Blackman and Kitson: 11 each
13/14 - Porter: 7
14/15 - Jamie Murphy: 11

No doubt Billy made a big difference but you can't assume we wouldn't have scored any of those goals without him. Even Woolford chipped in with one goal from the wing.

I never assumed we would go down without him, I suggested that it could have been a realistic scenario.

Looking at the goal tallies above, I'm not sure why you're so confident that wouldn't be the case...

O'Halloran only made 7 appearances. And, to be fair, what you said was "you could realistically presume we could have been relegated without him". I don't think you can presume we wouldn't have had a striker capable of scoring a total similar to Porter and keeping us up somewhat comfortably. If that's not what you meant then fine, thanks for clarifying, but it is what you said.

Run out of words to describe my love for Billy

As a young ‘un I can say with confidence that he’s my all time favourite player

It’s true fairytale stuff at times, Billy is becoming the heroes he looked up to as a kid, how he viewed Shearer, Deano etc is how many of us view him now

All we need now is for him to score a winner against the Pigs for us

In the passage you've quoted from my original post, please see the word "could".

If we had a striker similar to Porter, and he's managed 7 goals, as Porter had during the 13/14 season, then the chances of us going down would be considerable in my opinion.
I certainly doubt your claim that we would have stayed "somewhat comfortably".

18 in 27 league games this year, I think.

King Keith's best for us at this level was 20 in 35 games in 1985-6. Sharp should better that.

You also said "realistically presume". Sorry I found that ambiguous, maybe work on your phrasing in future if this winds you up so much.

It doesn't wind me up at all :) I just don't agree with you, that's all.
