Bert was also behind that goal, he saw it but it took a few seconds for everybody to realise that it was in. Those were indeed the days, we were the best team in the land for a couple of months.

In the Norwich match he should have been credited with two direct from the corner - somebody headed it in from about 6 inches from the goal line when the ball would have gone in anyway.

The Norwich keeper (Kevin Keelan, I think) used to stand well off his line for corners and when Woody swung the first one in he must have thought it was a fluke. When Woody did it again he went mad, claimed he'd been obstructed which was a load of bollocks and got booked when he should have been sent off for punching one of our players - who I believe was John Flynn if the memory cells are working tonight.

I remember on my visit to my Norwich mate's house in the mid 1970s my Norwich mate's dad was recalling about a fierce Woody shot at Carrow Road in August 1970 (we lost to a Albert Bennett goal) that bounced violently off Keelan's chest which had the crowd in stitches but my Norwich mate couldnt remember the incident (he was only 8 at the time). Some years later when I was reading match reports from the Green Un archives in the Sheffield central Library, Peter Howard wrote about the incident of Woody's shot that bounced off Keelan's chest said "Keelan was so shaken after that and needed a lengthy treatment from the sponge man". Also in the archives there was a photo of a Morning Telegraph photographer (in 1967, I think) who had his nose broken and bloodied when a Woody shot hit his face. The accident happened when the photographer was taking photos of a training session at the Ball Inn ground

That happened to a bloke halfway up Myrtle Road when Duggie Brown was playing.

>tear in eyes
me an'all .. sob
here's an old joke to cheer you up..
'why do sheffield united always play with ten players?'
'cos one is a dearden'.. :-)

Around 1980 I once got a free football courtsey of SUFC. There I was walking along the path along Myrtle Road just below the Ball Inn ground on my way home (I lived on Erskine Crescent then). An SUFC training session was in progress and a ball came over the fence and landed at my feet. I picked it up and carried on my way.

I don't know if Duggie was responsible.

Billy was a top player lets hope he can find a few gems as good as he was. I think it was around £30,000 John Harris brought him from Chester for. One of the best bargains United ever did.

We could do with someone at BDTBL reight now that could spot players like John Harris and his team. !

Quite a few of the players Jihn Harris brought in were from the Reserves and intermediate sides. Badger, Salmons, Woody, Jones, Mallinder, Bernard Shaw etc. Have to agree though Dearden, Currie, Colqoune (Can never spell big Eddies name) ;) Helmsley were all good buys. Lets not forget myself ;)

It was Rowley that signed Colquhoun and Hemsley. He also signed Tudor, Powell, Flynn and Crawford

Remember competition in early seventies who could hit the ball the hardest, Peter lorimer (Leeds) won, woody 2nd.

Dearden has joined us according to the local rag here.

Indeed...
Another new signing - and Philliskirk has now apparently officially joined on a free from Chelsea. We're going crazy with all this transfer activity!

BLACKPOOL’S chief scout Billy Dearden has joined Sheffield United.

Dearden, who scored 61 goals in 175 league appearances for the Blades in the 1970s, was approached by new boss Danny Wilson about joining the backroom staff.

Dearden was not under contract at Blackpool and was free to go.

Wilson, who took charge at relegated United three weeks ago, said: “The job Billy’s done at Blackpool has been excellent. I think it’s fair to say he’s helped to bring in some exceptional players for them. He is a top-quality individual.”

Dearden, 67, was the Seasiders’ chief scout for the last three years. He also worked as a coach at Bloomfield Road during Colin Hendry’s time in charge.
