Bettis Interview

A good interview - comes across far better via the written word than via video.

What he said makes sense and is reassuring there's no plan to throw away the good things the club already have and there's a desire and ambition to further build on them,

With a few tweaks to the squad and a bit of luck, they won't be far away next season.

Its a very good interview. And I think there is a real need to stop all the references back to McCabe. He's from another era but he did put Wilder. He did well.

If you take the time to look at the WBA forum... they just don't know who their new manager is going to be. They are now reappraising Wilder, who before they didn't want. There is also the suggestion that the Fulham boss (whoever he is ) wants to go to Bournmouth. We should consider ourselves very lucky to have been virtually relegated before Christmas and having six months to think/plan a way forward/back to the "promised land".

Meanwhile...

Not to mention a few of them have already identified it as a possible site for their new ground, despite having zero money

laces,
our friends over there in S6 are also talking/suggesting about moving into the new/proposed stadium for Sheffield FC as their new venue (capacity 4,000, which very fortunately is just enough to accommodate their famous 3,000 away fans). https://www.thestadiumbusiness.com/2021/03/02/sheffield-fc-unveils-plans-for-new-4000-seat-stadium/

Will Sheffield FC want them? Somehow I don't think so...

Returning to United... I feel optimistic. I think we are doing very well, especially given the appointment of Slav.

West Brom's relegation was nearly obvious at Christmas (7 points from 14 games!) as ours but they decided to waste £15m on Big Sam and his mercenaries. Their owner also wants out so they can't (or won't) plan as effectively as we are.

Bettis comes across really well in this but the proof of the pudding is in the eating: the true test is what sort of squad we have come August.

Just happy the system isn't being discarded, I think sometimes, managers tend to overthink, or perhaps tinker in search of perfection, in the belief that adapting the style or formation is the only way to progress, there is enough proof from great managers its more important to buy the right players, Shanklin, Clough, Ferguson etc
Wolves had a poor season after moving on from what made them so successful, same can be said of Liverpool, yes they had injuries but buying Thiago altered their dynamic.

Good PR fluff to keep us fans warm for a few more weeks.

As Balham Blade says, the real proof of progress/evolution will be what squad we go into the season with and obviously where we are at Christmas...

All the nice reassuring words will mean nowt if we are competitive next season.

I'm ridiculously positive as it seems we have some grown ups running the club which makes a refreshing change after a decade or so of having a hierarchy full of people with no emotional intelligence...

Having Athleticism and someone effective in the Duffy role is key to 5-3-2 working. There is more chance of it working in the Championship against shit midfields than in the Prem..

Need two or three High quality midfield signings this summer though.
Totally agree.Athleticism and midfielders should be the two main words this coming window.

Hugely short on both.

A bit of PR fluff yes but good to know we are not throwing the baby out with the bathwater and sticking to what has been setup already.

Also, good to know the club are still pressing ahead to get us to a Cat 1 level for our academy.

Reads well.
I remember at the time Bettis got alot of stick from fans who were big Wilder supporters.
I certainly like to look at Wilder with fond memories over dismissing his legacy but regards Bettis these two actually got on pretty well I believe.

Yeah well the truth can be hard for them. With the transport links that site has it could really be a jewel in the crown for the club.

I drive past the site everyday to visit my girlfriend. If the filthy scrubbers somehow built their next trough there, she'd either have to move or I'd dump her.

“We don't want any of our players to leave, simple as that. We just want to strengthen”.

Just gonna leave that there for when we sell Berge.

There's more chance of getting bitten by a lettuce than Sheffield Council doing anything that would be to our benefit.

UTB & FTP
Not controlled by Labour now, it’s a joint Labour-Green administration. Should be an improvement, certainly on the days when it was run by a cabal of Wednesdayites.

There is a lot more common sense in this article/interview than the 'blow it up and start again" posters on here.

I think we should all see these times has exciting times!
I like the idea the club is going for a certain philosophy with the 5-3-2 formation with the overlapping centre-backs. Especially if it is going to be taught throughout the club with the youth players, it makes sense and its gripping to think we should always have a youth option that could be called upon in each area, that will know the formation and what is expected from them.
I wouldn't even mind even watching the females if they play that way, from what we have seen under Wilder when the formation is played well it is a joy to watch.

Played with a CAM midfielder it is lovely to watch. It means we are not over reliant on the wing backs creating chances.

I don’t know much about Jokanovic, but he has a great reputation. My only slight worry from this interview is the transfers part. Slav doesn’t usually have any say in this, nor would he mind if he wasn’t involved? I’m a bit lost by that, but maybe this is the new way of working??

Maybe similar to 1997-98 season when Charles Green had more power in buying and selling players?

Realistically it has to be the new way of working, why rely on one man's contacts or limit yourself to how many players one man can be aware of, if the manager spends too long doing one aspect of his job, then the other parts are affected, if he tells the recruitment team he wants someone like ,,,,,,, they can do the spade work and offer a shortlist, he can then decide if they fit his request, knowing the groundwork has been done, they are in budget, available etc saves time and hopefully gets results,,similar to any firm using a recruitment agency to fill a vacancy

Fair play to Flatulent_Bob who called this
I just sprinkle slightly different formations in different posts so I can go back to them to prove I’m right. There’s one claiming 4-4-2, growing the grass long in the corners which we hit as quickly as possible for wingers to run onto and two massive fuckers in the middle.
