if you had to say in your lifetime which TWO players had been the best game AFTER game after game and made a long lasting impression I would have to say

1. TONY CURRIE

2 George Best

Which two do you think?

I always rated.......wait for it.......Glenn Cockerill.

Always played well for us...great work rate.....great attitude and a fair amount of ability too.
You could see straight away he was destined for a career in the top flight.

Glenn seems to have this fetish with “red and white stripes”.
Started at Lincoln City, then us, then Southampton, played at one or two other clubs before ending his career at Brentford. I had a friend who was a Lincoln City fan and he told me that when we bought him that Cockerill would be a big success.

Regards the question the best I’ve seen is Diego Maradona.
He ruled the World Cup tournament much more than Ronaldo or Messi ever have.
Maradona was more of an individualist and opposition defenders couldn’t get near him, he was on a totally different level.

In recent years then surely Ronaldo and Messi are unsurpassed, consistently great.

The stumpy cheat and Lineker. Not by any means the most skilful, that has to be Gazza (English) but he got England out of the shit so many times, in the days when I cared about the national team. The Argentinian was the most influential player I've seen although Ronaldo probably comes close but players don't really make an impact on me in the way they did when I was younger. I like watching them, players like Messi, Henry, Bergkamp, De Bruyne, and the many that have played over the last twenty or so years but that's it, I only really get excited by the Blades these days.

There are some good players around these days and some good teams and I wish I was younger as I'd probably appreciate them more. I just find that when you're young you get into things more as it all seems new and exciting.

here goes for english players;

defender bobby moore

centre forward frank worthington

George Best

Bobby Charlton

Jimmy Greaves.

Gerd Muller & Ferenc Puskas

OP states in your lifetime. I'm 34 so my answer is still valid (for me). ;)

Plus - the trajectory of both their goals/games ratios, particularly Messi will be better than the others. We're talking about athletes who could be judged on games/goals ratios at present, they're that good, they've flipped the chart (Messi in his career and Ronaldo at real madrid)

Just to throw up two random ones.

Henry and Van Nistelrooy seem to destroy the prem for a good 5 years between them.

In terms of permanently generally influencing the way that games go for 90 minutes Kante is alone, and his fitness level puts him ahead of players from the past. Never in the spotlight, but winning and providing for those who are. Trevor Hockey with speed, skill and fitness!

In the past Der Kaiser sat behind, was always available to collect and sweep forwards and was almost error free - similarly Sir Bobby Moore.

In terms of influencing the result of every game they play, there has never been anybody to touch Messi and Ronaldo. Speed, skill, endurance and clinical finishing in combinations unmatched in history.

Of course, how players from the past would have been with today’s equipment, pitches, sports science and referee protection can never be known.

Best, Souness.

That's an interesting choice Sean. His spell at Liverpool allowed GS to demonstrate that he could control a midfield game after game after......a lot of people at the time preferred Dalglish, but I too plumped for Souness, with that grizzled thoroughbred Lawrenson (to my mind the better of the pairing with Hansen) up there too.

I like the idea of value for money, so Pele, Maradonna, Cruyff (I know, more than two but can't help it), Maldini, Zidane, Socrates, Best, and forgive this selection but as a player he was exceptional, Platini.

Yes, Thierry Henry often goes under the radar when people talk about the best ever but he was a truly wonderful player and certainly in my top six.

Based on sheer entertainment value, Ronaldinho and Messi.

Ronaldinho for me too, his skill set was on another level. Shame he didn't have the brainpower to realise it and his time at the top was sadly too short, a Brazilian Gazza if you like. I'd have to go for Pele over Messi though.

Pele at his peak was just a bit before my time, as were the likes of Best and our dear own TC. I wish I had seen them all at their best.

I'm a goalies man so Buffon and Shilton for me.

I like the look of Ederson, developing into a good keeper.

There's so many isn't there. In addition to those two there's Yashin, Zoff, Banks and a load more. I think it would be more difficult naming the top two GK's than the outfield players.

I think so too.

The interesting thing for me though these days, more is expected of a keeper. I couldn't have been a sweeper keeper if I'd tried. I used to get nosebleeds if I passed the penalty spot!
