Been to burton today and this would be my starting eleven without Maguire and obviously that illusive striker. HowardGk AlcockRB McgaheyCB ButlerCB HarrisLB FlynnRM BashamCDM ScougalCM WallaceCM MurphyLM BaxterCF same formation as end of last season this our strongest side atm imo and would finish top 6 if we get that goal scorer we could really challenge for top

Howard
Alcock Maguire Butler Harris
Flynn Scougall Basham Murphy
Baxter
McNulty

That's my current thoughts but having not seen all the players who knows. Wallace could come in, even Diego.

Diego was the only bright spark out of today's farce. I don't think he's far away.

From today I thought only Campbell-Ryce, Alcock and Diego deserved applauds. They seemed to be the only ones giving it a go! Baxter looked good on the ball and Reed looked good in spells but it really wasn't good enough today I'm afraid. Hopefully nothing like today will appear again this season.

Yes but he's still got that fancy name what people keep bringing up,so he can't start:rolleyes:idiots. What a cracking talent he is and by far our brightest prospect,no two ways about it.

Thought Alcock and Crawford looked promising myself.

Diego was quiet by his standards.

Disagree think Crawford looked poor and don't really now why we have him on trial seen as we have about 8 centre mids diego looks promising just hope clough plays him this season if not send him out on loan with a recall clause

Crawford played on the wing?

He played the number 10 role for Ayr he certainty didn't look comfortable playing as a winger I'd be very surprised if clough signs him on today's performance

Thought he did as much as Campbell-Ryce today personally.

He's likely to base any potential signing on a little more than 45 minutes at 3-0 down in the first friendly.

Having seen very little of him, and no doubt less than you, I can only speak as I see. And it wasn't based on his fancy name:) the lad's clearly got class playing in a position where we're otherwise devoid of even the lower league basics. We are desperate up top at the moment.

I did think Alcock did well. The rest was the usual pre season nothingness, wrapped up in a depressing thrashing by a 4th division club.

Aside from the obvious striker issue I think the squad is currently seriously lacking in pace. When Murphy didn't play last year we were devoid of it, and however you play or however good your side are you're always going to struggle without it. Campbell-Ryce may still have a turn, but he won't be as quick as he once was. After that our only players who might be thought of as quick are Khan (unlikely to feature a lot) or a recalled McFadzean. Ideal (and very optimistic) world we sign two strikers one of whom is quick, the other a stronger, more O-Grady like player. Failing that one quick striker will do for me, we showed last year a big man isn't a necessity.

Howard

Alcock Collins Butler Harris

Doyle Wallace

JCR Scougall Murphy

Baxter.

I haven't seen enough of Basham and McGahey to put them in my team yet but they could well be starters from what I've heard of them.

I don't know about the other new signings, but JCR will still be pacey I'm sure. Scougall is very quick. We're still lacking though, I agree, and hopefully any striker we sign will have plenty of it. But time is running out and our options diminishing.

Too early to judge the new lads, only going on the brief showing at Burton & what I've seen of Wallace at Tranmere I'd go with -

Howard
Alcock Maguire Collins Harris
Doyle Wallace
JCR Scougall Murphy
Baxter

Diego impressed me yesterday & still got Flynn to come back into the fold.

Wish people would stop panicking about the forward situation, yes it wasn't good yesterday agreed but it was first game of pre-season, there's still time to get that forward in and we've got a lad called Marc McNulty that everyones forgot about to come in.

No need to panic

In Clough we trust.

I think its likely to be:
Howard
Alcock Maguire Butler Harris
Basham Wallace
Flynn Scougall Murphy
Baxter

With Willis, McGahey, Porter, DeGiralmo, McNulty, JCR, & Davies.

Assuming that Harry stays, of course ....
Regrettably, that team doesn't have many goals in it unless McNulty really comes good !!!
Prolific striker needed urgently ......

Will be interesting to see where McGahey fits in, as a few have said he hasn't come to us from the Championship to sit on the bench. I think he will have a big role this season, with Maguire likely to leave I am a little bit worried we will have a completely new back four who have no experience playing together, a midfield pairing who haven't played together also.

Plenty of time from now to August 9th for them partnerships to start though.

obviously, ive not seen much (if anything) of the new lads but assuming harry goes, id like to see
howard
alcock mcgahey Collins harris
mcginn Wallace
Flynn scougall murphy
mcnulty

subs JCR, basham, butler, davies/new signing, doyle/new signing, baxter, long

Football is all about opinions, and I haven't seen many of our new midfielders play... But every time I see DOYLE on these kind of picks it makes me die a little inside

I think Clough will play as many of the Wembley line-up as possible and the newcomers will have to take their chances and work their way into the side. Without more strikers it seems likely we are sticking with the 4-5-1.

Exceptions may be Basham for Doyle, Butler for Collins, Alcock or Davies at right back where there's a vacancy. He might play Doyle and Basham, much depends on Alcock's overlapping ability with Harris OK on the overlap. Davies could get the Coady role, maybe Wallace.

Reed deserves to get loads of playing time off the bench as does DiMawhatever. No more midfielders please, it's important these lads are involved ; same with Diego, essential in his case particularly.

As for the new striker it has to be Billy Sharp surely?- no pace though it's not essential in 4-5-1 the way we played it last season. Hurry up and sign a new striker Southampton and then we'll know.

Howard
Alcock, Maguire, Butler, Harriss
Flynn, Basham, Scougall, Murphy
Baxter, McNulty

Perhaps McGahey for Butler for a bit more mobility at centre half. And I've not seen McNulty but would hope he is good enough to be starting as at the moment without another striking option it's Porter.
