Bassett first although I believe Gary Speed could well have been up there with the best, a sad loss.

I don’t agree with that. I did feel sorry for Speed at the time as he inherited a team that had been slashed to the bone by financial constraints and a squad of players signed by Kevin Blackwell. I can remember some awful performances as well and wasn’t that disappointed when he left for the Wales job. He was an absolute Rolls Royce of a footballer and the best veteran we ever had and we’ve had a few.

It’s desperately sad what happened after he left, and it was a horrific day that affected so many people deeply when he passed away in so many different ways.

Im not sure why Hecky isn’t featuring more, but especially when names like Kendall and Spackman are getting mentioned.

We vastly underperformed in Kendall’s full season with us and ended up losing in the play offs with a squad with enough about them to be comfortably top two standard.

Spackman inherited a decent side but took off as soon as the going got tough.

Hecky inherited a team that was languishing in the bottom half of the league under that clown Jokanovic and took us to a penalty shoot out away from a play off final. And the following season went one better and took us with game to spare, despite fighting against boardroom shenanigans and doing it with an ageing squad coming towards the end of the careers.

Don't think Heckeh was exciting enough really, I remember the game we won promotion v West Brom, the feeling was quite flat really, agree he did well after the failed Slav project which was mainly on Prince for lying to him.

Will say one thing Heckeh has/had over Wilder, he conducts himself far better.

I think it was all a bit flat because of what was happening around the club at that time. I don’t think most people was under illusions the club didn’t have a pot to piss in, and it was glaringly obvious the club was going to bank the money and not strengthen was on a hiding to nothing the next season.

If we hadn’t got promoted that year we would have been even more fucked the season after

It depends what you mean by success.

Arguably Clough getting us to a League Cup semi-final and FA Cup semi-final in League One was successful, and impressive.

On paper Danny Wilson has a better win% than most other United managers, but for some reason no one wants to talk about him. But he was a successful manager to that effect and in his first season we kept a lot of clean sheets, went on an amazing undefeated run and scored a ridiculous number of goals playing great attacking football.

Bassett for me. He did that he did with a lot less money, relatively speaking, than Warnock and Wilder.

Why is Hecky not getting many honorable mentions?

1. Bassett (2 promotions, 4 PL seasons)
2. Wilder (2 promotions, 2 PL seasons)
3. Warnock (1 promotion, 1 PO Loss, 1PL season)
4. Heckingbottom (1 promotion, 1 PO Loss, 1PL)

We did have a few decent cup exploits in Warnock’s time in the ‘triple assault’ season but then again, Hecky got us to the FA Cup semi in a shorter period.

Hecky be looked on quite fondly I reckon. Victim of his boss having not enough money. He did a very good administrative job. He didn’t build a team from scratch but he steadied the ship, made modest financial moves and put up with a fair bit of off-field challenges all with great dignity. Shame the only roll of the dice his Boss had was to change manager. Arguably that had limited impact. In a parallel universe it would be interesting to see how we would have got on if he stayed all season and been in charge now. Building a squad from scratch is something we’d not seen from him.

Porterfield had decent success but it was from a far lower base.
