Who are the most successful managers at the Lane in the last 50 years ?

1975 to now?

Porterfield
Bassett
Warkock
Wilder have all been "successful" in our terms.

Bassett tops the lot for me, took us to the top flight and kept us there against all odds for 4 seasons, we weren't relegated in an embarrassing way despite those above him hampering him

Wilder 2nd for his first stint and keeping us up for 1 season, the next few weeks could decide how he's ultimately judged.

Warnock he did get us playing again and up, but sadly was never a top flight manager

Porterfield lifted us off our arses in dire times

1, John Harris. legendary early seventies team Currie/Woodward etc.
2 Dave Bassett.Deane Agana.
3 Chris Wilder. His first spell at the club-dog and duck league, to ninth in the Premier League.

Took Warnock 6 and half seasons to get us in the PL. Took Wilder 3 years.
It might have but he did give me the best season supporting the Blades in the triple assault season.
Also I down graded Wilder for walking out when the going got tough.

Hard to separate Bassett/Warnock/Wilder. I'm 43 so football just meant more when I was younger so I'd probably go Bassett first.

Huge drop off to Hecky and Kendall. Then Wilson. Begrudgingly Blackwell.

After that, in the bin

1st Wilder

2nd Harris

3rd Bassett

4th Warnock

Harris is my best manager but he was no longer our manager more than 50 years ago. This thread is about the last 50 years, no more.

I’ve been watching United for 50 years.

1st Bassett and Wilder
It’s a tricky choice because they were both the right person at the right time and both totally transformed the culture of the club.

Bassett was a Londoner but was he got the club and had such a northern/ Sheffield attitude regards passion and honesty. Regards Wilder taking a club from bottom of league 1 to 6th in the Premier league is modern day miracle.

3rd Warnock

4th Very special mentions to Kendall and even Spackman. Bassett was great but it was mainly percentage long ball, gerrit int box football. I remember when Kendall took over and almost instantly we played a Swansea style of keep possession, pass and move football. Quite incredible to see how a style can change so quickly. Kendall was so good that Everton wanted him back, so we were left with Spackman who continued playing an entertaining high novelty short passing style.

Oops, thanks for pointing out my mistake, Silent Blade, I had a senior moment, my excuse is I am well over 50 and I should have got my brain in gear.
1. Dave Bassett.
2 Chris Wilder.
3.Neil Warnock.

I think Hecky deserves a mention, he had us promoted with games to spare. It all ended badly of course, once we were in the prem, but to get promoted to the world's best league is some achievement.

Probably Bassett Wilder and Warnock...which is amazing to think that Warnock got us just 1 promotion and 1 relegation after signing just about every player in our wage bracket during his time here.

As many of us older supporters remember, we had some very good teams on a shoestring budget under John Harris including 5th in division 1 in 1961/62 and had a few periods when we were top of the league for a while including 1971/72 when following promotion we beat the 3 previous league champions in our first 10 games winning 8 and drawing 2. At that time our first 11 was in my honest opinion the best in the league but unfortunately our 1st team squad was only made up of 13 or 14 players so we fell away as injuries took their toll.
But of course that's more that's over 50 years ago so since then for me Dave Bassett is the best. He ended our long spell out of the top division playing exciting football and gave us the feeling that the players out there were an extension of us, the fans .
Wilder did the same in his first spell and I will always be grateful for that and Warnock also turned us round, gave us the great season in 2002/3 and automatic promotion in 2005/6.
For me it's Dave Bassett not only a great manager but a top bloke off the field as well.

Porterfield, IIRC, got us to a higher placed finish in each season, so objectively you could say he has a decent shout. Basset worked wonders with no cash, so did Wilder, and Warnock really put us above the Pigs in the eyes of most people outside the city.

Bassett for me by miles.

I started supporting the Blades in the mid-80s, and didn't just love him as a manager but his character and personality was so bubbly and infectious.

I also thought Spackman had the makings of a great manager, so it always puzzles me why he didn't go on to really have any level of managerial career.

He give me the most exciting season being a Blades fan in the triple assault season, never have i come out of a United game buzzing as many times as I did that season.
Also he never left via the backdoor when the going got tough.

Was a good season, we won fuck all though and Warnock gave promotion up cos of the cup
