Best atmosphere while watching United...

I think one of my favourites, and one that sticks out above what anyone else has said was Everton away, the Premiership season.

There were just chorus's and chorus's (and I dont say that often about United songs, but that day we really were like a choir!) of loads of songs, and I remember a "Sheff United" going for at least 15 minutes none stop!

But you cant beat the Nottingham Forest game. I get goosepimply even thinking about it, what a night that was :)

I totally agree with you. The Everton game (stood under the stand feeling pretty claustrophobic) was constant signing, and the Forest game was electric.

It was 5-1 and my first ever game (what a start! Its all been downhill from there)

Best atmosphere. Darlington, Div 4, 1981. 21,000 in the ground, 19,500 Blades. All the way there, all the way back, fancy dress, lads up the floodlights, Flintstones pitch invasion, what a day! We've had some tense nights since then, Arsenal in the PL being very special, but for that over-riding feeling of sheer success its Darlo for me...

Mind you Leicester was pretty good, especially hearing that the pigs had gone down...

Lol, the crowd has almost doubled with the passing of nearly 30 years. It was a bit over 11,000 - and around 9000 were United fans. Oh and it was in 1982 :-)

For me it was the West Ham game we won 3-0 at home. All us Blades thought that was us safe after that game...

Ahhhhh memories! The one day that Carloz Tevez decided not to turn up, he was crap! And Tongueys celebration....I was on cloud 9 that night, really thought we'd done it then.

March 1970 (or 71?).

A night match at home to Cardiff, who were our main rivals for promotion to the old first division.

Won 4-1 (or maybe 5-1). Best night of footballing life.

Was there too - my second season. I worked in Somerset for a while and met more than one Cardiff fan who still hates us for that night :)

For me the best was Liverpool at home in the first semi of the Carling Cup in the triple assault season - though I enjoyed the (second) Boxing Day game at Highfield Road - "Shit Ground .... No roof" as the rain came horizontally at us! - and Sheffield United, Sheffield United for about half and hour none stop. Their fans were blown away by us.

Always like trips to Carrow Road for some reason too

Crystal Palace last day of last season.

SO many blades packing out London pre-match. I swear it's the little things that count... Round one pub it was so packed with blades that this Sainsbury's van couldn't get through....cue on onslaught of "MORRISONS MORRISONS MORRISONS".....Was piss funny...

this was all ofcourse helped by the fact that we'd bought ouur beer from a beer off 50yards down from said pub and were absolutely shit faced on a tenner!

Ipswich away play off final 1997. What a night!

Made the ridiculous trip down to Portman Road on the tuesday night and was duly rewarded with my best experience of watching Sheffield United.

There were only about 2000 United fans (I think) who made it down. Everybody had wrote us off after the sheep shaggers had come to the Lane and dranw 1-1. Peter Katchouro (remember him? ;-) ) put us one up early on. They equalised at some point and eventually the game went to extra time.

For the whole game the United fans were brilliant. We completely and uttelry drowned out the home support. Chants of 'Howard Kendalls Red and White Army .... S U F C' went on the whole game.

(My memory is a little vague so forgive me if my turn of events is not exact). In extra time Ipswich went 2-1 up. Then some pillock called Nick Henry got sent off for Utd for stamping on an Italian pillock who played for Ipswich. Andy Walker scored for the Blades and I went mental, knowing we would go through on away goals, only to see it ruled out 10 seconds later.

With the clock ticking that little Scottish diamond Andy Walker popped up at the back stick and put the ball in the net. I remember waiting for a full 2 or 3 seconds, looking at the linesman, looking at the ref, then when I was sure the goal stood I went beserk! The mighty Blades held on and off to Wembely we went. To be honest we scraped through, despite being dominated by a better Ipswich side!?

What a night! The hairs on the back of my neck are staning up writing this! :-)
Agree fully with that one, never had a goal celebration like Andy Walker's scrambled effort. Blades fans sung themselves hoarse all match.

I think I'd add some nights in the 2002/03 season as well, some amazing atmospheres that season.

Leeds at home in both cups, Liverpool home and away, Pigs 3-1 with Browny's screamer plus of course the Forest match.

*edit, another good one was the pigs at home in 1992 drew 1-1, was the first time I saw a nautical flare at a United game after Littlejohn scored and I remember the red smole drifting over the kop and thinking how amazing it looked.

all of em from the early 70's ............
a neight match at BDTBL then was sumat else ......memories

I'd agree on that....as a young lad with all the fans around you singing.

The day the took the roof off it all went.

Never felt the same since!

grimsby away,(was it 79-80 season?) awful game lost 4-0 i think, but the blades support was fantastic, and impressed reg brearley enough to buy into united.
i was also at the southampton game, coldest ive ever been at a game!

QPR away 1991 when Bob Booker headed the winner late on. It confirmed we were staying up in the top flight after having 4 points the week before Christmas. I remember the atmosphere outside The Springbok before the game topped off by the team bus going past. I didn't see it but I was told that at the final whistle Vinnie Jones gave a fist-clenched Yeeessss! right in Ray Wilkins face.
Everton away was good too that season when we swamped the ground with yellow balloons. Also the "European cup win" against Forest at home 3-2.

Beating Leeds in the League Cup in Sept. 1970.

They were as good as anything in the country (although rightly despised by everyone) and we were just embarking on the best ever season. TC saw them off with a shot from the edge of the area and I went from about 3 steps from the back of the kop to near where it split in two. First time I'd been right at the back of the kop for a "cup shock" and it was an awesome noise.

I think this was Sept 8th. If so, that was the day I was born.

Darlington away, Leicester away, the 1991/2 double over Day Before Thursday (both matches), Leeds in the League Cup via Jags and Nuddy, away at Tranmere when we scraped into the play offs in '97 with a late draw.

Singing our hearts out when we got to Selhurst Park at half time to find we were losing 3-0 to Wimbledon, doing the same when turning up late at Colchester in Division Four, oddly losing 3-0 as we went in.

Finally beating Notts County after Wayne Quinn (what a quality pisshead) got sent off for kicking a ball agaianst a hoarding in a Cup match 4-3 when 3-1 down with a few minutes to go .....

My vote has to go to beating Forest 4-3 in the play-off semi final, for so many different reasons.

I still don't believe we escaped relegation that year. If I remember correctly, had the league started on Jan 1 1991, we'd have been second on goal difference from Arsenal, or was it from our first win?

At the start of that season, I was still at school in London. Thankfully, our main sport was rugby union, and I was in the first XV. Few questions were asked.

Those who didn't go to matches, but took the piss, shut up. Not the same as when I was 6 in 1981 :(

Day you was born, and my 21st birthday.

Oh, what a night, we had, especially as I'd just finished at Bradford University and a number of my mates, were Leeds fans.

I was drunk for days after!

forest at home i always remember but by far the best one i think iv ever been involved in was Everton away in our season in the premier, from the beginning of the second half, our part of the stand was bouncing. Some group start the "o when then blades go marching in" song and it must have gone on for 20 minutes straight and its the loudest iv ever heard it, the main everton stand didnt no what was going on we was loosing at the time but united just made it a carnival atmosphere and i thought it was brilliant.

My brain has a mind of its own. It doesn't need you to spoil it all by pointing out facts.

I dont care about what really happened, just let me enjoy what I think I remember...

For me it has to be the 3-2 victory against Sunderland in 1978 when i stood on the Kop for the first time with my mates. We got into the ground early and there were hundreds or more Sunderland fans already in singing and chanting. The Kop was nearly empty but as time wore on it got more and more packed and the rival chants went back and forth. By kick off time there was chanting and surges and the rear of the Kop was packed out. A good game too. I remember hearing the 'Harry Haslam, Danny Begara...' song for the first time. And 'take my hand...' was another popular one back then sung with real passion and the 'We all hate Leeds and Leeds and Leeds...'

Second it has to be Darlo away. It was a carnival day out from start to finish. Our 'coach' was a requisitioned SYPTE single decker bus that rattled and bumped it's way up to Darlo and back.

Post 2000 it's Forest play off at home followed by Pigs 3-1 victory at home.

Some other notable ones: Peterboro away in Div 4 night match and Leeds away when Edwards scored a header for us at their end in a 1-1 draw. And the Man U and Blackburn cup ties at the Lane in 93 i think.

I was at that match as well, stood behind the goal. I seem to remember a Jeff King goal for some reason.

Mind you, all the away games that season were pretty memorable. I think we were the highest attendance for every team in the division that season, in fact our average home one of 15,000+ is still the record for the bottom division. Halifax sticks out, if only for a wall collapsing onto me after Tony Kenworthy scored the equalising penalty.

Stoke away, Danny Webbers late equaliser, 4500 Blades. Awesome day and cracking atmosphere. Passing out at one point.

Still Charlton away Prem season really sticks out in my mind :D

There were some great ones in our Premier League season. Everton sticks out the most i think.

Never seen or heard any better than the night games in the 70s. One in particular was the debut of T.C. against a Spurs side with 11 internationals playing for em'. I think the score was 4-1 or 4-2. Brilliant game and best atmosphere I've ever experienced. I can see it now when Len Badger had a fantastic shot from outside the area tipped over by Pat Jennings at the kop end.

Thought it was 3 - 1 or 3 - 0 but stand to be corrected. Agree that the atmosphere in the 70's was the dogs though, and the night matches were awesome :bomb:

A totally different game to the one we currently watch. The football was a lot slower, but far more entertaining as most teams had at least one showman who could play a bit and usually do something memorable. Unlike the instantly forgetable huff and puff, big boot stuff we're treated to today. With the product being so bland, and the intoduction of all seater stadia it really hasn't enhanced the game at all for an old fogey like me. It's more a Sky produced and financed package these days, a bit sneaky like WWE, where we all know who's going to win because everything's geared up to keeping the successful clubs successful. It really does show as the quality's woefully poor, but the sales and marketing make it seem like something too marvelous to live without :kissass:

Ipswich away 70's when we won was a cracking day out. Had a few lairy days in Hull over the years, and Leeds home and away was always a barrel of laughs. Too many to mention over the years, but apart from the Forest play off second leg, most games over the last ten years have been as dull as dull can be.

:gallop:

The first away win in our retrun to the PL you mean bb? If so, then yes that was a good night, and for that second half the atmosphere was cracking, the "oh when the blades" seemed to last forever and the fans on our coaches were getting clapped at by some of the (not protesting) geordies after the game - as if to say, "fair play to you"...

really weird watching a match that high up, you expect to be almost cut off from the game itself, but the Blades fans did themselves proud that night and Warnock even made a point of mentioning it on his Sky interview afterwards for the fans "up in the clouds/gods"...

UTB!

That night was incredible. I was too late for all those brilliant promotion days out at Darlo and Leicester aswell as that Derby Double v the pigs.

Being so high up on bonfire night you could see all of Gateshead being lit up with fireworks. Those 20 minute of Oh When the Blades was only stopped by Webbers header.

2,000 Blades outsinging 46,000 Geordies.

Just imagine how the players felt, knowing the fans where a mile away yet they could still here us going on and on and on.
