The Ultras thread got me thinking, when have the Blades fans been best for you?

I reckon Southampton away, just after Christmas in 2005. It was bloody cold... so cold that it'd actually snowed in central London a couple of days before. Regardless, United had travelled in good numbers to say it was a night match on the south coast and the game had that "under floodlights" air about it.

It wasn't a classic match by any means, but the vocal support from the Blades was relentless. We were sat at the front by the Southampton fans and you could hear the roar from behind us. Cold hands were made sore from clapping and throats were soon raw with "sheffield united, sheffield united, sheffield united" shouted over and over again.

There weren't any moans from United fans when a ball went astray or audible sighs when things didn't quite work. Just a constant chanting over and over again and true enough, Shipperley popped up just before the hour mark and scored the only goal of the game before coming over the celebrate with the travelling fans.

I don't think it's the loudest we've been but I think it's a time I can point to where the fans really made a difference.

I was there and whilst it was good in a kind of way it couldn't beat the night when we went down the road and Dane Whitehouse and Bobby Davidson put the pigs to the sword What a night! I had travelled 220 miles to be at the game and just got into Leppings Lane when DW scored the opener Fantastic

all of em from the early 70's ............
a neight match at BDTBL then was sumat else ......memories

and all of the away games during that season (1981-82)

York was a particulary good one that season - a mike trusson Double in a 4-2 win ( stands to be coreected)

All the other classics were about the occasion , darlington , Leicester , Bobbys double et al .

Of all of them Forest is probably the best home -

Too Many aways - Rotherham 1-0 springs to mind. Bob Atkins goal at the railway end .

Forest at home 2003 play-off semi.

The air above the Lane actually crackled with the noise, first time I've ever heard that.

Ipswich away play off final 1997. What a night!

Made the ridiculous trip down to Portman Road on the tuesday night and was duly rewarded with my best experience of watching Sheffield United.

There were only about 2000 United fans (I think) who made it down. Everybody had wrote us off after the sheep shaggers had come to the Lane and dranw 1-1. Peter Katchouro (remember him? ;-) ) put us one up early on. They equalised at some point and eventually the game went to extra time.

For the whole game the United fans were brilliant. We completely and uttelry drowned out the home support. Chants of 'Howard Kendalls Red and White Army .... S U F C' went on the whole game.

(My memory is a little vague so forgive me if my turn of events is not exact). In extra time Ipswich went 2-1 up. Then some pillock called Nick Henry got sent off for Utd for stamping on an Italian pillock who played for Ipswich. Andy Walker scored for the Blades and I went mental, knowing we would go through on away goals, only to see it ruled out 10 seconds later.

With the clock ticking that little Scottish diamond Andy Walker popped up at the back stick and put the ball in the net. I remember waiting for a full 2 or 3 seconds, looking at the linesman, looking at the ref, then when I was sure the goal stood I went beserk! The mighty Blades held on and off to Wembely we went. To be honest we scraped through, despite being dominated by a better Ipswich side!?

What a night! The hairs on the back of my neck are staning up writing this! :-)

Beating Leeds in the League Cup in Sept. 1970.

They were as good as anything in the country (although rightly despised by everyone) and we were just embarking on the best ever season. TC saw them off with a shot from the edge of the area and I went from about 3 steps from the back of the kop to near where it split in two. First time I'd been right at the back of the kop for a "cup shock" and it was an awesome noise.

Don't know about the best atmosphere but defiantly the coldest I have ever been at a game. It is the only time I can remember the queue for coffee and tea being twice as long as the one for beer!

I was going to say one of the games that season.

The carling cup nights were great. Leeds, Sunderland, Palace, Liverpool all electric.

:swfc:'s at home that year was awesome, Browns volley!!

But the Forest game... "Oh my god" as Peschi said!
I've got tingles just thinking about that night. That night will last forever inside me!

I also enjoyed the Luton game away when we won promotion. Dressed as Batman and Robin! "We'll never play you again!"

I'll beat Darren to it. Kat put us 1-0 up they brought it back to 2-1 in normal time, Walker (who is doing the comms for Sky on the SPL now!) scuffed one in, also in normal time then we held on during extra time with Ipswich hitting the woodwork and Kelly hobbling around on 1 leg. I remember Sky showed Wolves V Palace but cut to our game in extra time. Henry got sent off during extra time too.

Ipswich away play off final 1997. What a night

The longest night of my life...even more nerve wracking than Forest.

Remember banging on the back of their corrugated iron stand whilst singing the red and white army song.

The first 5 mins was like a victory parade, so confident were the home fans. When we scored I swear there was a gasp from the home support.

Sedgely hit the post with a free kick with the 2nd last kick of normal time. I almost had a heart attack. Whitehouse hoofed it away.

9 booked and 1 sent off, I recall...

Thanks Santos and Revolution. It's starting to come back to me now.

It's ture that Ipswich weree cocky as. They were celebrating and the atmosphere was carnival. Everybody had written us off! That was until we went 1 up. I think it was about 10 mins in when Petr broke away cracked one from just outside the area. It hit the underside of ther bar and bounced down about a foot over the line. Where we were sitting was directly in line with goal and it was clear that it had crossed the line. The linesman was perfectley positioned and he didn't hesitate in giving the goal. After that the home fans where drowned out by travelling support

coldest game ever was away at pride park and i think we lost 2-0. plenty of blades didn't make it because of snow and the roads were like an ice rink

most of mine are from way back ...............but

the 20mins of oh when the Blades at sid james park was a gud un !

4-3 :-)

Darren

Knew i could rely on you. thanks

All from memory , and mine aint what it used to be but in a desperate bid for memory brownie points - 1st for York was a Shot/ cross from miles out that caught the wind and sailed over Keith Waugh .

Tragic that i cant remember Birthdays and stuff but some goals are as vivid as yesterday

Crystal Palace away the night Paddy got stretchered off and jags went in goal, won 2-1 in the end (Nuddy and chief got the goals if my memory serves) Not many Blades made the trip but the support was relentless.

The first away win in our retrun to the PL you mean bb? If so, then yes that was a good night, and for that second half the atmosphere was cracking, the "oh when the blades" seemed to last forever and the fans on our coaches were getting clapped at by some of the (not protesting) geordies after the game - as if to say, "fair play to you"...

really weird watching a match that high up, you expect to be almost cut off from the game itself, but the Blades fans did themselves proud that night and Warnock even made a point of mentioning it on his Sky interview afterwards for the fans "up in the clouds/gods"...

UTB!

And the rest of the London Blades cowards were chastising me for celebrating on the train back into town.

"Shhhh there's some upset looking Palace fans there" Spineless wasters, You know who you are ;)

That still goes down as my coldest football match ever. It was worth it though.

That was the one......... i was there wi a magpie mate of mine .... they cudn't beleive how good our support was... them bloody stairs !

Darlington....enough said! :D

Certainly right up there.

The chant of "you're supposed to be inside" to the Darlo fans stood on a rubble heap outside the ground has lived with me to this day.

We were stood on the Darlo End and didnt even realise it till about 12 of theirs chanting "Darlo" walked down the touchline into the stand before kick off.

Never did see where they disappeared to next.

An away 3rd round FA Cup tie at Watford. It was absolutely freezing, the pitch was frozen. Touch and go if it would even be played, but because a good contingent was down from Sheffield I think they decided to let the game go ahead.

If I recall rightly Luther Blissett scored twice and after about 30 minutes we were 4-0 down. Cue the Blades to start jumping around on the away end. I'm sure most were just jumping to keep warm to start with, but it ended up being one constant singing session. We lost 5-0 and the Watford fans afterwards thought we were all completely nuts for being so happy at getting totally hammered! :)

March 1970 (or 71?).

A night match at home to Cardiff, who were our main rivals for promotion to the old first division.

Won 4-1 (or maybe 5-1). Best night of footballing life.

It was 5-1 and my first ever game (what a start! Its all been downhill from there)

Best atmosphere. Darlington, Div 4, 1981. 21,000 in the ground, 19,500 Blades. All the way there, all the way back, fancy dress, lads up the floodlights, Flintstones pitch invasion, what a day! We've had some tense nights since then, Arsenal in the PL being very special, but for that over-riding feeling of sheer success its Darlo for me...

Mind you Leicester was pretty good, especially hearing that the pigs had gone down...
