Wilder went for defensive solidity over creativity today. The game plan was probably to dominate possession, be physically superior, remain patient and avoid being hit on the break by a pacey Swansea side. This worked to some extent, but we struggled to penetrate until they started going forward more after the break.
Although they caused us problems, we also got some breaks and then went ahead. We still struggled to contain them and Wilder realised he had to do something, but they equalised before Woodburn could come on.
I think Wilder can't wait till Coutts is back. When he returns he'll play alongside Fleck with Duffy or Woodburn advanced. When that strong central trio is back the rest of the team will benefit. Currently we're trying to find the right formula for each game, but any combination see us remain vulnerable and individual players exposed, sometimes being required to do a little more than they're capable of.
This means we notice more the lack of dribbling and flair from Stevens; the lack of energy from Lundstram, being asked to bomb forward more than he's used to; dangerous passes from Egan and Basham, without a Coutts to pass to. If we'd started with Duffy or Woodburn we may have struggled even more with Swansea's pace on the break. There have been occasions when I've felt we've been extremely naive by playing Duffy behind two strikers.
Wilder isn't daft, he knows Duffy can help us create more. But while his best playmaker is out, we may have to get used to Wilder changing things, trying to get the balance right for each individual game.
