Benching Duffy

I can only assume the ' major bust up ' I've heard that's happened between Dufster and Tufty is true . How else can anyone explain Dufsters bizarre omission from the starting line up.?

I don’t think it’s a case of Duffy has to start, the midfield three of Fleck, Evans and Lundstrum can work, but the need strikers with better pace and movement in front of them.

McGoldrick did ok today but Clarke was woeful.

So you're wrong then. Surprisingly.
They’ve played well with a flat 3 and 2 strikers in 1 game, which you’ve pointed out. 1 game.

Let’s carry on then and keep it as is. We can have our yearly good performance in Norwich with it on our charge to League One.

I've said on another thread I thought we should play Duffy at home at least and I'm disappointed with Wilder's decision today.

You don't then need to claim we've never played well with a flat 3 which isn't true at all.

I didn’t go to Norwich. I’ve never seen us play well with a flat 3. And your only argument was Norwich so I’m assuming there aren’t any more.

If it makes you feel better to think Wilder is a moron or hates Duffy, which he must be if he plays in a way that 'we've never played well in' then I'll leave you to it.

Whilst I thought Clarke looked very pedestrian today, and there looked a distinct lack of pace with him and Mcgoldrick up top together (another CW mistake today I thought) they had sod all service or quick ball up to them all game. The service to them was abysmal. That waa because Evans and Lundstram are too negative and have no speed of thought, whilst our other attacking outlets namely the full backs were also off the pace. Tbf, Baldock did ok, Stevens was his usual Mr negative with wasteful crossing. The front lads were feeding off scraps.....again.

Wilder went for defensive solidity over creativity today. The game plan was probably to dominate possession, be physically superior, remain patient and avoid being hit on the break by a pacey Swansea side. This worked to some extent, but we struggled to penetrate until they started going forward more after the break.

Although they caused us problems, we also got some breaks and then went ahead. We still struggled to contain them and Wilder realised he had to do something, but they equalised before Woodburn could come on.

I think Wilder can't wait till Coutts is back. When he returns he'll play alongside Fleck with Duffy or Woodburn advanced. When that strong central trio is back the rest of the team will benefit. Currently we're trying to find the right formula for each game, but any combination see us remain vulnerable and individual players exposed, sometimes being required to do a little more than they're capable of.

This means we notice more the lack of dribbling and flair from Stevens; the lack of energy from Lundstram, being asked to bomb forward more than he's used to; dangerous passes from Egan and Basham, without a Coutts to pass to. If we'd started with Duffy or Woodburn we may have struggled even more with Swansea's pace on the break. There have been occasions when I've felt we've been extremely naive by playing Duffy behind two strikers.

Wilder isn't daft, he knows Duffy can help us create more. But while his best playmaker is out, we may have to get used to Wilder changing things, trying to get the balance right for each individual game.

Started in Portugal and has intensified since . They're barely speaking now .

Surely if that was the case he wouldn't even be in the squad? Don't see Chris a) fielding a player who he is barely on speaking terms with or b) allowing a situation to get to that stage with a player in the first place, he seems far to forthright to let things fester.

Just my view like, as I haven't heard what you have.

He talks shit when he’s had a drink to try and wind people up. Don’t worry about it :)

You'd think that if Duffy's legs have gone, or there had been a fall out, it would be stupid to send Holmes out on loan..........unless Wilder is lining up a replacement.
I doubt he would be relying on untried at this level Woodburn, to be the sole No 10 / creative player available for the season.
Even with a fully firing Coutts back in the team (if that happens) we still need that link between the midfield and forwards, which we had when we played at our best.

Someone try and explain the thought process to me please? It’s not like it’s a one off, it happens quite often and it’s fucking bizarre.

He’s the link between our midfield and strikers. They look lost without him. We look 1000 times better when he plays, even if he only manages 70 minutes so be it.

Playing Lundstram and Evans while Duffy is sat on the bench for 86 minutes... un fucking believable.

Reminds me of when he tried to keep shoehorning EEL into the centre of defence when Jake Wright’s record was outstanding.

If Wilder’s justification for benching Duffy is anything along the lines of his legs going then I wonder if a change of tack is needed.

Given we will miss out on Waghorn and haven’t touched the Brooks money, Woods at Brentford would be a good bet.

There’s no point pissing away 2 months of the season hoping Lundstram and Evans get some consistency. Woods would make the midfield stronger in lieu of Coutts and Coutts, Woods and Fleck would be excellent with Fleck a good candidate to take the Duffy spot.

You could then perhaps count Woodburn as a No 10 option and bring in one more up front, possibly on loan. No point to spend on a forward in a rush. But Woods would be a good long term investment.

We still wouldn’t have the creativity Duffy creates. Freeman for me.

I’d happily cash in on Lundstram tomorrow.

Him and Woodburn can rotate that position for me. Even better if we could get Luke Freeman in to allow Woodburn to play off one out and out forward. Really don’t want to see a straight three in there again.

Do think Wilder lost his bottle a bit after the Fulham game last season so if he’s really adamant he needs the extra bodies in the middle we should switch the formation to a 4-2-3-1, reckon we have a back 4 to do it properly now.

Duffy wasn't even able to do 90 minutes in the League One season. He's a couple years older now, and shocker, he still can't do 90 minutes.

What's the issue? We play him for 60/70 minutes and then make a sub. We desperately need a someone to compete for that spot, because without that creativity, we look mediocre.

Strange situation. We surely have to bring someone in.

Concur with you about games post Fulham and I'm not appy and want the brakes taking off again.

Exactly. Neither Lundstrum nor Evans are technically or tactically good enough to play in a 2 man central midfield. It is impossible t exaggerate the influence he has over our style of play and the tempo we play at.
