CONFIRMED Ben Woodburn - Season Long Loan

One of my favourite moments watching Wales in recent years was Woodburn’s debut goal to win the qualifier vs Austria. It was the clear highlight in an otherwise disappointing qualifying campaign.

To set the scene, Wales needed a win to maintain any serious hope of qualifying in the remaining games. It was a poor performance, Bale wasn’t able to get on the ball in advanced positions so was having to drop deeper to see any possession, and as the game entered the latter stages it was unclear where any goal would come from.

Cue the introduction of the hero of the Belgium game 2 years ago, Hal Robson-Kanu. Another guy was brought on at the same time, who I’d never seen before.

The crowd launched into a rousing rendition of Land Of My Fathers, and as the final notes of that ended, the ball fell to one of the substitutes...

Great goal - as good as the post itself - to think you could have just written "e scored dis goal". What's more, i f0ckin hate austria.

This is a great piece of business. Also a real coup to beat the others to get him, and underlines that the way Wilder has crafted this team has made us an attractive place for Premier League managers to send some of their most prized youngsters. Makes us a completely different proposition going forward – delighted with this.

I reckon this little stat now has some influence with PL clubs decisions about youngsters showing great promise

Woody?

Woody?

There is only one 'Woody'.

I'm guessing you are well under 50, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

:D

Thought I might get into bother with that mate, sincere apologies and correction duly noted.

Alas I was too young to witness the great man in action. Still in early forties.

Many unbiased non-Unitedites described him as one of the best players never to play for England.

You are forgiven as you are only 'early 40s', which makes you a babe in arms to many of us old farts.

Don't believe this has been posted yet, but Scouted Football have a good profile on Woodburn's ability and style of play from their last handbook - well worth a read:

In the 'Pool for the week, and we're taking over.

(Possibly not Blades related, mebbes Graff? Dunno).

Does anybody know what these "penalties" are that Liverpool have set in the Woodburn contract? It's clearly not that he must start the games.

From today's star:

"Everybody here gets in on their own merits," the United manager said. "I think that's important, not just for the group as a whole but also for the individuals within in. Fighting for a spot, no matter what stage of your career you are at, is part and parcel of football.
Of course, critics of Wilder's stance will argue United have already entered into a not dissimilar agreement after signing Ben Woodburn. Before sanctioning the Wales international's departure, Liverpool stipulated certain financial penalties would apply if he was left warming the bench or sat in the stands. There is, however, a key difference. United's coaching staff factored these into the costings presented to their board of directors before the deal was sealed. It was a signal, to both Woodburn and his representatives, that he was not guaranteed a place."

I imagine it's guranteed game time - either starting or from the bench . If no game time, the wage cost or loan fee will increase. There may also be a recall clause in January if he's not getting the game time. Wilders says he's happy to pay the financial penalty, and his selection will be wholly merit based; so it doesn't really matter. The worse case financial scenario is costed into our budget.

I suspect it's something like we will have to pay more of his wages when he doesn't play.

Doubt there is any specific minutes requirement either, seems to be getting on the field at some point during the 90 mins and wouldn't be surprised if thats enough to satisfy the clause

4 minutes on saturday. Haha.

A pig told me it's minimum of 600 minutes over a ten game period. If that's true, Wilder is clearly sticking two-fingers up at them

It's definitely the less they play the more you pay
Read a detailed article Bout it in the Liverpool echo pre season

He will come good.
Stop worrying about the fines/add ons.

18 years old.

Playing for another club after 12 years at Liverpool.

Started two games.

Already written off by some on here.

Classic.

Already helped us get 3 points with his excellent game management at QPR.

Liverpool have started doing this with loan players.

Warnock said as much when they signed the midfielder Grujic from them in the JTW. I believe Liverpool stipulated he had to play in 15 or 16 of the 19 games Cardiff had left to play OR pay a financial penalty. From memory Grujic played in most games for Cardiff. Doubt there is anything that says he MUST play, just that you pay more if he doesn't. When we signed Woodburn, CW eluded to this, that he was within our budget. The assumption for me is that we can afford not to play Woodburn in any game if we don't want to, as he is costed within our overall team budget.

As for the player himself - an opinion of of some, and me, is that we don't really know where to play him yet. Woodburn is a bit like Clarke - both need a goal or two to really kick things off for the pair of them.

Don't really see what the problem is here - the TEAM is just getting into gear now, playing some decent stuff and for sure, Woodburn will not start games unless of injuries. What he must do, is just be himself when he comes on - perhaps he is trying too hard to please - he's only 18 for fucks sake.

He didn't score a hat trick on his debut.

He deserves all he gets, the work-shy freeloading bastard.

PS - Back on Planet Earth, I like him. Looks a good signing but still obviously learning at a young age.

Send the useless cunt back and get Shaqiri instead.

Agree with many of the comments about BW. He's young, still learning, and even with all the plaudits so far received, the Championship is never going to be a stroll in the park for a young player, even one that's rated by Liverpool. I doubt that BW is someone who has let the praise he's received so far affect his view of himself, so a grounded (I hope!) lad who needs to learn quickly about the facts of life at this level. Perhaps he's played in the wrong position, but that's for Wilder to decide.

Wilder did well to bring in Woodburn, so I have little time with fair-weather opinions about the boy. Give him all the support we're capable of, it'll show Ben that we recognise a player who can play.

I think he's already shown glimpses of what he's about and I think we have a top manager and coaches who will definitely look after him in the right way.
