Ben Sheaf in the summer

Everyone assuming Reidewald will be here next season might be in for a shock. His contract is up in the summer and we’ll release him as part of cost cutting measures.

We might get Sheaf on loan (Wilder has been after him for long enough) but we won’t have the readies to buy without moving on 3 or 4 of our best players.

I believe we already have a 12 month extension option on him for next season.
We do, but we haven't yet asked him/his representatives, usually unless it's written in the contract, its as simple as you are staying here for another year however it depends on the clauses within the contract whether the decision is with the club or the player plus there are other contracts where if a contract expires within a set time frame they can look elsewhere.

Although not the greatest source it is an interview he did with the star on 13th March https://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/jairo-riedewald-sheffield-united-5625825

Where there are 2 interesting take away quotes “So I signed six months with an option to extend. So my deal is up in the summer,” is the first one then he went on to say "...So we’ll see in the summer what’s there for me.” - He did say he is enjoying his time at the club, but that latter statement is almost like saying he will see what the offer is so you do wonder if he has the control over the option or not. Personally my concerns are the uncertainty although we do have the option, a few other clubs have put stuff in the media saying they are sitting down with their players/managers that they have an option to extend to discuss their futures. Although it doesn't mean anything really, but for the fanbase silence is worse. Similarly although slightly different when we were trying to tie Bamford, the silence from the board was deafening even though Wilder in his Presser had said they had put a contract in front of him and it was out of his hands, you would like to think a mention from the board would be good. Based on this interview as of 2 weeks ago, Jairo doesn't know if he will be here next season. Jairo knows which level he will be playing at next season with us, so why wait until May to then try and rush an extension through. Get it done now if you want it done and the squad overall can start to take shape for next season.

As long as it's done before the start of pre season training, does it really matter? Why would you not wait until the season is done? If he was to tear his ACL in one of these remaining meaningless fixtures I'd rather he do it before he signs an extension rather than after it

I can see your point on that side of things, the grey area/no standardisation of football contracts means he could be on a few different versions. Start of Pre-season training wont be until mid June-Start of July, his contract would have expired by then and open for to the market for contract talks with others. Some contracts have a clause in them that allow the player to nullify the contract (for the option to extend) if there is less than 3 months remaining (as of tomorrow) and speak with other clubs.

According to the below, this is potentially speculation but might well be true due to his injury record that he is on only £7,700.00 per week with a bonus of £48,000 when previously he was on £55,000 a week at Palace

The option to extend would be on the same basis value wise, which if we delay too long, a fair few championship clubs could come sniffing with a £10,000 a week pay increase or maybe even a newly promoted Premier League side too, which then causes us to try and convince him of us as the best destination. I would like to think Jairo is loyal to the club that found him back to first team football but at the end of the day also he has to be in it for himself like any footballer. Wilder only likes to play him for an hour anyway, if the contract values are correct (Hamer's is accurate according to reports from that site) it would be daft to risk anyone taking him, even if he was missing for 1/2 a season, it's not exactly a costly in terms of expense loss.

Got to get Jairo to agree terms, if I was Wilder I presume he has Jairo in his plans for next season, I would be pushing the board on that. We want him tied down before there is a potential for other clubs to come sniffing like what was happening with Bamford before he agreed the 18 month deal. I would hope with Jairo at least a 2 or 3 year deal given his age.
We have a year option on Jairo extending that option is a no brainer . The wage he is on will carry forward I assume! Players will not sign for peanuts them days are gone .

It could well be that taking up the option and extending the contract triggers a pay increase, and that is what persuaded him to agree to the option.

Could be! But he was desperate for first team football so maybe the terms are favourable to us .
Saying that we have to be fair to the player or it would be a futile exercise.

We do have the year option however we still need to offer it/trigger it. There could well be a bonus/wage increase for the next season however reading from different sources online it muddies the water in a sense of who has control, a lot mention that most contracts that have 3 months or less to run the player can opt out of an automatic contract extension. Others say that it’s secured by the club until the end of the current contract which is 1st June. I think it would help the squad to know who is likely to be here next season. We have under 10 weeks until his contract runs out. Yes in theory we could be waiting until the season is done but it doesn’t help the impression of the club when Jairo is openly talking to the local paper saying that he hasn’t signed on for next season yet. A simple message from the board or authorised through Wilder saying they are chatting internally and it makes it look like we have our ducks in a row a bit more
