Bristol City fan in peace here. I wrote this out Friday night but have only just been accepted to post so I'll just copy and paste it rather than change all the tenses so forgive me. Also, a lot of it feels fairly insignificant now, but I wrote the bloody thing out so am going to post it regardless.

-------

I'm gonna set my stall out early... I didn't go tonight, so maybe all my comments will be taken with a pinch of salt and if so, I don't blame you. I'm always dubious of those that watch it on the telly. But the two times I've been to Bramall Lane we've lost 3-0 and 2-0 and didn't fancy a Friday night trip back home after coming up to Sheffield three weeks ago to see us nick a point against your city counterparts. (Little one for you - we sang "Just like Bristol, your city is red" for a while. They didn't like that much.)

First and foremost - well played tonight. You guys absolutely battered us and to come away with anything from the game, let alone 3 points, is daylight (well, Friday night) robbery. If it was the other way around I'd be leaving the ground scratching my head how we didn't win. A hell of a lot of luck from you hitting the woodwork numerous times; a genuine top class save from Fielding in the first half that I think any keeper in the world would be happy to make; and a couple of last ditch challenges and blocks. Once you got the equaliser I felt it was only a matter of time before you got the 2nd and then fully expected a 3-1 home win.

And then Fleck made a reckless challenge and it was a different game. I'm not gonna go into it too much because it's obviously a contentious one. But it looked bad from the telly and on all the replays. I'm all for a physical game but on another day that could break a leg IMO. Also, to those who don't know him - presumably all of you, Korey Smith isn't the sort of player to hobble off without it being bad. He's a trooper that has played through injury numerous times. It looks likely to be a contact one and just bruising apparently, so probably only a couple of weeks off like some of you intimated, but if he could have played on, he would. And the injury to a player doesn't classify a red or not. For me it was deserving, but obviously I'm biased.

I'd say from there, Wilder cost you a point. We've struggled this season against teams that sit in and defend. Obviously at home, you don't want to do that. But as soon as you continued to attack us, the opportunity was always going to come and Flint has a habit of winning games late for us right now. The big difference between us this year and last, is we're now winning games in the final ten, not losing them. We weren't at our best tonight, far from it. LJ wasn't happy at full time but ultimately we won and we had patches of nice football in the middle third and scored a couple of good goals as a result of some pretty solid refereeing to give the advantages.

On another day, we'd have been 4-0 down by half time, Fleck probably wouldn't have made the challenge. It would have been a cricket score and we'd be questioning whether this was the beginning of a fall away with all of our league and cup games taking its toll. Instead, we got fortunate and can come away with 3 points. I can't talk for the Wolves game as I wasn't there, but your lot are the best footballing side I've seen this season - much better than the soul-selling dragon-sh*ggers across the bridge; and even with Coutts out, you look solid. Clarke is in the form of his life and Wilder is a top coach. I can see us both in the play offs come the end of the season, possibly us just outside as I fear the injuries we're picking up and the young side we have may mean that we get caught out as we start to tire towards the tail end of the season. I hope I'm wrong.

You're a very similar side in style and squad to us. A bit older in general, but a fairly youthful squad with no real superstars or household names, but a squad that plays for each other, has good movement and attacks well. You'll be there or thereabouts come May, no doubt about it.

I'm sure now is not the time for rational opinions on your end as it's a bloody frustrating one for you, and I've seen some of you say we're the worst side you've seen apart from Hull and others say we're one of the best. I guess it's down to opinion but I'd say we're a very good midtable side that underperformed last year and is overperforming this year. But then I'd have said the same about Huddersfield last year and look how they've ended up.

Good luck for the rest of the season. Maybe the final day will be a preview of the Play Off final a few weeks later.

And I thought both Bristol Citys goals were of the classic sucker punch style, there wasnt anything particularly flukey about them, it was obvious they were looking to wait for a chance to come against the run of play...both teams have shown on the form so far this season they are good enough for a top 6 spot

Thank you for that. I agree with almost everything you've said. Main points being that the sending off was correct and much as I like the way Wilder has got us playing, he did throw a (very hard earned) point away on Friday.

Thanks for the platitudes, but I'd rather have had the 3 points...

It’s the main issue with Wilder really.

He’s always positive and plays attacking football home and away regardless of the oppostion.
Instead of his players concentrating on stopping the opposition with various complicated tactics, he practices offensive tactics playing to the players strengths. It’s worked really well so far and most Blades are really happy.
It’s weird, we put in a performance (play decent) virtually every match and what’s even more weird is that virtually every game we play is entertaining.

However it’s becoming clear that Wilders positivity sometimes backfires and costs us points. Although in fairness he knows this and has admitted it but says he won’t change his positive attitude.
Fulham are a great counter attacking side but can’t break down resistive defences because they over play.
So we ignored their strengths and played right into their hands attacking them.
It almost worked because we had them on the rack too but on the counter attack Fulham were superb.
A really entertaining match ended up a 4-5 defeat and we played quite well again even though we lost.

Great OP. Thanks for sharing. I saw the game as you did.

Johnny Red, always appreciate your postings but I’d probably disagree about elements of the winner not being fortuitous.

I’m one who says under the letter of the law Fleck was right to receive a red. As I’m happy to be just on my own player it’s not sour grapes applting the same to the opposition. Under the letter of the law, there was a head high foot in the build up which should have been called as a foul. The cross which fell to Flint, which he expertly finished, was deflected and fell right into his path. That was at least 2 elements of good fortune, even if the shot was very well taken.

In both cases the letter of law either applies or it doesn’t, but it shouldn’t apply in one instance and not the other.

I reckon you’ve got to weigh it up and I’d say we have probably won more matches than lost as a result of the tactics even this season, had a few unlucky losses that were just frustrating like Middlesbrough and a couple where maybe we could have held on for a point. A good few games where we could have took a point but pushed on and won though IMO

We need to look at the bigger picture. Against Leeds and at Hillsborough he could have settled for a draw. Against Bristol City he could have settled for a draw. Result would have been a total of 3 points.

As it turns out we ended with 6.

Draw specialists reside in S6 and there's a meltdown going on over there.

Definitely in the 'go for it' camp, and support Wilder in his endeavours to win every game.
As a team we look better when we take the game to the opposition and play to our strengths.
Not only will we pick up more points over the course of the season, but us fans will see some great games.
Keep up the good work. UTB.

Yes indeed there is a small failing club in Brum that also calls itself BCFC!

Fair play.
Shame all fans can’t be so level and fair minded.
As for the game, that’s football. You can’t win every week, unless you are Man City it seems. And there are games where things just don’t fall your way. Our season was hit hard the minute we lost Coutts for the season, a very good player who is the key to our last two seasons but without him we have still done enough to win 3 of our last 4 games. We just don’t have the same control in midfield without him which in turn then exposes our defence more and has ultimately cost us.
We will sort it, maybe in January, maybe not. But the team will find a tweak to the system to get results again.

Great post mate!

But I the think ‘soul-selling dragon-sh*ggers across the bridge’ are crap, you should take a look at soul-selling truffle munchers across our city. They’ve taken tedious to a whole new level.

A good post and I agree with most of it..BUT I don't want Chris Wilder to play for a FUC***G point i want him to try and win the game no matter what...Ive had it with managers in the past at the Lane trying to play for a point. I hope Wilder will always play to win no matter what.. I pays my money and Wilder's football is a breath of fresh air. Yes we may lose some because of this but we will win many many more playing Wilders way than we would playing an awful defensive minded way like we have in the past..It produced mid table boring Crap....Keep playing your way Chris...even if we go down to eight men......UTB FTP

I'm sure now is not the time for rational opinions on your end as it's a bloody frustrating one for you, and I've seen some of you say we're the worst side you've seen apart from Hull and others say we're one of the best.

The Hull comparison's an interesting one, because they went 1-0 up, undeservedly, and then got steamrollered in the second half & collapsed in the face of an onslaught. Would the same have happened if Fleck hadn't have got sent off? We were certainly smelling blood at that stage.

Also worth mentioning is that we've seen Wolves here getting a man sent off & then, defensively, just retreating into their shells. They got dominated (until we got 2 goals up) every bit as much as Hull were.

So, it's difficult to tell. Clearly Wolves are class. And so are your lot from what I've seen on streams this season (with a similar type of style to us as a rule).

As we've found, going to Millwall and QPR say, the opposition can sometimes have a pretty overwhelming say in how you're allowed to play. I suppose in those circumstances you just have to find a way. Which is what you did, & credit to you.

If we'd have sat back and defended at 10 men we may have got a point it has to be said... But we may also NOT have got a point... I'd rather see a team of ten men try and win the game and fail than try and draw the game and fail.
We've had years of Blackwell's Wilson's Clough's and Adkins ... Who all would've gone for a point after 10men, but i know which manager we would ALL rather have though. Keep it up wilder

Ta for the kind words all. Not sure I'm necessarily particularly level headed, and not any more so than most of our fanbase, I guess it's just natural to pick out fans that write extreme reviews and posts, particularly as many will do so in an attempt to goad.

In terms of the playing for a point scenario; I totally agree, as a general rule, going for the win is a much more positive way forward and a philosophy I support and think we do much more now than we did 12 months ago. However, my point was more that, with 20 minutes to go as we were starting to really dominate possession for the first time all game, it would have been much more difficult for us - as has been proved by the likes of Burton, Millwall and Preston who have turned up and parked the bus in order to get a result at AG this season - if you guys had sat in more. There were periods when you played deep and nearly caught us on the counter, but I felt if you'd done that slightly more in the final 20, you would probably have had the point and still possibly nabbed all 3. We seriously struggle to break teams down when they sit in, and with three of our key forward thinking players injured/substituted already, I was surprised that you didn't play into our weaknesses more. But then, that's coming from a fan that spent all of last season watching us throw away winning positions and leaving grounds with zilch.

Anyway, I would say good luck for Saturday but a result for Preston would do us the world of good, so can't do that I'm afraid. As a City fan that has seen us capitulate year on year in this division, I want as many points cushion as possible; so any points that you, Crapdiff, Villa, Derby or Boro drop, I'll be gunning for all day long.

Catch you soon. COYR.

I'd say from there, Wilder cost you a point. We've struggled this season against teams that sit in and defend. Obviously at home, you don't want to do that. But as soon as you continued to attack us, the opportunity was always going to come and Flint has a habit of winning games late for us right now.

If he had gone defensive and we had lost, he would've taken a lot of stick. It's no longer in our DNA to sit back. We try to win every game, in every situation, hence the reason we have only drawn once.
