One of my best friends is an ex pro ,who played for 15 years top level football and its true , he never had to do anything. When he retired he didn't have a clue about anything to do with everyday life ,his wife and clubs do everything to take away any external pressures from the game ,so he was like a school leaver learning all over again.

All we know for certain at the moment is Baxter has failed a drug test and has been suspended. At best, shit publicity for the club.

What he had in his system we don't know or the circumstances. Baxter claims no wrongdoing, but he would wouldn't he. If he ultimately gets suspended then the club need to take a decision as to what to do with him (some of the rehabilitation stances taken in the Ched scenario may well prove an issue for the Board, as is the cost of writing off any transfer fee that could be realised - though this will be reduced significantly). Baxter may or may not have a career at the end of this - I suspect someone would take a punt on him if he was free. Not much point speculating until we know the outcome and the Board's decision. Surprised, not really. Disappointed, yes.

always said footballers 90% are thick as planks , Baxter could have been a fabulous player ,but lacks any form of self discipline
and unfortunately its one trait you cant spot until you've signed players

Fa rules on testing are ...........test straight before or after game is in competition.positive sample =up to 2 years ban. any other time that isnt a matchday positive result = up to 3 months ban. this only applys for recreational drug use, not performence enhancing where the penalties are much stricter

Out of competition is up to 6 months but is often 3 months for a first offence.

I suspect if Baxter challenges and doesn't persuade them of no wrongdoing, he'll get 6 months.

I know in my lads case ,if they even suspect they might have been spiked they have to report to base and it immediately becomes a police matter. Police take spiking very seriously ,obviously because of date rape drugs mainly. But you wouldnt put it past someone spiking a footballers drink out of jealousy or spite.

It happened to my mates' son (in Sheffield). He thinks he might have picked up the drink of a girl he was with but he wasn't sure. We're fairly sure if it was self inflicted he would have admitted to it.

Absolutely agree, if Baxter was spiked he should have informed the club as soon as he was able. But then I suppose you could argue that if he drunkenly took something and then woke up the next day realising how stupid he'd been, he could just claim he'd been spiked.

The best way to avoid temptation is to avoid situations where you may be tempted but it's a lot easier to do when you're 45 than it is when you're 25.

Didn't Weir sign him? Surely with his connections he'd be aware of Jose's character. And his past record, which I believe was public knowledge.

Its a tricky one - we have backed ourselves into a corner with Ched - talking about players being allowed to rehabilitate after making mistakes etc. One thing Baxter deserves is a chance to prove he hasnt done any wrong doing (which he claims) - if this is the case, or if he can prove this is the case.

My feeling is that he will get a ban, then when available again, Clough will ship him out on loan until the contract ends.

Its a shame, as Baxter can be a class act - he is the best passer of the ball at the club and still just only 23. I dont buy the tired suggestion he has done nothing all year - when he finished top scorer and was at the centre of some of our best play (pass to O Grady, header to Murphy against Donny).

But ultimately, he will have to take responsibilty for his own actions - for letting the club, and fans like me, who rate him, down - if indeed he is guilty.

Interesting take on this from The Secret Footballer in a piece on Livermore today.

On Saturday, it emerged that Sheffield United midfielder Jose Baxter had failed an out-of-competition drugs test and had been suspended by the League 1 club.

I asked a friend who knows Baxter well whether he knew he was up to something that he shouldn’t be. “Didn’t have a clue, mate,” came the reply, “but I’d be really surprised if he was. He’s a decent kid.”

He went on to tell me that Baxter had told him that he believes he was spiked on a recent night out in London. The drug in question is Ecstasy.

Don’t forget, Hull will have no insurance cover for this. There are some clubs that can’t even afford blanket cover for career-ending injuries to their playing staff, let alone added extras such as drug abuse.

I'm not sure if he's just talking about financial compensation for losing an £8m player, but surely in the event we wanted to sack Baxter we'd not have to pay up his remaining contract?

Night out in London ? He was probably tested in the week after the Orient game then.

He played 90 minutes at Orient and against Chesterfield.

During the week after the Chesterfield game and before the Swindon game, he'll have got the dreaded results back.

Who did he speak to about any concerns about his night out in London ?
