Bash's performance

Me and a few others were doing a "backs to the wall" defence of Basham a few months ago on this forum. It's strange isn't it that the two players (him and Billy) who were copping the lions share of criticism around that time have turned out to be our best and most effective players this season.

Basham has surely won over his critics, he is outstanding at the moment and Wilder has developed him into the player we never thought he would be.

Only Bash, O'Connell and Sharp were at it for the full 90 minutes today.

It's telling though that even when we only produce a 6 out of 10 display like today we still have too much for most of the teams in this league.

Basham was immense. He hasn't always been my favourite player but he looks better and better in this 3 man defence on the right (he also stepped into midfield 2nd half for a period and that gave us the extra man for a time which was very good management.)

As for the 6/10 comment, I know where you are coming from but I think we have to give the fat scouser a bit of credit for that. He set his side up to play to our weakness, just like Rosler did, and it caused us problems for big parts of the game. Wilder was very good in acknowledging how good Charlton were, but also damning in his comment about us turning up every week ("proper footballers" was his quote I think).

Even when the opposition have worked out how to play against us and trained hard to set up the best way and even execute it correctly, they've still got to stop us and Charlton couldn't today

Immensely proud of the team I support tonight

Basham was everywhere today, he looked very confident on the ball as well

His fitness levels are absolutely incredible. It's not an exaggeration when people say he was everywhere, he literally was and that includes charging down their goalkeeper in the last 5 minutes!
Special mention to Lafferty too who also comes in for criticism but he also has incredible fitness levels and forever makes himself available up and down the left wing for 90 mins

Have to say that I'm not a big Bash fan (see what I dd there?) but last few games he's been a proper leader when one or two others have maybe dropped a little. Deserved MOtM today. Bob Booker Mk2

Player of the season for me.

Been shoved from pillar to post and always delivers what is asked of him

I agree. Because of his goals I think Billy will win player of the season, but personally I would make them joint winners.

Bash is a great leader, shows great commitment, never hides and I love the way he gees the crowd up when we score.

Basham must be the fittest player in the division.

He's a natural runner. Could see him doing the 1500m if he wasn't a footballer!

This !

And this !

he's one of the most improved players I've ever seen in a utd shirt.

We routinely talk about how Wilder has got the very best out of Coutts and Freeman, when many supporters thought they were finished with us. I think it's time to add Bash to the routinely-reiterated list.

He's been quality recently and much more than a decent squad player many had him pegged as. 3 man defence seems to suit him imo.

One of the first names on the team sheets for me now as well as cover in defence, wing back, centre mid.

Bash is a far better footballer than Booker ever was. Indeed this team are all far better footballers than we have had since Currie's day. They are an absolute delight to watch and the quality of the football way above League One level. If that was a 6/10 from us [I don't agree, by the way] it would be a 9 or 10 from most teams in this league and some in the league above.

We are playing fantastic football this season. It's a team to be proud of.

Looked like we play

Looked like we played with a back 4 for most of the game to me. Bash played well but thought O'Connell wasMOM. Best player on the pitch was Ricky Holmes.
Ricky Holmes played well but missed a couple of great opportunities, Bash much more effective for me - he was immense. Their number 7 looked really good too.
A great 3 point today after a very dodgy start, they played very well in spells and looked dangerous throughout. I can see why that is the first game they have lost to a top 8 club.

I have had my doubts over Bash but i must admit he has been outstanding at the right of a back three. Will be very interesting to see CWs next move for a centre back as we at least need to cover EEL going back.

Does he get one or two in?

Bash was awesome today - mention from me to Duffy as well.

Final ball not always as planned but he was involved with a lot of good stuff in and around the midfield.

UTB !!

The whole defence was a bit of a shambles really, JOC and EEL struggled to keep a line and backed off far too much, Basham was initially just as bad until he moved in front of them and became the greatest destroyer in footballing history, doing the work of all three centre backs in the slightly higher line they'd all have been playing if Wright had been on the pitch to marshall them. Freeman kept dropping back as if he was playing in a back 4, but the message never seemed to get to Lafferty who stayed in more of a wing back position. We got away with it today, but we can't defend with a kamikaze back four like that and expect Basham to do that amount of mopping up all over the pitch as a regular thing.

Defo mom but some of the superlatives are a bit ott, its funny how he has found his best position at this time in his career, I remember Wilder saying at the beginning of the season, no more square pegs in round holes, yet bash was a midfielder and here we are with bash one of the first name's on the team sheet, a lot if us liked him but didn't rate him, well bash my friend you are fast becoming a cult hero, in a few years when we look back on this season we will be talking about the Holy trinity, and rightly so, and billy's goals and rightly so, and big bash, and rightly so. I bet he's enjoying the ride more than most

I agree about Bash. As for marks out of ten my mark is that I`m walking around with a smile on my face.

He skied (or skied) several shots though. We've got Duffy as our Holmes and I'd have liked us to have signed Holmes at the start of the season but I like the duffster so wouldn't change a thing.

Not sure about a back four, I thought we had a three but basham was sweeping in front. In other games, wright sweeps behind. The way they played it meant basham was more like the '1' in a 4-1-3-2 rather than a 5-3-2 (in a boborkis/Quinn as wingbacks comparison. Either way he's better with the game in front of him and I love three centre backs because it means you can amend it depending on the opposition. There we're a couple of times when he got skinned and if he was one of two centre halves we'd halve been in trouble but we had three so we swatted the threat away.

I wasn't there but it sounds like the managers change of tactics were great.

Pleased for Bash, a real club man and team man.

First half of the season bashams name being on the team sheet usually resulted in a soft goal being conceded which he would be at fault for so well done lad on finding the concentration levels needed to play at the top of your game

Put it down to good coaching

And fitness.

I think there are several players who might surprise many of us when it comes to being capable enough to compete in the Championship. Bash has shown the type of dedication that other players can learn from. Top player and professional.

Basham mom by a mile
I would have dragged coutts off after 20 minutes. Welcome back the real mr coutts
I think Coutts is a luxury player i.e. when we're on top of our game and winning, he's a part of it. Like you said about yesterday, when we're under the cosh and we need steel in the middle, he goes missing.

He's been great recently i agree but to say that any criticism of him is unjustified is absolute bullshit, prior to the last couple of months he hasn't been that great and was quite suspect at the back making a lot of mistakes, been a lot better recently and long may it continue.
