We've seen Basham play at centre half and centre mid for last season and this season where would people prefer him to play?

We have 1 decent centre half and 2 average ones. We currently have no defensive cms.

He plays in cm for me.

I really don't know, he really isn't a great midfielder or defender, even for this league.
Doesn't help the defense enough when he's in the midfield, he isn't a goal scorer either and he hasn't been much of a creator.
I just don't think he offers much, he's ok but not a player to hold onto if we get promoted.

He's a centre mid. Those who think he's better at centre half probably think he doesn't run around tackling enough in midfield but modern holding midfielders don't do that. He's very good at providing a presence, holding down territory and linking play. He would be wasted at centre half although he can do that job well enough when required.

I'm a fan of old fashioned central midfielders who do more that just provide a presence and actually bloody do something while they're at it. Quite why people are so accepting of such a lightweight nesh none entity 'holding down territory' is a mystery, the opposition just go a bit to the left of his territory or a bit to the right of his territory and he just lets them run on by. In a midfield three it's not so bad as there's someone else existing nearby. Basham is better at centre back because there he actually attempts to tackle people.

The correct answer to this question is a backup for both position on the bench with superior centre backs and central midfielders on the pitch.

Blackpool seafront

Where would he have fitted in last nights side.

For me only as CB.

His reactions and speed of thought/passing not quick enough in 433.

More than good enough and organiser at CB

Centre half bearing in mind the lack of options in that position, or substitute

His best position for me is centre half but as part of a 3 in midfield he is very very capable. And the lack of options there means he has to stay in midfield for the time being, hopefully Adkins alters the formation to suit.

Bench at the moment. Give Coutts a run in Cm, he played there last night when he came on and was physical , held it up and sprayed it around

I've voted CB because I think that is his best position. Over the games he has played, I think he has had a higher percentage of good games at CB rather than CM. However, our midfield needs him now. The rest are too lightweight and offer virtually no protection to the defence. We have OK centre halfs so in the current set up, I think he has to play CM.

Absolutely. I want my midfielders playing football, not holding anything or providing presents. Some presents are heavy and/or come in large boxes. As for holding down territory, what about the Russian lad Putin?

Gerrimin!

Gerremalloldinsumat.

He doesn't protect the defence. Decent midfielders run straight past him, just like they did Montgomery, who fooled too many of you for far, far too long.

Get Paul Coutts in the middle, hopefully with Hammond before too long.

The manager has made the lad captain while he is playing in midfield and he has only seen him play in midfield as yet ;that speaks volumes to me, not that I rate him in midfield personally.

Not sure making him captain means that much. ;)

Very very capable of what.

Losing his man
Losing the ball
Passing the ball in to touch

He's just an average footballer, but credit where it's due, he looks like he wants it. In the Swindon 5-5, he was the only person who was geeing the players up and essentially saying "this isn't f**ing good enough so get your arses in gear."

He has no judgement/reading of the game to play centre half and strikers get away from him too easily. He can play an entire half and you forget he's on the pitch in midfield.

I like him and he obviously wants to play for us, but agree with many on here - he should be a back-up for the first team and not one to take with us if we go up.

Good question in the OP. After the Barnsley away game last season when Basham was a colossus in centre mid, I had him nailed on as that position. On this season's performances I'm now wondering if that was a one off. If he's to stay at cm then I think him and Baxter want to swap midfield roles round. This season it seems Baxter sits in midfield, while Basham is trying to be box-to-box - I don't think either role suits them. If I was Atkins I'd be telling Basham sit in midfield, win his headers and tackles and play it simple to Baxter or or the wide players. And Baxter should be more advanced pulling the strings behind the front 1 or 2.

Unless the manager brings in a defensive cm, then Basham has to stay there. If Adkins brings someone in then I'd consider moving him back for the simple reason, on last seasons performances at centre half, he'd probably do a better job than either of the current two.

I think the reason why both Clough and Adkins have been reluctant to play him there is his mediocre playmaking. They both value a deep midfielder who is comfortable in possession and always looking to help defenders out when they have the ball.
