After years of reading this forum, finally felt my time is up and needed to post. I’m in my 30s but have never felt younger when it comes to supporting this club. I wake up in the morning and google ‘Sheffield United”. I watch re-runs of Blades games on YouTube when I feel slightly down. We’ve been in a higher league in the time I’ve been supporting, however nothing comes close to this.

We have a rag tag bunch of personalities. A future star in goal, no nonsense-make-great-decisions defenders in Egan and O’Connell. Wing backs that bring so much energy and skill. Norwood runs the operation, Fleck dives it and Duffy orchestrates. McGoldrick brings style and class and Billy makes you feel fortunate that he grew up following our team.

But the one man that personifies it all is Basham. A one man wrecking mission that’s one part genius, one part octopus, final part disaster waiting-to-happen and 100% Sheffield United. He’s not perfect, we’re not perfect but Jesus, he’s a huge part of our identity.

Wilder will deservedly be remembered for generations but it’s folk like Bash that separate us from the footballing elite, and reminds us of what football is really about.

Nice post young un and welcome.
Every team should contain a Basham. Yes he could be a bit better defensively at times but what energy and desire (and no shortage of skill).
Cut him and I bet he bleeds red and white stripes.
favourite player at the moment and we have a lot to choose from.

Good first post Chris. How's Mrs Basham and the little one?

Cloughs second best signing.

I agree and I remember you, I and a few others (in the early days) recognising what he was and what he could do. Was misunderstood (as well as Coutts) in the early days by a significant number.

'Like' to post record for an opening post smashed.

Well done sir!

Great post and agree with all of that except the last bit. Bash is the opposite of what football is all about these days in that he appreciates what loyalty means and is one the few willing to die for the cause rather than money. He's a rarity in that his footballing attributes are almost secondary. I'm half expecting him to sit on the tram next to me on his way to the match at some point, he's a real throwback.

A one man wrecking mission that’s one part genius, one part octopus.

When he goes on one of his rampages, with arms and legs flying, we always say he’s like a headless giraffe.

He has all of the lovable sides of a North Eastern character, without the often-found chip on the shoulder.

I can imagine him in the front line in the Middle Ages, with his sword and shield, or first over the top in the Great War - a True Brit.

Magic

Coutts #1?
You aren't allowed to point these players out as many on here insist he had no idea in the transfer market. You can also add Freeman and Che Adams to the list with the latter hopefully about to add a couple of million to our transfer kitty.

Great opening post fella & sums up how a lot of Blades are feeling at the moment. I remember watching Bash when he first came & thinking at times he looked like a newborn foal in a paddock, but just had a feeling that he had qualities in him waiting for a good coach to mold him into a real player. His desire & enthusiasm were evident, but let's not be fooled into thinking that is all he is, make no mistake he has skill in abundance too. He might not be "worth" what some of our players would fetch in the transfer market but to us he really is priceless.

"His name is Chrissy Basham, hooraye hooraye aye
You will think he's Beckenbauer, when you see him play
Bashambauer, Bashambauer ,Bashambauer,
Bashambauer, Bashambauer Bashambau-err
Bashambuaer Bashambuaer Bashambauer
BASHAMBAUER "

Yep, I'm in with you two, but then I liked Monty too.

I liked Monty too - he was effective when we had numerous "ball" players around him.
When he had to be a main man and Micky Adams signed Doyle to play at the side of him - relegation was just a formality that season.
Wait while pinchy gets hold of your post !

Gave me goosebumps man

I remember the talks about whether he was a full back, a centre back, or a midfielder, and thinking he had that classic utility player problem of not being quite good enough to play any of them convincingly.

Has this amazing ability to run round three players without ever looking like he's remotely in control of the ball. If I didn't see him do it every week I'd think it was dumb luck.

He's another one of those players that Wilder figured out quickly how to make the most of. Instead of a utility player he now looks like he was custom made for the role of attacking centre half, a position I didn't know existed until Wilder.

Brilliant! I can't remember ever struggling to pick my favorite player in a United squad. What a bunch of legends we have at the moment.

Waiting for my bashambauer poster from shoreham st magnifique to arrive to add to the blades wall in my apartment!
