Baffling squad assembling

Many good posts about changing the set up and it needs to happen.

Of course Wilder probably isn’t happy at selling players than not having any money to spend. “The board have fucked him over”. Brooks was sold on day 1 of the window, Hamer rejected a contract, presumably some weeks before the end of the season. Fair enough O’Hare was last minute but we should have been looking for a player to compliment/use instead of anyway.

Is this seriously the best we could have done ? Was this the plan all along, to return to a 4-4-2 ? I’d love to know if Wilder is happy with who he’s got and who the other targets were. I wonder what he’d have done with £30m

This is where a DOF can come in to advise the owners and say the guy wants old has beens OR that he’s put some really good suggestions/visions forward and it’s just not come off. To be fair, Wilder maybe needs to hear that his squad is fucking wank.

The owners are clueless so do need some sort of ‘impartial’ advisor. But they’ll have Wilder & Bettis resisting it and it sounds like they attempted it with James Bord and that spectacularly backfired !

I don’t know how they can get to the point where they can make a decision on the restructuring. They can’t ask the Prince now 😂

Other than "sign older players I have a personal relationship with", I'm not sure there's was a plan. I think we recruited who was on the list with a plan to make something out of it later

It got to the point that i dont think many players actually wanted to come here with the whole uncertainty at the moment, hence why we were struggling to get players in, only those who had been here previously, the anomaly being Kitching

Wilder has it made. Like a dysfunctional mafia family, or buying your bored/alcoholic partner a Gin bar to run.

Best mate as CEO.

Owners who have no idea, and are wowed by some cunt and his powerpoint. So fuck knows what they can grasp from this.

No one above him making any other decisions, literally has the keys to the fucking club. No intelligent, respected footballing people in director positions or scouting.

His own Josef Goebels esque friendship group on social media, whipping fans up in a frenzy if we even hint at deciding to change things.

An old guard of miserable bastards being our most vocal fans. Any criticism of Wilder is met with a strawman defence of “knows the club” and “his past successes.”

Clubs going down in a tailspin. Too late to react, as always. This has been going on since 2021. Wasted money, cult of personality bullshit, one dimension in all aspects.

I’m fed up with this club. Always been the same since the late 70’s. No modernity.

Fuck Bettis off. Cut off this umbilical cord of Bladey Bladeness and League 1 (2016) management.

Message to the owners:

Get a proper functional, and experienced bunch making decisions. Take that pressure away from yourselfs and hire people who know what they’re doing with proven success to run the club. That will take the bulk of cost, come up with a long term strategy, don’t shit yourself because “Wit_xx” decides whether it’s successful or not, if we don’t see immediate results.

Fucking invest in scouting networks, take a leaf out of whoever is running the academy, because for the last 10 years they’ve been doing a better job than whatever shit we have in the first team.

FITNESS FITNESS FITNESS. Fuck players off who think they can take the piss on the clubs money. They’re professionals ffs, the culture is rotten to the core. It’s a massive and glaring issue. Every other club looks so much athletic compared to ours.

Hire a manager who has a plan B and is ambitious enough to take is forward, backed by a strong as fuck structure upstairs.

WEVE NOT HAD ANY SUSTAINED TOP FLIGHT SUCESS SINCE 1976.
At last some sense! Sadly the bladey blades will be along shortly and rip you to shreds, probably starting with... " if your not satisfied fck off to Hillsborough " its got that sad!! The club as got to come out of the 80s and stop being run like some Sunday league mob ffs!

mousinho & wellens yes. not sure on mccann or leam richardson, cowley i think was never the same post covid,

id go dave challinor
Challinor has a highly impressive record of lower league success. Looking at his history he’s pretty much either got promoted or been on the end of season shake up each season.

If the axe was ever to fall, he has a pretty compelling CV. Similar to Wilder before he came to us really. He also has a really long throw, which should appeal to our fanbase 🤣

His preferred formation is 3-4-2-1 apparently.

Not sure, I think fans would be fine if they saw a genuinely better alternative would come in and the board would appoint them (I say them as it could be male or female for me but there is another can of worms). Just don’t honk fans think it would happen so we stick with someone we know is a decent manager (which Wilder is). It’s catch 22 really.
When they do get rid of Wilder the new person would be under pressure from the start. A few bad result and it will be we shouldn't have got rid of Wilder, get Billy in he knows the club, we need someone who gets the club etc etc.
I can live with a season of change if I can see the club moving forward.
Thats what angered me about this season with sticking with Wilder.
We knew it was going too be a tough season but we are now stuck with his crap signings so when we do get rid its going to probably take more than 1 season for someone else to turn us around.

This is the type of manager, who needs to just come in and focus on the team and tactics, with a support network around him that can aid more than is currently happening with the other areas of the business.

Its a huge change in club structure and responsiblity and we would have ensure they have the tools to succeed.

Who's in charge of that?

If Wilder, why is no one with a football brain at the club saying 'you know what Chris maybe we don't want 6 of the same midfielder', or 'Chris you know it might actually be worth not signing that player who's not completed a full 90 for 3 seasons', or 'Chris I think we might need a bit of creativity in this team?', or 'Chris I think we might need to sign a right back at right back rather than a shit central midfielder who can barely masquerade as one there', or my personal favourite 'Chris do you think we should try and sign some players with pace and athleticism?'

If we here isn't anyone advising him, it's about time there was. Not just Bettis, Hoyland and their jobs for the boys club.
If there IS someone advising him and this is the squad we've got to show for it, they need sacking immediately.

Wouldn't mind if literally every fan bar the Wilder blind spot club saw it coming a mile off.

We have one maverick at the club and if he gets marked out of games like yesterday that's the type of performance we are going to put in.
In any business or organisation you need what is called a critical friend. Someone to challenge you to make you analyse and question your rationale. I am concerned here that 1 Alan Knill is no longer here to challenge Wilder or question his judgement and 2 after Rosens YouTube moment he’s not going to challenge him either and 3 ! Bettis don’t even go there . Wilder has become solely responsible for tactics , recruitment ( old school Harry Redknapp play) were bang in trouble .

On one hand, I worry that this squad is so very limited in its style of play that more and more teams will figure us out as the games go by.

On the other hand, even by the manager’s own admission, we have no identity or pattern of play… so perhaps they won’t.

What I am certain of though, is that this transfer window has been shambolic. We all knew that we needed to cut out cloth accordingly, but we could have taken a very different approach. With the exception of Dononvan, there is no creativity, pace, athleticism or entertainment.

My guess is that we didn’t go down this route, not just because of limited funds but because our recruitment team isn’t able or active enough to identify upcoming or available talent (never mind players from outside of the UK).

Brookes left on day one, we’ve known for a while Gus wanted to go, and probably knew about COH too… so none of this should have been a surprise.

The frustration is building across a number of threads and amongst the fan base, and it isn’t just because of one game.

Another new thread repeating the same stuff that’s been recycled hundred of times in the Wilder megathread. Stick in there if you must 🤨

Why should it need to be subtle? Wilder is not going to be here in 3 years. He might not be here in 3 months at this rate. We have had years to sort this but failed. Abdullah has to take a lot of the blame as does Bettis who said at the forum last year they didn't need a DOF. He talked about him and Shieber, Hoyland, Allen. Sadly I think he is protecting his own job. Maybe I am wrong but we are run like no other club as Roygbiv said above. Its like a Sunday league set up.

Him and Shieber know little about football recruitment. Bettis has admitted he's just an accountant. Yet despite this admission has ever addressed it or advised Abdullah or Rosen etc to change this vital infrastructure and get a/some football people in above the manager.

Gulp, even them across the city did that as soon as the new owners came in.

If Hoyland/Allen are quite involved in identifying targets then their success rate is frankly appalling and the board should have moved them on.

They have identified old, slow, unfit players who have no resell value and have not improved us. Worryingly I think Wilder is the one who is earmarked the signings as most are players been here before, thus not being scouted (maybe they should have watched Rothwell, Choudhury etc for previous clubs and realised they were not close to players of 2 years ago in form/fitness).

I just fail to see how they have not brought in a technical football side/people who can oversee recruitment. If Wilder goes, who then identifies the targets? If its the people (assume Hoyland/Allen) that identified Chong Matos, McGuiness etc, then we really are in trouble.

The fact they have not done this says a lot about their (including Abdullah before) naivety and lack of awareness how this business works. Rosen admitted they dont know about a lot of the nuances and how football worked. So bring people in who do! No guarantee any DoF or technical football advisor/s will work of course. You have to get the right ones but we have to try and move away from being run like a Sunday league pub side.

Maybe they wait till Wilder does go but unless they are afraid of upsetting him - but got rid of Knill? Seems like they are frightened over what happened with Selles and their experience with Bord - so just went back to what the club did before with one man running it all with all the power to do what he wants.

We really need a new modern progressive coach, a new scouting team and football people above them to see us move into 2026, not like we are still operating in the 80s with a manager, a couple of his pals finding players and a CEO that is almost like a club secretary overseeing a junior club - doing the raffle, overseeing tickets/merchandise and helping with the 1st team too!
It is a lovely vision but it will take a minimum of three years and there is a possibility that mistakes will be made along the way.
Prepare for organised chaos, but that is not a good reason for not trying a complete rebuild.

Why do certain people always come up with this argument whenever someone suggests that someone isn't right for a given job?
I have always felt that in any walk of life if someone criticises the organisation they should put forward constructive proposals for improvement.
If that cannot be be done then it’s of little point in just complaining.

Good ! Some sensible and constructive criticism with proposals.

Ok, here’s a constructive proposal. The owners could hire an experienced and respected football person on a consultancy basis to assist them to define the required criteria for a new manager and then lead a recruitment process.

I have to disagree.
People can be critical of any organisations failings without having to provide a solution .

We tend only to use the " whats your solution / replacement " in football .

Surely if you think some is wrong in an organisation you must have some idea what might put it right.
Constructive criticism is always useful to any set up.
Perhaps we are wandering off the thread. Sorry.

Because it's a very valid point. No it's not the supporter suggesting a change of manager that's in charge of finding a replacement, but they don't have a clue who to go to. Our owners won't either. They haven't a clue. Change manager and we go down. We're in a bad place, totally over reliant on Wilder but he is our only chance.
Why is he?

Do you currently see us staying up playing as we are?

No worries about thread wandering .

Lets say a police commissioner isnt fit for purpose and needs to resign , I wouldnt have the foggiest idea who should replace them

Or EVRI deliver things to the wrong address, its wrong but ive no clue as to their system or how to rectify it

The " who would you replace with " in football is just a lazy argument.

Not a pop at you , just explaining my thoughts.

A proper managerial recruitment process would be a start. Like any organisation apart from us seemibgly do.

So, rightly ignoring the “we tried it before and it didn’t work so we can never try it again”, the “only Wilder gets us” and “name someone” squads, none of whose views survive a moment’s scrutiny, there seems to be a bit of consensus developing around this. Let’s hope someone close to the owners reads it.

So saying that the current head coach is devoid of ideas and someone else giving things a fresh look might result in better performances isn't enough, you want people to name names?

The tried it before and it didnt work brigade...

The owners absolutely half arsed it and irrespective of his shortcomings he had no backing whatsoever from the owners or the majority of the fanbase.

I suppose my view is that if you haven’t a possible solution then you don’t criticise. I fully accept that is not a view that the majority take.
It is so frustrating when either at work or when volunteering someone says you are doing it wrong, without being able to explain why nor to offer a solution.

Not at all. You say the coach is devoid of ideas and suggest we have a some else in to give it a fresh look. That is what I prefer to see, not just complaining in isolation.

I take your point, what we don't is what goes on behind the scenes between manager/coaches/recruitment/owners
I think Wilder is dealing with a lot of stuff that we don't know about and trying to make a fist of it
I'd argue he's making a fisting of it and we're the ones with sore arses🫣
