Who knows what it can possibly mean? I'll have another go.

Should Reed have retained possession or aimed for Woolford? On balance, kept possession - but you have to mix it up.

The pass I'm thinking of came after loud discontent from some of the crowd: this might mean he went forrads too quickly and, as happens, they got the ball. You'd have to ask him why he tried that pass.

We should keep the ball. Not aimless and purposeless possession for its own sake - but if the alternative is a low percentage speculative punt up the field or a random 40-60, 30-70 knock on, then turn around pass sideways, pass backwards, keep the ball. It's easier to score when you've got the ball. And that's not the half of it.

Btw ad hominem - commonly illustrated with a football analogy: playing the man not the ball.
So you agree with me then. Reed made the wrong decision. It actually happened twice and the Kop never moaned at him before his decision they moaned about him playing it long to Woolford when the space was opened twice for him by intelligent runs from our players and he had 20 to 40 yards of space to make a run direct down the centre. Just as in the 2nd half after we scored he got the ball just inside their half and Che? made the space for him, He ran straight and had a shot.
You make out that loads of fans moan about gerit forud. just because you hear 1 or 2, i suggest you look round next time and actually notice the size of the crowd round you and give some respect that are not vocal. 1 in 20 or 1 in 40 shout gerit forud? your lack of recognition for your fellow supporters says loads.
I need no definition of your last statement because as I pointed out last time you were the one playing the man with your boo or Boo.

For that one goal, I'll raise you at least two occasions where we took a short free kick in PV's half that ended up being passed sideways or backwards soon to end up being passed by our CH's to Long (whilst being pressurised by opponents) within 5 seconds.

I'm sorry, to me that isn't possession football, that is crap football, and it happened far too often. Adkins went ballistic at them and rightly so. Our best spell came when we were direct and positive, balls in behind the opposition back line or bypassing their midfield.

Disagree ;)

We need to keep the ball and work an opening.

Sometimes there isn't an opening so we should turn around and pass it sideways  or even backwards  and have another go.

It's 21st century football. And comes with all sorts of positive side effects.

Another example here: Keep the ball, swap sides work it up the pitch.

Doesn't end in a chance but it illustrates what should happen if you do play sideways , or even backwards .

Valid points as I understand the principle you are getting at, however a free kick is a very easy opportunity to create an opening. Set pieces are a great opportunity to create an attempt on goal (see readings 2 goals vs WBA for example) and we could have actually used them for this rather than wasting them as we did.

Our passing yesterday was poor, simple as that for me. We were, for the most part, never going to stretch the opposition as the passing took place between our back 5 all in front of PV'S 11 players. All this talk about 21st century football often overcomplicates what is a simple game - keep it out one end and put it in the other.

For me when it works well it's great to watch - and more to the point it's very effective. The opposition tire mentally and physically and of course if you've got the ball they can't score.

So far this season it's often been poor - and we do end up lumping it forwards. I don't think that happened as much yesterday as it has previously.

What gets my goat is when we stroke the ball around and it takes ages to get from player to player.

We should be passing it with speed and purpose, pulling the opposition about, keeping them on their toes, and increasing the chance they'll lose their balance.

Agree entirely. We should move it quicker and we would assisted in this by playing it wider across the pitch and getting our wingers/wingbacks involved (thereby stretching the opponents more). The lack of movement is frustrating this, as is the obvious lack of tempo - it is noticeable how much sharper the opposition always seem to pass it around the surface.

Our best period of the gan yesterday involved passes forward to Adams or Sharp who laid it off/spun in behind, with runners supporting them / running off them. It was only a brief spell, but it was a glimpse at how the style of play can work. I thought Adams played well, and seemed to have a nice understanding with Sharp (after Adams' botched 1 on 1 when he could hav squared it).
