It's also easier to score when you play the ball into the forward who has found space rather than ignore him as we did on three occasions in the first half when Adams and Sharp twice could have been one one and were screaming for it.

It's not the style it's the mentality that need changing, far far too conservative.

From memory:

We "faff around with it" left side of defence
tippy tappy tippy tappy
McEveley passes it sideways - or was it backwards
Bloke two rows behind shouts, "Come on McEveley."
Pass
Pass
Cross
Shot
Goal

It's much easier to score when we've got the ball.

Key bit is the 'forwards, forwards' bit.

Much easier to score when we go forwards.

:)

It was the sentiment in the, "Come on McEveley!" I was getting at.

It's much easier to pass it forwards if

1) we've got the ball
2) they've been drawn out
3) they're fed up chasing shadows

The key bit is having the ball in the first place. You can't score without it. Control it, work an opening.

Keep the ball. Not aimlessly, or for the sake of it, but playing like that we do need to keep it.

4) if there is a forward pass available due to movement in the middle. The full backs often get pelters for making the right decision... their often only other option is to smash it forward.

At the beginning of the 2nd half we played with more tempo, looked to go forward, scored a great goal and looked a far better team. It would have been nice to do that more.

Unfortunately there was still far too much slow sideways and backwards passing for much of the game - and we ended up hanging on at the end.

Great to win though and the pigs losing made it even sweeter.

Yes.

Towards the end Edgar had no option available and just passed it out of play to regroup.

I thought that was really good football. He could have turned inside or gone back but in that situation those looked dangerous. He kept it simple, having earlier played out of similar positions.

You'll be so pissed of with Reed then when in the first half he passed two out of play wide through the air to Woolford whilst the space opened through the centre through our players creating good movement and he failed to exploit this. Whilst in the second half in exactly the same situation after we had scored he went through and had a shot. Do not give me some bull about young lad and still learning. He plays everyday and has far more experience than 99% of the crowd who may be any age.
in both those first half situations he was too eager to get rid. I suppose it was the Fans pressure that made him play long instead of running in to the 2o meters of space created for him.

Can't make sense of this.

The was still a moment of sublime faff. McEveley took about six months to decide he's not taking a free kick and that Long should take it. Long trudged up, realised McEveley was still in acres and rolled it to him. McEveley was now barely conscious, so taken aback by the round object at his feet, first-timed it back to Long. Long was closed down by an opponent and punted the ball randomly upfield where Vale took comfortable possession.

I hope McCabe was busy counting his losses whilst watching that.

and we score so many this way it's hard to keep count....

one swallow doesn't make a summer, I arrived after 20 mins today and after the game my mate said to me, "well i've seen worse". Pretty much sums up the game. It wasn't a game to get excited about and but for a 10 min spell before and after the goal, there wasn't much excitement, particularly in the half of the first half that i saw.

Credit to players such as Reed, Flynn, Basham, Che and Billy, they all looked better. Credit to Cuvelier coming back, i am sure he was really glad to get back on the pitch. Even Woolford wasn't awful. So in relative terms its a good result.

Crowd were excellent and didn't get at the precious little players. Biggest bonus though was that we played as a team. Not really too sure that we played the "back 3" that Adkins mentioned, it was kind of a lopsided back four with Brayford pushing on a bit more.

Soon to be me no doubt. Dissent will not be tolerated.

I fear dissent. You must be on message.

Fwiw (like you care) it's when it's pointless, personal, non-constructive etc.

A bit like this really.

I have asked a couple of times recently for some constructive comment from your good self, and afaics got nothing in return. Happy if you can show me where I'm wrong in that.

Some people like the trading insults aspect of the forum. It's not for me.

It's General Blades Chat. That's what I signed up for.

It is more easy to understand than your OP so you decide to ignore the point and say you cannot understand. I'll make it simpler for you. Tell me about those three situations with Reed.

More ad hominem. And an order. Tell me. Tell me.

Anyway. Thanks for making it easier for A Bear of Very Little Brain.

The one I recall is Reed being central first half and floating a pass, aimed in the general direction of Woolford, out into touch.

I may have remarked at the time how the desire to get the ball forrads quickly meant the opposition ended up with possession - though this seems to be the preferred MO for an opinionated section of the fan base - and one prominent pundit :).

Furthermore I may have remarked that If we can ignore the boos - or should that be Ignore the Boos? - and keep the ball then we might stand a chance this game.

Came after the one period of loud discontent.

I don't think I'm being overly insulting. I do however have scant patience for those who seem to have an 'angle'. This leads to things being twisted and moulded to fit somebody's outlook rather than an objective analysis.

The same goes for the relentless doom-mongers on here too. So don't think it's personal.

Anyway, I'm happy to discuss any subject at hand if it's a genuine exchange of viewpoints.

see, cannot answer a straightforward question without trying to riddle wriggle or whatever your cartoon is intended to be.Further you know nothing of my thoughts apart from what I have replied on this thread so your opening three words contradict your self in your reply. Actually your cartoon might be right, your full of Poo.

Who knows what it can possibly mean? I'll have another go.

Should Reed have retained possession or aimed for Woolford? On balance, kept possession - but you have to mix it up.

The pass I'm thinking of came after loud discontent from some of the crowd: this might mean he went forrads too quickly and, as happens, they got the ball. You'd have to ask him why he tried that pass.

We should keep the ball. Not aimless and purposeless possession for its own sake - but if the alternative is a low percentage speculative punt up the field or a random 40-60, 30-70 knock on, then turn around pass sideways, pass backwards, keep the ball. It's easier to score when you've got the ball. And that's not the half of it.

Btw ad hominem - commonly illustrated with a football analogy: playing the man not the ball.
