as there ever been a game at the lane when there was more away fans then home

I remember it...was pissing down. We still mathematically weren't down, but needed to win 9-0 or summat to be in with a chance.
Ian Benjamin scored (a penalty I think) and there was a pitch invasion. Me and my mates ran onto the pitch from the kop, and then took up seats on the South stand :)

Don't recall any Brum on Shoreham street, or that they brought a particularly big following.
Sorry it was 1975-76. We was already relegated with nothing to play for, a real shit season. Brum brought thousands, they were everywhere. There was a lot of fighting on the kop during the game, with brum fans occupying some of the kop. Found the table on wiki. We was 11 points adrift, when a win was only worth 2 points.

"Sheffield United's terrible season saw them relegated in bottom place after five years back in the First Division. They went down with Burnley and Wolves"

I was also on the kop that day, wendy fans were on the kop to the side, and Blades fans below them and at both sides trying to get at them. As you put, several times they were rushed and the coppers kept the blades fans back. To say the pigs had a quarter is utter nonsense. They quickly disappeared after the game.To say they had a quarter is utter nonsense.
Yeah just like they claim we only had a few in their north stand for the Bobby Davidson game

I stick by what I saw at that game. It was a long time ago, but I do remember some games better than others. Also watched the highlights on YTV, when they panned the kop it was clear to see the segregation by the police. Maybe it is lurking on youtube somewhere.
As my previous thread, the most away fans I have seen on the kop was Brum. Those days was pay at the turnstile, leeds "took" the kop season 1975-76, they got in very early before the game started and stayed put.

Except it wasn't really a small amount. I was on the kop and they had at least a quarter of it, there was a big line of coppers from the back of the kop right down to the front trying to keep everyone apart
Errr... no they didn't. They had a small pocket on the top right hand side of the kop looking at it from the pitch.

I know because I was one of the dick heads that managed to get through to them and traded blows by going a bit further down the kop and back up.

Thankfully I have now grown up and feel a bit embarrassed about some of the things I used to get up to. Just as the young idiots who follow our club today will, hopefully sooner rather than later.

There used to be a walk way which was half way down the kop and ran all the way across the kop (left to right), the pig fans were above that, and as you said to the right and contained in a "block".

I was at the game but I thought they had more like 7000
They won 1-0 and that got them promoted
They were very well behaved and didn't set a foot on the pitch
At the end I couldn't help thinking that if it had been United going up at the Baseball Ground all manner of carnage would have broken out
It was an FA cup tie derby won 1-0 ,they were in the 3rd division at the time (Arthur Cox was manager) and got promotion that season. It was touch and go whether they had more fans at the match than us.We were at a low ebb playing in the 2nd division,Derby were on the up and we were well beaten on the day.We have had a lot of ups and downs since then, thankfully we are on the up now.

Not a quarter, but I recall up to the first white railing running from up and down the Kop, massed top right side above the 'trench', quite a big mob of them, remember some pig fan burning a flag if I'm not wrong, I was sat looking at the twats close up from the bottom of the 'New' South Stand. Can't remember any agro but I was only 7....

Exactly right - I was caught up in the melee above the kop trench and against the white railings. After a few scuffles we ended up below the trench and the pigs above it. No way did they have a 1/4 of the kop that afternoon.

pigs might argue easter 1980 i was there but i dont think there was more , i remember burnley in cup most away fans ive ever seen at lane no idea how many they brought or the attendence silent?
Wasnt at the Blades v Wendy match in Easter 1980 as I was playing in a football tournament at Kortrijk, Belgium

L**ds fans were everywhere in the ground when we lost 2-0 at home in Easter Tuesday 1974. After the match L**ds had two games left to play and clinched the title in their last match

Home to Birmingham City, I think it was 1977 our last home game, night match. We had already been confirmed as relegated, we had nothing to play for, Birmingham needed to win to stay up, and wolves lost at home to Liverpool the same night which sent them down with us, and Liverpool won the Division one title again.
I think the attendance was 28k, I would estimate half of them were from brum, loads of em on our kop that night, but not in the middle. Drew 1:1.
Anyone else remember that game?
I remember it Neusch'...I was stood at the back of the Kop in the middle..Can't remember any of their fans around us,but maybe further down the Kop...Remember the pitch invasion at the end,and Brum fans also spilled onto the pitch from the Lane terrace in the corner on John Street side.
The following season I remember Forest bringing a large following under Clough...Don't think they outnumbered us,but it did seem a big numbers...We won 2-0,but that was the season they went up,and trouble after the game.

Aah memories, I think it was after that game 2 blades kept knocking little piggies back down the steps in the daisy? ?

None of the Pigs I know - and grew up with - ever claimed they were that many there until some non entity claimed it about ten years ago. Now many of them stroke their chins and nod sagely.
Banno tramp on BM repeats it regularly despite being 6 at the time.

Was that the game Eddie and Roger Hind kicked 7 bells out of each other?
I remember a night game v Brum around that time when it was mental on the kop.
About as bad as it was at St Andrews when we took about 10k for the 0-0 game. Got choked half to death that night with my throat against a stanchion after a surge when it kicked off.

Was at that game , just in front of them , the other side of the trench , they couldn't be got at from the side , because of the white fence , and the afore mentioned trench from the front , a lot of scrapping after the game as the coppers had to let us out at the same time and we could rush em from top and bottom .
A couple of hundred max , a quarter of the Kop not a chance .

The match we had to win 9-0 was against Leicester,1978/79 season, we drew 2-2 Ian Benjamin scored both our goals.

There were a few of us who went straight from school on the bus for this one, when we got to the Lane (Looking like Bay City Rollers) the dirties were already there queuing to get onto the kop to "Take it" as was the term back in the day.
We were wearing our silk Blades scarves around our wrists, and it appeared (to us) that we were the only Blades there at the time.
We quickly found and stood next to the biggest copper we could find. He suggested that we go onto the John Street stand as soon as the turnstiles open. We took him up on the advice, and watched the situation evolve, and by god did it ever, it continued outside the ground after, to a degree too after the final whistle.

I was thinking about the Burnley cup game in January 1993 earlier. They had both tiers of the Lane end plus the section of the South Stand nearest the Kop (Why that end?) It's the only time I've ever known that happen.
From memory I think they were credited with about 9,000 and the crowd was given as 22-23,000 but I remember thinking it seemed a lot fuller than that and a dodgy turnstile operator must have let another 4/5k in as it was heaving. At a time when the fa cup drew good crowds.

I think we did it for the Pigs around the same time if memory serves me right

The other two times I remember us doing it was Newcastle at home in 1993-1994 - think it was quoted as being 10,000 newcastle fans that day, they had Bramall Lane end and the section of South Stand. Then Man United at home the same season, night match in December when we lost 3-0, they also had the same section of South Stand next to the Kop.

Pigs never had that section of the South stand in the 90's.

Remember playing Man U in the cup in that memorable 2 - 1 Blades victory. I was in my usual standing place in the Old John Street terrace. Giggs scored after about 20 minutes at the Kop end. I remember bracing myself for the delayed silence and then the roar from the Bramall Lane end - the lag in time for the opposition fans to realize they had scored and the time it takes for the speed of sound to travel across the pitch. Well this is the only game I have been to when this phenomena didn't happen! The roar was immediate as every bugger around me started jumping about and cheering. It was like being in the away end!

If they didn't have it officially then they had a load of fans in colours sat in that part of the stand in the early 90s. My piggy mate was in there at the time and I remember looking across from the West Terrace.

Absolutely right

Hence the song....You took the Kop at 5oclock ..

Surely someone must have done it in the early stages of a cup game and demand for the home ends was about as popular as sticking your tail in Susan Boyle's tuppy.
