Taking a step back, over the past twenty years we seem to have had our ups and downs more than most, and been in the headlines for a variety of reasons.

Looking at the timeline with a rough summary (please correct or add anything):

---

2002: Battle of Bramall Lane: We have several players sent off and injured so have to forfeit the game for the first time in English footballing history

2003: Triple Assault season: Reached two semi-finals and lose in the play-offs

2006: Promoted to the Premier League

2007: Relegated from the Premier League on the last day of the season with a dramatic devastating loss on the final day to Wigan. Carlos Tevez transfer saga commences.

2007-8: Warnock departs, Robson comes in who is sacked several months later and replaced by Blackwell. Transfer fee broken for James Beattie at £4 million who scores 22 goals. Defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup courtesy of 'balloongate'. Just missed out on play-offs despite fine form end of season.

2008-9: Beattie is sold to Stoke in January having contracted 'flu'. Missed out narrowly on automatic promotion (Kevin Phillips 90th minute strike on the opening day of the season for Birmingham against us being ever so costly) and lost in the play-off final to Burnley with Jamie Ward being sent off as a substitute. Naughton and Walker dramatically under-sold to Spurs as a consequence. SUFC receive £20 million compensation from West Ham in out of court settlement to end Carlos Tevez affair.

2010-11: Blackwell sacked after just two league games. Speed promoted to manager but leaves after a few months for Wales. Carver takes over for the Christmas period as part of the interview process, but Micky Adams preferred and appointed in January. Britton and Bartley leave replaced by Collins and Doyle. Relegation follows, Adams sacked. Reached the FA Youth Cup Final in front of a record 30,000 fans at Bramall lane.

2011-12: Wednesday favourite Danny Wilson brought in to mass protests. In November 2011 former manager and player Gary Speed tragically died in suspected suicide (RIP). SUFC featured in channel 4 documentary showing dodgy dealers attempting to buy our club. On course for automatic promotion until 1-0 loss to MK Dons and collapse following Ched Evans' rape conviction. Defeated in play off final to Huddersfield on penalties, despite them missing several first.

2012-13: Wilson sacked whilst we were in the hunt for automatic promotion following poor run of form. Replaced by club legend Chris Morgan, and then we go on to lose in the play-offs to Yeovil.

2013-14: David Weir given first professional job following retirement from Everton. Build the team around Kevin McDonald, who is then sold suddenly to Wolves due to a little known clause in his contract. Put in worst run in history and sacked after only three months. Replaced by Nigel Clough who put in a club record for straight wins and reaches the semi-final in the FA Cup with a thrilling 5-3 defeat to Hull ending the run. Prince Abdullah buys 50% stake in club for £1 and becomes co-owner with Kevin McCabe promising new investment.

2014-15: Defeated Premier League Southampton and took a modicum of revenge in a penalty shoot out win against West Ham at Upton Park (with Doyle mocking the home support) to make the League Cup semi final where Che Adams stars in our narrow loss to Spurs. Ched Evans released from prison. We offer him the chance to train, but following mass outrage from the media, political establishment (including the Prime Minister) and resignations from club patrons Jess Ennis and Charlie Webster we u-turn and retract that offer in humiliation. Lose in the play-offs following a ridiculous 5-5 draw with Swindon. Clough subsequently sacked.

2016-17: Adkins sacked after failing to make the play offs, with local lad Billy Sharp's resigning being the only highlight. Hammond paid off to leave in what has to be one of the worst transfers in the clubs history. Boyhood fan Chris Wilder is brought in, who almost immediately releases every single player out of contract and transfer lists Coutts and Freeman. Started dreadfully as we were at the foot of league one after several games, but recovered in spectacular style to win the league with 100 points. Meanwhile Ched Evans is cleared of rape in a re-trial.

2017-18: Ched Evans re-signs for the club, and conspiracy theories reign supreme. Leon Clarke is our star striker though, scoring 21 goals shocking the championship. We were on course for the play-offs or even higher until Coutts got his leg broken thanks to a shocking tackle by Sordell at Burton. The two co-owners fall out, starting the beginning of lengthy legal proceedings. Famously defeat Wednesday 4-2 at Hillborough in 'bouncing day'. Former academy Blade Harry Maguire stars for England at World Cup with Kyle Walker.

2018-19: David Brooks sold for a club record £12 million. Receive £5 million from sell on clause from Walker moving to Manchester City for £50 million. Gain promotion pipping rivals Leeds to the Premier League with revolutionary 'roaming centre backs' tactic which receives national acclaim. Wilder wins LMA manager of the year, ahead of Klopp and Guardiola.

2019: Record transfer fees broken several times. Prince Abdullah wins his legal battle to take full control of the club. Comments about Bin Laden family make national headlines. We start promisingly in the PL...

Some additions:

2009: In September goalkeeper Paddy Kenny is given 9 month ban for taking cough medicine over the counter containing banned substance.

2011-12: Reserve Connor Brown sacked by SUFC for posting derogatory remarks about the woman in question in the Ched Evans' case following his conviction.

2018-19: Defeated at home by non-league Barnet is humiliating fashion on the same day Blades Ladies Sophie Jones is cited for alleged racist comments to an opposition player.

2019-2020: Ched Evans finally leaves the club permanently to Fleetwood, thus finally ending a 10 year saga. Club signs record sponsorship deal. Ravel Morrison, a former wonderkid is brought in to much attention.

What about:-
Promoted from Pub league with a record number of points.
Promoted from Championship to Premiership
Manager voted Manager of the year by his peers.
But then again that's actually praising the Club

Portsmouth, Coventry, Wimbledon would all argue that they have had a more eventful past 20 years.

I'd probably say that Leicester have had a proper roller coaster.

We'll be up there as having an eventful last 20 years, but many of the events mentioned are normal for football clubs - new owners, new grounds, new managers, selling players, play off defeats, promotions. Many teams have done all of these over the past 20 years.

Spare a thought for Wednesday and Leeds with just League 1 promotion to get them excited and a couple of play off forays. They've not even had cup runs.

I was hoping you’d left The Ched Evans stuff out to completely wrong foot us...

God you either spend all day on Google or have fantastic memory's, I remember them things but not in that detail lol. We have to remember though it was through Leicester bending the rules to go into admin, that the points deduction was brought in but they never suffered.

You can go a bit further back too, last day relegation 94, play off final 97, fa cup semi 98, Arsenal 'replay' 99.

A lot of clubs will have similar ups and downs though.

True, though I didn't want to stretch back too far as it looks like stretching a point. 2000 is an arbitrary landmark I know but it means 'in this millennium' effectively.

I'm genuinely not sure that any club has had something similar to us with such frequency. The only exception I can think of is Cardiff City with the tragic Sala (RIP) incident and their owners being stupid in meddling with the kit/crest, and the clubs that have/nearly gone bust like Portsmouth Bury Bolton etc.

It's a matter of perspective which is what I'm trying to get a sense of!

'recovered in spectacular style to win the league with 100 points. '

'Gain promotion pipping rivals Leeds to the Premier League with revolutionary 'roaming centre backs' tactic which receives national acclaim'

'Wilder wins LMA manager of the year, ahead of Klopp and Guardiola.'

Do you know how to read? :)
I've just asked for a refund from the Acme School of Speed Reading.

Rose coloured glasses. 90s include Sam or Samantha, Deano's goal, 80s has the 4th division resurrection, 70s has the 3sided ground and top of the league. It's all part of being grounded enough to be a blade.

I think Leicester have a pretty good claim on this.

If we use 2000 as the starting point:

WIn league cup. New stadium. Relegation. Administration. Promotion. Relegation. New owners. Relegation. Promotion. Gutting playoff defeat. New owners. Harrowing playoff defeat. Promotion. Miracle survival. Racist sex tape. Miracle title win. Champions League QF. Owner dies in helicopter crash.

They have had 16 permanent managers in this time.

A while ago there was an article written about the least and most stressful teams to support in the football leagues, due to events on and off the pitch.

Number 1 was predictably at the time Man Utd. Number 2 was Doncaster Rovers due to their rise up the leagues and trophy win along the way.

At Number 92 came Notts County and we came in at 91.

If we do go down. You can put your house on it being a last day, last minute disputed goal that VAR upholds, that eventually sends us down.........

Yep, looking at it away from a Blades' perspective Leicester, Portsmouth and Manchester City certainly rival if not 'beat' us in being more eventful.

Kevin McCabe had said something like 'no other club is like us, they don't have a Tevez story etc like we do' and of course Kev has his own perspective so it's interesting to see how accurate that statement is.

Still the history shows that nevertheless it's been a dramatic few years, certainly compared to most clubs like Ipswich Leeds etc.

No, Chesterfield are and they have t-shirts with 'we almost loaned David Brooks'.

Wigan Athletic have probably been promoted and relegated more times than anyone over the past 20 years.

Not sure your right about game being abandoned in 2002 against WBA.

I'd throw in Paul Woolhouse for good measure. Defrauded us (allegedly) by stealing ticket money then went on the run.

The Michael Verrips story hasn't ended yet either

No, Chesterfield are and they have t-shirts with 'we almost loaned David Brooks'.
Saw they lost 4-0 to Sutton United on Saturday and are rooted in the national league relegation zone.

3 years ago we were both mid table in league one and early November we went 1 down at their place before getting 4 2nd half goals.

Slightly different tragectories since then...

If we go overseas, I'll cite SC Paderborn, whose last six seasons have been promoted, relegated, relegated, relegated but reprieved as someone else went broke, promoted then promoted. Currently one point from five games with Bayern to come this weekend

I suppose I'd have had to follow all the other clubs as closely I've followed the Blades to give a fair answer. We've probably been one of the less interesting teams on the pitch given we've had two relegations and three promotions in the last twenty years.

In terms of incidents we've been embroiled in, I can't think of many that can challenge us in terms of two drugs offenders, suing another club, a weird replay, abandoning a game vs. WBA and so on.

I think most fans feel the same about their respective clubs, so in that respect nothing unusual with us. However, on a more parochial level, we have certainly had more significant events over the last 20-30 years than our neighbours. As one example, we’ve had multiple cup runs but they haven’t. We may not win the semis but we’ve certainly been in a few.
