Are we the 'most eventful' club in recent history?

One of many reasons for our progress, these players do know about each other.

I guess we must be up there, but other teams edge us out. The things that have happened to us have been more sporadic but more ludicrous than other teams

  • Battle of Bramall Lane (has anybody ever had the game abandoned like that?)
  • Triple Assault season (has anyone ever reached two domestic cup semi finals as a second division team, as well as a playoff final, and lost them all?)
  • Tevez affair (has anyone ever sued the team who stayed up at their expense?)
  • Two of our players banned for failed drugs tests (how many failed drugs tests have there been full stop in football since the turn of the millennium?)

But I actually think we hit peak Sheffield United at the end of the 2011/12 season.

- Our star striker sent to prison on the eve of our most important game of the season, which we go on to lose.

- We are then beaten to automatic promotion by our fierce cross city rivals despite getting 89 points, which would have had us promoted in almost any other season at that level

- After going 2-0 up in the playoff final penalty shootout, the player we bring on after 119 minutes (Andy Taylor), specifically to take a penalty in the shootout, having never taken a penalty in his entire career, obviously misses a crucial penalty

- We go on to lose the shootout 8-7 after the 22nd penalty of the shootout is blazed 39 yards over the bar by Steve Simonsen; a goalkeeper who had been almost single-handedly derailing our promotion bid all season

Luton's journey has been interesting too. Long downward slide before a recent upheaval. Points deductions, paint pot success, knockingPrem teams out the cups when in non-league.

I like Luton, good luck to them.

Thank you for leaving out 2015-16, in the interest of our anger management.

I guess that everything that happened was unseen in that year.
But now we all know what the biggest room in the house is without the aid of a tape Measure.

Not quite the same but, in 2000, Tranmere Rovers got to the League Cup final and the FA Cup quarter final (with The Chief leading their line!) and then got relegated the following year, finishing bottom. Despite going down, they ended up reaching the FA Cup quarter finals in three out of five seasons. Since then, they've never made it past the third round and, for two seasons, didn't even qualify for the cup proper due to being in non-league. They've definitely had a roller coaster ride.

Feel absolutely disgusted that this has to be added to.

Record signing Oli McBurnie charged with drink driving https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50121433
You’re not disgusted. You couldn’t wait for a reason to revive one of your old threads and it’s the first thing you thought about when you saw the article, with a little bit of pre-cum seeping from your Japs eye. It’s what you do.

No it doesn’t. Driving offences are pretty routine amongst footballers.

Not sure about that. Though I admit this probably is confirmation bias that we are an eventful club, of course he deserves the presumption of innocence unless convicted.

These sort of things just seem to keep happening with us!

Rooney, Firmino, Febregas, Lampard, Crouch, Fellani, the Derby 3, Berahino, Lloris, Drinkwater, Gibson...off the the top of my head all been done for speeding/drink driving.

Footballers are generally known for this kind of thing.

Not looking for an argument, it's an interesting point you raise. I accept these are off the top of your head so there are more. In particular I recall the tragic one involving McCormick which caused death.

Though these offences have taken place over the past 10 years. Each squad in the Football League has roughly 25 players. Multiplied by 72 is: 1800.

McBurnie is one of a handful of 1800 footballers in the Football League to be done for drink driving this season.

That's less than 1%.

I'm sorry but we are 'eventful' to the same extent that a lot of other clubs are. There are things happening at lots of clubs (particularly in recent history) that we probably don't register or think are eventful.

I'd say the issues at Portsmouth, Coventry, Notts County, Chesterfield, Bury, Birmingham, Villa to name a few are more profound than ours.

All football fans think that their clubs are 'eventful' and a lot also subscribe to the 'hard done to' line. The fact that we comment and get immersed in these stories means that we amplify the events. Outside of S2 most people probably don't give a shit and probably only know about Tevez and Bin Laden from the last 20 years.

In the same way I couldn't give a flying one about most of the events at the clubs listed above.

The point i'm making though is "footballer caught speeding/drink driving etc" often barely raises an eyebrow. Maybe when they end up in a collision it becomes a different story a la Lee Hughes. Its like politicians who lie to parliament......its wrong but nobody is particularly shocked when it happens. This will barely register with most fans of the game, let alone the general public.

Every club in the Premier League has had a player or players banned from driving at one time or another. It will hardly mark us out.

Taking a step back, over the past twenty years we seem to have had our ups and downs more than most, and been in the headlines for a variety of reasons.

Looking at the timeline with a rough summary (please correct or add anything):

---

2002: Battle of Bramall Lane: We have several players sent off and injured so have to forfeit the game for the first time in English footballing history

2003: Triple Assault season: Reached two semi-finals and lose in the play-offs

2006: Promoted to the Premier League

2007: Relegated from the Premier League on the last day of the season with a dramatic devastating loss on the final day to Wigan. Carlos Tevez transfer saga commences.

2007-8: Warnock departs, Robson comes in who is sacked several months later and replaced by Blackwell. Transfer fee broken for James Beattie at £4 million who scores 22 goals. Defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the FA Cup courtesy of 'balloongate'. Just missed out on play-offs despite fine form end of season.

2008-9: Beattie is sold to Stoke in January having contracted 'flu'. Missed out narrowly on automatic promotion (Kevin Phillips 90th minute strike on the opening day of the season for Birmingham against us being ever so costly) and lost in the play-off final to Burnley with Jamie Ward being sent off as a substitute. Naughton and Walker dramatically under-sold to Spurs as a consequence. SUFC receive £20 million compensation from West Ham in out of court settlement to end Carlos Tevez affair.

2010-11: Blackwell sacked after just two league games. Speed promoted to manager but leaves after a few months for Wales. Carver takes over for the Christmas period as part of the interview process, but Micky Adams preferred and appointed in January. Britton and Bartley leave replaced by Collins and Doyle. Relegation follows, Adams sacked. Reached the FA Youth Cup Final in front of a record 30,000 fans at Bramall lane.

2011-12: Wednesday favourite Danny Wilson brought in to mass protests. In November 2011 former manager and player Gary Speed tragically died in suspected suicide (RIP). SUFC featured in channel 4 documentary showing dodgy dealers attempting to buy our club. On course for automatic promotion until 1-0 loss to MK Dons and collapse following Ched Evans' rape conviction. Defeated in play off final to Huddersfield on penalties, despite them missing several first.

2012-13: Wilson sacked whilst we were in the hunt for automatic promotion following poor run of form. Replaced by club legend Chris Morgan, and then we go on to lose in the play-offs to Yeovil.

2013-14: David Weir given first professional job following retirement from Everton. Build the team around Kevin McDonald, who is then sold suddenly to Wolves due to a little known clause in his contract. Put in worst run in history and sacked after only three months. Replaced by Nigel Clough who put in a club record for straight wins and reaches the semi-final in the FA Cup with a thrilling 5-3 defeat to Hull ending the run. Prince Abdullah buys 50% stake in club for £1 and becomes co-owner with Kevin McCabe promising new investment.

2014-15: Defeated Premier League Southampton and took a modicum of revenge in a penalty shoot out win against West Ham at Upton Park (with Doyle mocking the home support) to make the League Cup semi final where Che Adams stars in our narrow loss to Spurs. Ched Evans released from prison. We offer him the chance to train, but following mass outrage from the media, political establishment (including the Prime Minister) and resignations from club patrons Jess Ennis and Charlie Webster we u-turn and retract that offer in humiliation. Lose in the play-offs following a ridiculous 5-5 draw with Swindon. Clough subsequently sacked.

2016-17: Adkins sacked after failing to make the play offs, with local lad Billy Sharp's resigning being the only highlight. Hammond paid off to leave in what has to be one of the worst transfers in the clubs history. Boyhood fan Chris Wilder is brought in, who almost immediately releases every single player out of contract and transfer lists Coutts and Freeman. Started dreadfully as we were at the foot of league one after several games, but recovered in spectacular style to win the league with 100 points. Meanwhile Ched Evans is cleared of rape in a re-trial.

2017-18: Ched Evans re-signs for the club, and conspiracy theories reign supreme. Leon Clarke is our star striker though, scoring 21 goals shocking the championship. We were on course for the play-offs or even higher until Coutts got his leg broken thanks to a shocking tackle by Sordell at Burton. The two co-owners fall out, starting the beginning of lengthy legal proceedings. Famously defeat Wednesday 4-2 at Hillborough in 'bouncing day'. Former academy Blade Harry Maguire stars for England at World Cup with Kyle Walker.

2018-19: David Brooks sold for a club record £12 million. Receive £5 million from sell on clause from Walker moving to Manchester City for £50 million. Gain promotion pipping rivals Leeds to the Premier League with revolutionary 'roaming centre backs' tactic which receives national acclaim. Wilder wins LMA manager of the year, ahead of Klopp and Guardiola.

2019: Record transfer fees broken several times. Prince Abdullah wins his legal battle to take full control of the club. Comments about Bin Laden family make national headlines. We start promisingly in the PL...

This can't be normal can it?

UTB

Interesting read.

Just how terrible must Carver have been to be overlooked for Ralph Wiggum?

Last minute penalty missed v Walsall sending us to division 4
Last minute goal at Chelsea sends us down
Everton best Wimbledon when 2 nil down, goalkeeper suspected of taking bribes
Last minute goal by Hopkins for Palace loses play off final
So many hard luck stories over the 40 years I have followed us, very few fantastic years
Still hard to believe we have actually made it back to the PL

Using your own maths here, 1% means one in four clubs have had an incident like this. Edit. Realise you said less than one percent. The point is we’re taking about turbulent teams rather than players so it’s out of 72 rather than 1800. Do Rooney’s driving offences make Man U turbulent?

On the verge of making the Champions League for the first time in our history in a sensational season.... then this.

Edit: oh and also the McCabe stunner

The first team in history to be denied a goal WITH goaline technology and VAR :(

(forgot to add this previously)

Wouldn’t have it any other way imagine supporting boring like Ipswich or someone like Sheffield wenesday

Tufty Club are considering doing a “Sheffield United cock ups of our time” podcast, so good synchronicity that this has popped up. When I get a min, I’ll give it all a skim for any I’ve forgotten (though DB no doubt has an exhaustive and heavily-annotated list already)
