Archer's debut

Hecky loves his favourites.

Strange that Archer and Hamer have become 'Heckies favourites' when they have only been in the building for a few days though.

People used to criticise Nick Montgomery because his football wasn't 'pretty' - he got his foot in won a tackle and regained possession though.- Think Trevor Hockey.

Have you noticed a lack of possession against all the teams in the PL so far, Fleck is the nearest we have to the type of player who can win possession back.

Just look at those thigh muscles !!

Now we know why he is able to strike a football so purely and powerfully as demonstrated yesterday.

As an aside , I’ve never been McB’s biggest fan but I greatly admire the enthusiasm and encouragement he shows to other players , as demonstrated above and towards the likes of McAtee and Doyle last season .

What did you think to his shot, just saved by Pickford and his assist for the 2nd goal?
Shot was good, assist was good. Worded it poorly, but he got caught on the ball multiple times in the first half taking an age to decide what to do with it, and was sloppy in possession.

Hamer is one step ahead of the game and always looking to go forward as soon as he gets the ball he's already knows what he's going to try and do with it .

It might not always come off and some fans will get on his back for that but it will benefit us hugely more often than not.

Most of our big chances created will come through Hamer in one way or another.

Prefer that then someone who is too safe on the ball and plays sideways backwards.
Yep.Therewere at least two occassions first half he looked around for the next move forward but no one was gave him an option.
I guess they'll catch up with his speed of thought.

Like any other signing I’ll reserve judgement for now but what was noticeable was the lack of hesitation with both finishes. Reminded me of prime Billy Sharp. We’ve generally had a tendency to over play in attacking areas in recent seasons.

Hamer looked a lot like Mark Duffy when he 1st came into the team. Trying stuff that didn’t always come off but looked great when it did. Sure he’ll keep improving.

Let’s hope he can dignify our #10 shirt in the same way as the fella that vacated it.

Promising start 😃.

Yep, 2 player comparisons l also thought. Big boots to fill.

100 agree with this midfield did not work at all today. Looked like they’d never seen each other. Today showed what Doyle would have added that Norwood sadly can’t
Totally agree. Norwood had decent game but as ever when he plays we lack energy and athleticism in midfield. Turning point for me last season was when Hecky put Doyle in the Norwood role. Shame Doyle has gone. Do we have anyone else who can do that role? Slimane? Souza although he seems ok where he is. Where does McAtee fit in the team? Clearly not the Doyle/Norwood role.

If,as some say on here,, he's piss poor, I hope he's piss poor for the rest of the season scoring 2 goals a game!

People didn't criticise Monty for his style of football. Everyone loved him for his engine and for his man marking. The job he did on Gerrard at Anfield in the cup semi-final was testament to this. The reason people criticised him is because he'd do all the hard work tracking back, putting in a tackle, winning the ball, then mess up a simple pass to a team mate or hoof it up the field to no one. His passing wasn't his strong point and it was frustrating.

Thinking about it, if you could somehow merge Norwood and Monty into one footballer you'd have an amazing midfielder, much like if you merged Baldock and Bogle.

I think the answer to that will have crucial impact on how our season pans out.

Norwood is not the long term answer for me but it seems we are stuck with him.

He slows play down far too much and is not athletic enough to get up and down the pitch.

Stick Souza in there for a bit and see how he gets on?

Lack of hesitation and willingness to carry the ball directly up field and put defences on the back foot.

We will soon coach that out of him don’t you worry

We need to tighten up all over the pitch … Everton will not score an easier goal all season than their equaliser

First one was more of a gift. Plus rebound came off his knee.

In modern football we're lucky to have capabilities to constantly re-watch over and over clips of the full match and take time to analyse every individual, we can even find out how much ground they covered and all the rest. We can easily lose sight of what's been presented to us.

We've got 2 new signings in Archer and Hammer. Out of the 4 goals (out of 5 matches) we've scored so far, 3 of them were from those new signings and both of those signings didn't just scored on their debuts they scored very good goals. Alright Archers second we could potentially say was a bit of luck but he did well to strike the ball as he did and beat Pickford, which he was.

As far as I'm concerned, that's not a bad couple of games for the new lads.
