I just don't understand how we went from a flying wingback in the mould of a Bogle, and changed it to a centre back who can play RB (more like an inexperienced Anel/Baldock)

Have you factored in that 4 new signings / loans might also want paying throughout the course of their contracts/loans Rodley?
 
17 million , still worth it compared to what we got. I believe if we had made the play for him earlier we would of got him for less

In general I agree but "lack of form".....I would say he's been our best defender so far this season.

Do you personally really know that it is it what you've heard on here. I personally believe its a story made up by united to try and stop the fans disappointment at us not wanting to spend the money instead we flittered away what we had on Archer, Slimane, Traore, Trusty & Souza

Yeah the fact he only has two years left on his contract is a big factor here. I like Anel and think he brings something different going forward that very few teams have at this level. I also think the downing tools argument is a bit overplayed given how our entire squad and first team was a shit show last year.

But his form isn’t great and he isn’t going to sign an extension. Earlier on in the window I wanted to keep him but now I’m thinking trading him in for a good price would be a sound move. There are still a couple of holes in the squad we need to fill, either this window or next, and we have three decent RCBs (albeit the other two are on loan). If we get a good price and sell-on, then this makes sense.

If you are looking to get to the next level, at some point we’ll have to drop this on new signings as it is going to put the fear factor up new players.

It all depends on how confident you are in your recruitment.

If you get relegated then he’d be one of those you sell. You just make sure you don’t start removing these clauses for average players.

Yes he might have been overpaid as a Champ player per se but money is money. Add up what we’re paying on Souza, Slimane and Trusty and it probably outstrips what we might be paying Doyle.

I shudder at the comparison, but he could have been our Bannan, in that we’d be happy to make a special case for him simply because he would make a difference.

I agree £17m was a good price for Doyle, but it was academic. We simply didn't have it, as our owner preferred to gamble on either staying up on the cheap or selling up mid season. Obviously, he lost on both counts.

I’d expect every team reaches this point.

Other players would have to accept that for them to get players of a greater quality to work with, then they would have to see them paid more, and in some cases, that would involve certain player not being asked to adhere to such clauses.

Maybe we are not there yet, but it would seem inevitable as you evolve in an upward trajectory.

I’m not so sure teams would reach where they don’t have relegation clauses in contracts.

My guess is probably all teams have them in some form.

What changes would be the likelihood of relegation.

In Doyle’s case Newly promoted team with a high chance of relegation, the clause becomes a barrier. Compared with Wolves as an established PL team it’s less likely to come into fruition therefore less of a barrier?
 
I suspect I am in a minority, given his clear under performance last season, but I will be sad to see Anel leave. He demonstrated less than 18 months ago that when motivated he is one of the best central defenders in the Championship. Indeed he was named in the Championship team of the year, as was Ndiaye - with pretty much every other team name checking him as being a "cheat code". It would be a shame that our inspirational manager couldn't re-motivate him, and that we admit defeat, resulting in the loss of a player who undoubtedly could assist us getting promotion.

Although I also accept the current squad could still do with strengthening in key areas, so I suppose that as with the re-investment of the sale proceeds from Brooks, it could all end well. I hope so!

Bit harsh on Gilchrist and JRS calling them has-beens - they're 20 and 21.

How much younger would you want loans to be? We could ask Chelsea U10s whether they have anyone suitable but their mum & dad would have to give them lifts to training each day
