The signings in our second season were mostly young players with potential for exactly that reason, we signed Berge in the January, and Brewster, Ramsdale, Bogle and Lowe in the summer. What is the argument, regardless? Slater has eventually developed into a decent, midtable Championship player, he'd have been no help in the PL as a teen.
Not sure what the argument is again. We utilised the academy perfectly in his case, we played him as a young player to bolster the squad, developed him into a player that a bigger team would want and sold him for a large fee.
The strategy is develop good players and use them as we see fit, same as any other club. When they're good enough to bolster the squad they play, when we get good offers for them we sell to help reinvest. We didn't drop modern club legends like Fleck and Norwood for Slater because he wasn't good enough, but we did drop Didsy and Sharp for Osula because he was.
Ramsdale was sold for a million to help us get off our arse in LG1, a good fee for a player that had proven nothing at that point. We bought him back later when we needed a keeper and sold him for a big profit again. All good business.
Hecky didn't take to Slimane either, or more likely both recognised that he wasn't good enough to play in the PL. Both gave him minutes regardless given our lack of options. Wes was brought in for free as backup for Ramsdale wasn't he? When Ramsdale left he became no.1 without being outstanding so was given competition. Hardly a misused talent, we got the most out of an average, aging keeper.
We clearly make poor decisions as a club from time to time, as does Wilder as a manager. Perhaps having a DoF would help, but we aren't underperforming massively relative to our natural level and have achieved more than most recently with our "outdated" model.
Curtis was awful in league 1 a few years ago and had a decent 6 month loan in league 2 last season. Wilder will have watched his games, seen him back in training and decided that he's still not up to it. We signed him because he was a young player with potential that might have become good enough. He still might. Why did Brighton sign Tommy Watson for £10mill, loan him out to the Championship last season and now to Leicester in LG1?
We did see where Baptiste was at, he was playing every week at relegated Rotherham in LG1. Before loaning him out, Wilder will have seen him in training. I also want to see young players given a chance now, particularly given our financial situation, but it's no good playing kids that aren't even close to being ready; it's not fair on them and would be a disaster for us.
My point is that while we got good money for Osula and Ramsdale, money has not been invested wisely for years. We have bought overtime Big money for players with little return. Brewster over £20M Berge £23M, Cannon £10M, Gus, O'Hare, Cooper are about the 3 players who were good value.
Now we are in the position of free transfers and loans. If Baptise Marsh and Curtis are not up to playing in the championsip then why are they here.
Peck and Arblaster played because we didnt have anyone else and they both showed they are good enough at this level. So why not try some of the others instead of bringing in players like Clarke, Shackleton, Rothwell, Doherty, Mee, Ogbene, McGuinness, Barry. Matsos, Summare,. Burke, Callum Robinson, Ings.
The problem from our first promotion to PL with Wilder is that we were dependent on older players. Stevens, Baldock, Basham Norwood, Fleck Didsy, Sharp. What was supposed to strengthen the team and replace those players hasnt happened.
When Ramsdale was sold the second time. We got Olsen who was very poor, We then tried Verrips who was hopeless.
Wes then got a go and did well. We then get Grbic, rubbish and then got it right. Last season we played Cooper when he was injured making the injury worse. Leaving us with Davies.
Regarding Curtis. Peterborough were a shambles with Ferguson going into melt down. He had a very young defence with no experienced players with them. He spent the first half of the season, continually swapping players in and out.
Curtis may ultimately be not good enough but I would prefer to find that out by looking at him getting some game time playing for us this season, rather than another year on loan and having to look at Doherty.
