Alleged Racist Chanting - BBC Radio Sheffield

Why are people still talking about 'alleged' and 'if it happened'? I was on the halfway line and heard it loud and clear from top corner of the Kop.

It hasn't been clearly established what was said.

It hasn't been clearly established that it was racist.

Either of those could earn an 'allegedly'.

Sheffield United is currently investigating reports of inappropriate behaviour by a small minority of supporters during Monday's Sky Bet League One encounter with Bradford City.

The Club has received complaints about both sets of fans from the fixture - including a number of contradictory reports.

The Blades will take every step to track down and deal with those responsible for any inappropriate actions, which ruin the matchday experience for other supporters.

Sheffield United is an inclusive family and community orientated Club where everyone is made to feel welcome and it endeavours to improve on this principle year on year.

The Club's official website carries a Customer Charter and an Equality Statement which emphasises its commitment to eliminate discrimination.

Where I sit in the JSS just the Lane end side of the halfway line, I and my friends definitely heard "Town full of Pakis".

Hope they can track down the culprits.

Absolutely not the case. We are in JSS kop end. There were 2 very brief chants.....'town full of ISIS'....then 'stand up if you hate ISIS'.. Stupid but not racist.

Sheffield United have launched an investigation into allegations of “inappropriate behaviour” by a small section of fans during Monday’s win against Bradford at Bramall Lane.

Bradford’s travelling fans reported racist chanting from a small minority of United supporters, while the home striker Billy Sharp claimed he had coins thrown at him from the away end.

“The club has received complaints about both sets of fans from the fixture – including a number of contradictory reports,” read a club statement. “The Blades will take every step to track down and deal with those responsible for any inappropriate actions, which ruin the matchday experience for other supporters.

“Sheffield United is an inclusive family and community orientated club where everyone is made to feel welcome and it endeavours to improve on this principle year on year.”

United have taken steps to identify any offenders in response to comments made by the Bradford chairman, Mark Lawn, after the match. He told the Telegraph & Argus: “I thought we had gone beyond that stage in football. I’d hoped stuff like that and monkey chants were a thing of the past.

“I feel very sorry for the Sheffield United board because they must be embarrassed by the morons who do that. Unfortunately it’s difficult to stop something like that. We’d look on cameras and if we could prove they are doing it, then ban them from the ground.”

Sharp later made light of the alleged coin-throwing incident when he said on Twitter: “Cheers Bradford for the coins.”

News on ITV, BBC, Guardian, Telegraph, Talksport, Eurosport, etc, etc.

If any journalists read this, it would be nice to point out the vast majority of us utterly deplore this! (We can live in hope!).

wer'e in G block south stand, bloke who lodged complaint also in south stand, star reports a couple of hundred in G&H were singing town full of isis? well i didnt hear owt from this section and only about ten seconds worth from kop which was quickly shouted down but i'm sat a bit closer to the kop and my ear's are bigger than your's ;)

The BCFC board don't like us do they? Their fat controller has had several digs over the years and now the chairman. Presumably because they rarely beat us. No condemnation of their fans throwing coins at Billy I see.

And an insight into how the media works.

Something many of us who were present at the game either didn't hear (me - to be clear this doesn't mean that it didn't happen: just that it's been exploded out of all proportion, and beyond even that), or can't agree on, and definitely can't agree on intent, and the name of the club is dragged through the mud in the national media.

I'm on South Stand F block and heard one short quiet chant from the Kop that stopped about as soon as it started. Cos of the "tune" and who we were playing I just assumed the last word was the P word. It certainly wasn't clear enough to say for definite.

However I was shocked to see The Star saying it was 100s on the South Stand. I heard nothing from the South Stand and it didn't sound like 100s chanting it on the Kop. They really should be picked up for printing bullshit like this. Like someone mentioned earlier it reminds me of the total lie they printed about the pro Ched Evans chants at the Stevensge match.

Their chairman is a complete bellend of epic proportions.

ITV and others also reporting "hundreds". Total bollocks, and yes, it seems started by "our" local paper!

indeed there wasn't and the ones on the forum in that area are now having their say.

Star should apologise. I like the banter in G & H block when teams bring a large following - but there was nothing sung on Monday from that area.

View from Bradford City fans

"As i said i heard nothing so i cannot comment on what was chanted but has all this been blown out of all proportion."

"They sang "you're just a town full of ISIS." It's only technically racist by inference."

"I heard it.
Town fill of pakis they sang it didn't really catch on but it was loud enough.
I didn't notice billy sharp having coins thrown at him though."

"A Sheffield Utd fan even says hundreds of Sheffield Utd fans were signing "Just a town full of ISIS" and "Just a town full of Pa*is". Some City fans even tweeted during the match about this racist chanting."

"Not this 'old' chestnut, again ........ Who gives one ? We are a City full of 'Pakis', Indians, Polskis, Italians, Chinese etc - why the f'k do you all think we were entered for the culture capital award ?? FGS, grow some, and live with the oncoming 2016, and beyond !!"

"As above, I heard the chants about town full of pa***, although it wasn't for long. Also a few 'comments' shall I say along the same lines as we were queuing up. No stewards or police said owt though even though they must've heard it. Not on, but let's not blow it out of proportion either"

"As I posted on an earlier thread, heard a lass asking her bloke why the Kop were chanting Pakistan's Bradford Army. Think we should chant this at away games. Play the racists at their own game."

"told the grandson the batteries in my hearing aids needed changing, I said to him at the time why are the United fans singing "Parkinson's Bradford Army"

"I'm sure like most supporters, 99% of Sheff Utd fans are decent folk. You could even say the 1% are, but either just ignorant or misguided. But the fact remains, these chants (I didn't notice them myself) are only sing for derogatory reasons."

"We've had this sung at us for years. So what, who cares, I love my city and its culture and it doesn't offend me because I like living in bradistan as many outside call it. I dont give a flying **** if Neanderthals chant it because it's them it reflects badly on them not me or my great city. It's old, it's boring and its not worthy of reporting."

"The chanting lasted all of 30 seconds and came from the top left of the stand opposite city fans. 3 or4 stewards walked up looked round and went back. Neanderthal chants from a small minority. "

"I heard the chanting, about 15 or 20 seconds. It shouldn't happen but that's life. **** happens. Move on."

I heard the chanting on the kop from behind where I was sitting but it wasn't loud enough to make out what was being chanted especially the last word. It didn't last long at all. If the chant was to do with ISIS I do find it odd that there seems to be some implicit assumptions being made that all muslims are asians or that all asians are muslims - neither of which is true and are assumptions which, in themselves, could be viewed as examples of racist stereotyping. If it was ISIS then I think the chant was anti-Islamic in content rather than racist (even if that was its intention). The intention part is harder to establish than what was actually said. I'm sure the intention was offensive. Short and quickly curtailed it was most certainly.

Meanwhile, the Stir quite happy for a pig to post the following as a comment, and leave it unmoderated all day:

"Disgrace. These united fans should know, their club is partly owned by a man whose home country openly funds and supports ISIS"

I've been following Blades for over 40 yrs , as boy and man , and have never ,
seen any members of the national front ( or any other right wing party) selling there rag outside the lane ,
but saw it being sold outside millwall , Chelsea, weeds, and other grounds ,
Have never heard any overtly racist chanting inside our ground , but remember hearing it aimed at ours , and the home teams players, Newcastle, and Everton, to name 2
If it happened the " P " word variety then that needs stamping out , but if it was the Isis chant ,
what's next , I have red hair , am I to report the club if someone shouts get that red headed cunt, at an opposing player , let's hope they stamp out all the dingles , toytown , and pigs chants ,
Lads racism should never be tolerated, and should be stamped out completely, but let's get a fucking grip ,
all this don't sing certain songs for fear of offending certain people , don't go to Spurs and join in the chants of "yidos ". You'll get crucified for that .
Our club and supporters have never been racist , and hopefully never will .

They just go up in my estimation. Great response.

Ramon Mohamed - “ I was disgusted, you cannot compare a whole town to a murderous fanatical cult that has nothing to do with Islam."

Mohamed's quote is wide of the mark, no one was comparing a whole town to ISIS, that's not what the song implied at all, even if it is racist.

- the cult is called 'Islamic State', its ridiculous to say it has nothing to do with Islam that's just head-in-the-sand avoidance.

British Islamic society has to start dealing with the problem of the lure of ISIS however small the proportion of converts to the cause is. I suspect Mr. Mohamed may well read this and that is why I am posting, I accept I deviate from the core of the conversation.

If its the same Ramon Mohamed that cropped up when I googled his name then he is a politicised person who is public with his opinions, nought wrong with that, I'm fairly political myself, though I may hide behind a nom de plume on this message board.

- I do however suggest that Mr. Mohamed may be reacting politically to having heard the chants and I would really like to hear his reaction to my thesis if he does read it.

- the singers were idiots, quite possibly racist in intent though for me, like the views of some of the Bradfordians given above, the incident sounds trivial. (I wasn't at the game)

There has to be a certain level of 'sticks and stones' employed, offensive language is used all the time in football, and even in this forum, after all one man's Pig is another man's Owl

or even Blade for that matter.....

For what it's worth I'd agree and I'd also criticise the Star for taking at face value the report of only one fan on such an incendiary issue. They report that 'a few hundred' fans sang 'chants' from the 'South Stand near the away terrace' when the consensus on here seems to be that no more than a quarter of that number sang one chant from the back of the kop.

The way these debates become so polarised and reactionary however means that attempts to get facts in order before moving forward leads to accusations of condoning the chants. I think it's pretty shocking of the Star to run an article like that off the report of one fan, and only adding the extra voice of someone who wasn't at the game. Whatever your opinion is of how serious these chants are (there are obviously differing views), that kind of journalism, however unsurprising from the publication, is at best shoddy and unprofessional and at worst dangerous.

It is entirely unsurprising. Look how the media handled the Ched affair. By Ched I mean “Convicted Rapist Ched Evans” as he is now officially known. It’s the journo’s job to sensationalise to sell a story. It may be unethical but it’s not specific to the Stir.

" Degrading or victimizing people based on skin colour, nationality, sexuality, gender or any other state that one is born to? Abhorrent. No in-betweens on that front. "

But ..... and here is the question ...... do we add to that list things like; their weight, their height, the colour of their hair, if they have a pony tail, if their hair is long and unkempt, if they are ugly ( Ian Dowie ) and many more ??

Any of those things may cause offence / upset / anger ........or all three !!

This is why I say ..... keep politics out of football ....

UTB & FTP

Whilst I would say abusing or ridiculing any innocent person is wrong, I think there is a difference. Racism has a much wider world importance than making fun of “ugly” people. It creates division and fuels hatred and the history (slavery, segregation, anti-semitisim, “paki-bashing” etc.) which shows how dangerous it can be and how it can be an institutional widespread problem which can lead to victimisation of the many. Therefore, for me, it’s a matter which needs to be tackled whenever it rears it’s ugly head whether in football or elsewhere.
