Sad, sad news to hear the passing of a true legend.

I'm so very glad he nipped home for the first time in a long time last year, got to see the place and some old mates.

I was lucky enough to have spent time in his presence a number of times while he was across, cracking dry sense of humour and a lovely bloke with it. I'm not the kind to be in awe of footballers, but despite the fact I'm too young to have been lucky enough to see his Blades career first hand, I felt absolutely privileged to be in the presence of a hero.

Who is the man in light purple top between Eddie and Ted?

1-1 draw in March 1972 (Woody equalised with a penalty in the last minute). The Everton player challenging Woody is Howard Kendall!

I once did a season long analysis of United's goals and he either scored or assisted 75% of the season's total goals. .

That will be the 1969-70 season as I did a feature for Flashing Blade on his goals and assists for each of his 14 seasons. In 1969-70 season he scored 21 goals (none were penalties) and 29 assists!

RIP

Another one who is too young to have seen him play but regardless known who he was and how much of a legend he is since i was a kid my dad was always banging on about him and TC.

I started going to The Lane in 73/74 so was lucky enough to see Woody play. Thank you for the memories Woody, RIP a true Legend. A very sad day

One of the greatest players never to have played for his country. Once you get to the wrong side of 45, It's very rare that you get to feel happy about your age but right now I'm really glad to be old, or at least old enough to have seen the great man play and score some cracking goals. RIP Woody - a TRUE Blades legend.

If JP or anyone on the board of directors are reading through this thread, please can the Bramall Lane end be The Alan Woodward Stand from now on?

Unfortunately I just missed seeing him play but know what a fantastic player he was. Glad I was at the Lane when he came over a couple of months ago and he got a tremendous welcome from the fans.
RIP to one of the greatest Blades ever.

The old man raves about Currie, but Woodward was his favourite. Sad news. Thoughts out to his nearest and dearest.

How terribly sad, my all time greatest player. What an absolute genius this guy was when it came to football. A fantastic dead ball specialist, the best corner kicker anywhere ever and could bend a ball better than Beckham could ever dream of. Him and Lorimer had the hardest shot in football but oh what a joy to watch.

As a tribute I give you this from my early days watching my beloved Blades. Who remembers this ditty?

"Alan Woody Woody Woody Woody Woodward on the wing, on the wing
Alan Woody Woody Woody Woody Woodward on the wing, on the wing
Alan, Alan Woodward, Alan Woodward on the wi-ing
Alan, Alan Woodward, Alan Woodward on the wing."

At times to me he was Sheffield United. A fantastic servant and I propose we have a statue for the great man. Foxy can we start a collection?

RIP Woody...a proper Blades legend. I started supporting United in 1970 and Alan Woodward is still the finest no 7 I've seen grace a Blades shirt.

Random Memories
...the free kick he scored against Leicester. Shilton Just looked completely baffled.
...the 7-0 demolition of Ipswich Town, Woody scored four.
...a 3-1 win at White Hart Lane...Woody rampaging in the mud.

He's rightly remembered for his shooting boots but I bet his assists number in the hundreds too.

RIP one the Greats

R.I.P. Woody

Condolences to all family and friends

A proper right winger, who's corner taking never ceased to amaze me and with a shot that you didn't want to get in the way of.

You will be sorely missed

RIP woody, to young to see him play but seen many videos, blades legend will be sadly missed.
:(

Silent it would be of great interest and a true testimonial for Alan Woodward as a player and a legend if you could somehow reproduce that article for S24SU.

To put those figures into context our best player this season, Jamie Murphy, has played in 58 games at a lower level, scored 12 goals and 11 assists in a similar role to Alan Woodward. In 1970 the team as a whole will only have had around 40 or so fixtures. -21 GOALS and 29 ASSISTS, it is simply astonishing and he was exactly that, astonishing. . As I say above it was an absolute privilege to watch him for so many years. A true hero.

Boxing Day 1970. We were awarded a free kick at Kop End. As Woody was about to take it, a firework exploded in the Kop but the quick thinking Woody bended the free kick round the wall and into the net. Peter Shilton never moved (probably stunned by the firework explosion and losing his concentration). In the programme for the next home game it said that they were unable to take a photo of the goal because Woody was "too quick" for the photographers!

Will look for the FB issues. They are somewhere in the house. Hopefully Mrs Silent hasnt thrown them away

Those were the days jumping on the 25 bus from Beighton off to see the legends woody currie ted and Len Eddie and all the other great players in that team ,what a utter privalage it was .When you have seen such class in a red and white shirt you knew it was the blades for life .R.I.P Sir Alan Woodward . We ain't got a barrel of money

'E wor that good, it wer probably from his own corner :D

Nah they were like rockets were Woody's corners
Remember one of the papers doing an article of him bending corners directly into the net. Think it might have been after he did it against Ipswich.
Agee with other suggestions above a stand and a statue are the least we can do. I've written to the club in support of a statue and stand renaming and would urge everyone to do the same.
