Between a few of the people on here who can put this sort of thing together, a DVD would be a great idea. I would certainly pay for one. I know there may be issues around copyright? but it could go towards any fund to be appropriate for our shared legend. Surly there would be some way of people donating rather than paying and receive a free DVD? Anyway just thinking aloud for ideas.

Just before my time, never saw him play but grew up hearing about him from those that did.

I can't add anything to this thread other than to say RIP Woody, you were loved and revered and you'll be missed.

I'm too young to remember Woodward but my Dad was a huge fan.

I've heard all the stories about his various great goals etc. but my favourite tale is how he was sent off for telling a particularly biased official 'You're not going to let us win this, are you ref?'.

I'm sure someone can fill in the details - I don't think Woody was the only player set off that day.

Remember one of the papers doing an article of him bending corners directly into the net. Think it might have been after he did it against Ipswich.
Agee with other suggestions above a stand and a statue are the least we can do. I've written to the club in support of a statue and stand renaming and would urge everyone to do the same.
That would be after his goal direct from the corner at Leicester in Sept 1971, the following Monday in the Morning Telegraph there were 3 or 4 photos of him in 1967 hitting a corner (using the outside of his foot) at the Ball Inn ground that swerved into the net. The keeper in the photo was Bob Widdowson (our reserve keeper)

I wonder if that was at Burnley? I thought Woody was only sent off once. but perhaps there was another occassion. One for Silent/Dazza?

I am pretty sure one of the goals in his hat-trick at home to Southampton on 22 December 1973 was a header - can you help, Silent? - and at 5.55, this certainly was:

On the same video, at 7.10, how to take a corner.

I can remember three headers (two of which I was at the game) and yes, it was the second of his hat-trick goals against Southampton. It was at the Lane End, a cross came from the left and Woody dived to head it past Eric Martin (Saints keeper), this one on the video (5.55) was at Burnley in February 1975 (I wasnt at that match) and the third I can remember was in the 4-1 home win against Luton in March 1978. There is a photo of him beating Bobby Campbell (a strong striker and a good header of the ball) to head the ball in. Just remembered reading my dad's report of our 1-1 draw at Wolves in 1974-75 and I think he said our goal was a Woody header

RIP. Now all the angels will be singing " We've got Alan, Alan, Alan Alan Woodward on the wing, on the wing".

I've grabbed what clips I can find on youtube and put them together here...great goals, legendary corners and a two finger (well four actually!) salute for the Chelsea fans...

The free kick at Coventry is superb to watch. Love how he gets absolutely clattered, gets on with no fuss as it all kicks off, gets invited to take the free kick, calmly walks over and BOOM! Then celebrates casually as you like.

The signed cigarette he gave me at a player reunion dinner a few years ago has just taken on a new significance. One of my first real hero's. Thanks for the memories Alan. Rest In Peace.

That would be the 4-1 defeat at Burnley in March 1978

A player well before my time. One thing what has struck me is how my generation / the younger generation will probably not see a player of his standard not only play for the Blades but be a legend for many years to come. I also read somewhere that someone had a pint and a chat with him in the old crown on London road after the 125 celebrations, something the younger generation won't ever get to experience with how football is today.

RIP

We also had two players sent off at Oldham that season. They were John Flynn and Bobby Campbell. Ronnie Blair of Oldham was also sent off for fighting with Campbell. We lost 3-0
There was a lot of fighting going of that day:)

Darren The Stoke home game in October 1971 wasnt televised.

Highlights of Wendy v Blades in Sept 1966 (drew 2-2, Woody and Jones scored) was shown on ATV in the next day also highlights of the home game against L**ds in Nov 1967 was on ATV. Although Mick Hill scored the only goal of the game but it would be interesting to see Woody in goal (he replaced the injured Hodgy after 9 mins) and performing heroics against Lorimer and Johannesen. A Blade fan in the BLUT filmed the Blades v Watford match in 1971 (Woody scored the first with a penalty) and the footage was shown at the 1971 reunion 4 years ago

Really gutted. He was just coming into the team the first season I started watching United with my grandad. We used to go to the reserves one saturday and the first team games the next. I think at first he was regarded as a bit 'nesh', but he soon improved and started banging in wonder goals. he was a well established favourite before Currie arrived. Looking back it's amazing no one tempted him away after we were relegated in 1967 as it was clear by then he was something special. Of course if he had played for one of the premiership darlings he'd have been picked for England and there'd be a state funeral.

Maybe I was lucky enough to see him play 200 games and I can't remember a bad one (maybe red and white tinted glasses). I can honestly say It was an immense privilige to watch one of the best players of his generation playing so well and so long for us.

Fair enough.

We can add

1/2/69 Bury H
1/11/69 Blackburn H
10/3/73 West Ham H (no goals scored but 2 pens missed!)

Re: videos and memories, would be nice to put something together in an article/section on the main s24su site and fits in with something I've been thinking of doing for a while...

Copyright is an issue, but no problem at all creating something if people would like to contribute words and any images/videos I don't have.
