Sad, sad news to hear the passing of a true legend.

I'm so very glad he nipped home for the first time in a long time last year, got to see the place and some old mates.

I was lucky enough to have spent time in his presence a number of times while he was across, cracking dry sense of humour and a lovely bloke with it. I'm not the kind to be in awe of footballers, but despite the fact I'm too young to have been lucky enough to see his Blades career first hand, I felt absolutely privileged to be in the presence of a hero.

I didn't quite get this shot right but someone was lucky enough to have a chat with him in September.

How appropriate that the corner is in the back ground.

Mind you he wouldn't get in this current team, too good.

RIP Alan, thanks for the great times.

Very Very sad news, Alan was just before my time, but when I talk to my old Dad about United he puts Woodward in his top five United players of all time, and when I say that my Dad is old enough to make Jimmy Hagan the best player he ever saw, so he saw them all he must have been good.

RIP

Desperately sad news, one of my greatest regrets is that I am about a decade too young to have seen Woodward and Currie for United.

RIP Alan Woodward.

(The "Alan Woodward Stand" in place before the first game of next season please United.)
Brilliant idea. Why would you have a stand named after a local athlete with a peripheral connection with the club, when you could name one after one of its greatest servants. Woody, Joe Shaw et al all more deserving in my view. Perhaps we should resign the number 7 shirt or perhaps applause in the seventh minute of our first home game.

Nothing can express the sadness enough.
RIP my boyhood hero.
sorry please merge.
what a year this is turning out to be blades fans passing away and now a blades legend woody a very said day.
my first memory of woody was a trade mark screamer against forest in a fa youth cuptie at bramall lane that goal set a standard which he never failed to live up to.

16 years a Blade

I have him in my top 1

:(

Two years older than me I feel as though I grew up with him. I watched him home and away for a good majority of those games throughout his whole career ( 536 games 158 goals, what a ratio for a winger and what service to one club). In those days we watched players for so many years we felt as though we knew them personally. Never spoke to him but I feel as though part of our family has died.

It was an outstanding privilege to be lucky enough to enjoy his exceptional skills for so many years. He never did a nasty trick, was always focused and in control, a quiet assassin. I once did a season long analysis of United's goals and he either scored or assisted 75% of the season's total goals. No England managers had United on their radar, otherwise he would have had a successful international career, no doubt about it. Despite that scenario he stayed with United all his career in this country, a one-club man and part of our DNA for so many years.

I learned from a pal's dad that when Woodward played for Barnsley boys there had to be an agreement that he only played half the game otherwise the score would have been even more ridiculous. I recall him playing for the reserves once and he scored four. Pure natural class.

RIP. Blades Legend in the true sense of the words.

When my father started taking me to the Lane at the end of the 60s, it was Woody he told me to watch: "He's something special, that lad". My Dad died in 1988, but since then, any mention of Alan Woodward, any picture of him, any video clip would bring back memories of my father's enthusiasm for him and United and the joy of the old man throwing is arms in the air and yelling like mad after another Woody pile-driver.

Woody dying is like another connection with the memory of my dad being lost.

Oh noooo .............. I'm shocked to hear this, my all time favourite player. So many memories, goals from corners on more than one occasion, a terrific shot with both feet and could drop a cross right onto a centre forwards head when running to the by line at full speed, the guy made everything look easy and effortless. Such a pity Alf Ramsey's Engand didn't play with wingers he would surely have had hundreds of caps.
A true legend, we will never see anyone as good wearing the number 7 a true great gone but never forgotten.
RIP Alan.

Zablade. Your Dads judgement of a footballer is spot on RIP Woody.

Nah, they'll be reliving the best ones upstairs, quite possibly with a beer in hand.

Might be quite a few up there round the same table, I'd guess.

What a sad day!

I was one of those privileged to cut my Blades teeth on a diet of Woodward and Currie. For a short while in the early 70s, with those two in their prime, we had a team to compete with the best in the land. What heady days they were!

Woody epitomised everything that was good in the beautiful game: a player of great skill and composure; a tremendous work ethic and unflappable temperament. His banana kick corners and thunderbolt shot; his telepathic understanding with TC.

I recall a season after TC left when he tried valiantly to carry a fading team on his own shoulders. Others would have jumped ship. Not Woody.

My 3 boyhood heroes were Boycott, Woodward and Currie. All prodigiously talented but Woody stood out for his grace and humility - a real team player!

Thanks for the memories Woody. Blades legend!
