I was a paper boy at Harold Brooks mid to late 60's, with my main morning round in Base Green finishing up in Jaunty. Yes, I can remember going to Websters as a youngster with my mum, as well as the S & E co-op at Townend. Later on I became a member of the Carlton Social Club opposite the Heeley & Sheffield. Was always Sheffield in my time, whilst the other side of Townend, such as Charnock used to be Derbyshire. Frecheville, Hackenthorpe, Birley all used to be Derbyshire back then. Then Sheffield expanded, eventually consuming Mosborough, Halfway, Beighton etc. Can remember leaving the Old Harrow around 10.30pm in the 70's to get extra drinking time in Ridgeway.
… at The Phoenix?

The hill was called the Cowie. We used to play school football on the top and if you were under the cosh a quick “‘Ave it” would give you a breather
Yep, the cow flop field aka the cowie. Many a battle between Thornbridge and Frecheville schools took place on there until they merged to become Birley.

I went to Thornbridge but lived on Charnock so walked past the Harrow twice a day. They allowed underage drinking there so frequented often and remember seeing Greensleeper play there ( very famous Sheffield band erm in Sheffield) who were incredible

Dave Carr, Carey Bayliss and Kipper. Great band. Bayliss went on to work as a producer and was responsible for some hideous pop hits.

The 51 only started running to/from Gleadless in the late 60's. Initially with the bendy buses, running through to Lodge Moor. I used to catch it to school, getting off at Crookes Junction. Before then the 101, 102 and 105 buses ran into town and I caught the 60 bus from opposite Midlands Station up towards Broomhill.
The 51 did replace the 102/5 in the sixties but not with bendy buses, they came much later. The first single deckers were the Swifts which terminated at the bog island opposite the Red Lion pub.

Stan the barber was a Blade. After finishing one cut, he'd turn round to the people waiting and shout 'Who's next? United!'.
In the mid 70s, Friday nights often started in the Heeley and Sheffield, then on to the Old Harrow (known as the 'Arra'). We used to drink Gold Label barley wine
in pint pots topped up with a half a bitter. Fuckin' rocket fuel! As it shut at 10:30, we used to sup up and sprint (ahh, to be young!) on to The Phoenix at Ridgeway, as that was in Derbyshire and open 'til 11:00. We'd get a couple of rounds in there, but often felt so shook up from the running that we couldn't finish them before drinking up time was enforced. Then a stroll back via The White Heather chippy. Or maybe down to Buxtons chippy (best chips ever) just off Hollinsend Road if we felt up to it......
Heady days!

Was Buxtons the one on Alnwick Road? If so, it was a sad day when it became a take away.

I heartily endorse your comment about Buxton's chippy!

Sounds so familiar to our life all those years ago. Drinking in the Heeley & Sheffield, New Inn, Red Lion, Old Harrow, Phoenix, Royal Oak, Noah's Ark and many others. One of the lads back then (Big John) used to have bitter with Tennents Gold Label as a chaser. My oldest mate (since '59, unfortunately some no longer with us) lived on Foxdale Avenue, just round the corner from Buxtons chippy. We still go to the Lane as season ticket holders now, meeting in the Sheafview for a few beers before the game. How long for, who knows.

Fao Isaw JoeShaw
I have the Edmonton City v Sheffield United program as my Dad's mate lived near Joe Shaw on Bishopscourt Road and autographed it. Back in'74 I played for Dronfield's Hyde Park pub team with TC and John Hope in charge and John 'acquired' a full set of United kit. Obviously there was a big fight for the No 10 shirt. I got No 7 which is back at BDTBL in John Garrett's Museum.

First time poster. Nice to hear the comments about my late Dad Stan the Barber. He was definitely a Blade and made sure me and my brother Chris were too. Took us to our first game in the "new" Bramall Lane stand to see TC's debut against Spurs. He played for Mosborough Trinity for many years and they used to get United's old kits too. I will try and dig a photo out. UTB
