Adkins to get Murphy cash

probably being economical with the truth, I expect that it will be drained away on wages and or other expenses with maybe a 250K signing and maybe a loan if we're lucky. I certainly dont think we'll see a million pound player arive. Hope he makes me eat my words but we've seen and heard it all before
Lost me here Ted, why wouldn't wages be considered putting it back into the first team?
Are you saying you'd want £2 Million spent on transfer fees, and then wages on top?

Not trying to be provocative just a genuine query of what your expectations are.

It's always the same when it comes to these sales, but if it's all reinvested then great and it's not an awful sale. Particularly if it's spent on another central defender, a goalkeeper and a replacement winger. I personally don't think we need a central mid, but that's just me.

Yeah, know what you mean.
I'm amongst those who tend to think there's no need for a direct replacement for Murphy. And unlike you I'd like to see a midfielder brought in, one with some clout & presence.
But agree with you about priorities being a a centre-half (however well Collins played on Saturday) & a goalie (despite Howard playing even better than Collo. To be fair to him, he pulled off two pretty stunning reaction saves, & that's quite apart from the quality of his handling, distribution, & his command of his area: he was genuinely very impressive on Saturday, I thought).

I wonder how many of those up in arms when it was rumoured that Scoogs was being sold for £2 Million last summer feel differently about it now?

It was a good price for a player who wanted to leave and submitted a written transfer request. I know we've heard all this before with other players but I really don't know what people expect the board to do.
While some like to float the idea of keeping him against his will it's just not a viable or sensible solution. Personally I'm glad the club ensured he submitted a written request, we all know where we are then, and I've no bitterness to Murphy who wants to move to forward his career. For me, this is pretty much a text book case of how it should be done, my only gripe would be that if Murphy felt that way then a transfer request at the start of the summer would have been preferable. However we have plenty of time to use the money, although I've highlighted elsewhere that I don't think we need a like for like replacement given the wide players already on the books, we have to let the manger highlight the players he wants who are available, and if the players aren't available we move forward with what we've got until we can get someone who will improve the side.
I honestly don't think we've been hugely weakened by this, it's disappointing and is a step backwards, but not the killer blow some seem determined to make it out to be.

I still think at 1.5/1.75m (if true) we've undersold. But I agree with the rest of that and would absolutely look to invest elsewhere. I do think there's been a tendency to play down Murphy's ability in the rhetoric since Friday, aided by Adams doing so well there vs Chesterfield. You'd be forgiven for thinking we wanted him sold all along to free up space for his successor Adams based on some comments – a view seemingly only really considered by Clough...

Great news that we got the 1.5 as a down payment for a change

I mean that I dont expect us to spend it all on new players but expect to hear that it has been spent on wages on players we already have and in effect all we'll see from this 1.5mil is maybe a 250K player. I get the impression we've already spent the money on Sharpe, Salmon and Woolford and that they knew Murphy would be leaving, well now get fobbed off with the old line that there was noone good enough to sign and the rest of the cash will just dissapear into the void that is SUFC.

I'm not playing him down at all, but £1.75 Million - £2 Million is a huge amount for a league one player. I think he was a decent player at our level and got us undeserved points on a fair few occasions. If I had complete control of the situation I wouldn't have had him leave, but we had little choice and he wanted to go.
I don't think he ever was a consistent top performer regularly running sides ragged at our level. and I don't think it' likely to destroy our season even if we don't buy any replacements.

I tried telling our lass I was been economical with the truth once.......it ended badly. I'm sure Jim has learned from my mistakes.

Adkins might get the cash so what ? that don't mean other clubs will be willing to sell their players or that the player wants to move to Sheffield Utd. Money is worthless if no one is selling, not all clubs fold as easy as SUFC you know.
Shut up misery guts :)

Tbh, I'm finding it really difficult to value players these days. It just seems more random.

The simple property valuation method is to look at comparables so what recent deals are similar to Murphy's, i.e. a winger in his mid twenties who is good but hasn't had loads of pundits fawning over him and doesn't appear to have real PL potential (so not like a Dele Alli type)?
Genuine question as due to holidays etc I have seen any pre-season reviews in the papers this year so I'm not that up on who's moved where apart from the PL.

Of course it is better to have funds available but it doesn't change the fact other clubs might not be willing to sell their players nor that the said players might not welcome the move, so I don't really see the point you are trying to make.

The first part of my sentence is the point I was trying to make.

Your repeated reply confirms your negative view, but I think I knew that already anyway :-)

Shut up misery guts :)
