Adkins to get Murphy cash

I'd seen on F book Mr Phipps had said because the sale was unplanned and budgets already set the proceeds would indeed be made available for NA.

Adkins might get the cash so what ? that don't mean other clubs will be willing to sell their players or that the player wants to move to Sheffield Utd. Money is worthless if no one is selling, not all clubs fold as easy as SUFC you know.

I got he was taking the piss, String, and I'm sure most others did, except maybe those he was quoting ;)

I got it too. :)

It helps if you know the poster though, bc there are some (or even plenty ) who might well have written that with a straight face.

In fact if we wait a while some may appear on this thread.

I wonder how many of those up in arms when it was rumoured that Scoogs was being sold for £2 Million last summer feel differently about it now?

It was a good price for a player who wanted to leave and submitted a written transfer request. I know we've heard all this before with other players but I really don't know what people expect the board to do.
While some like to float the idea of keeping him against his will it's just not a viable or sensible solution. Personally I'm glad the club ensured he submitted a written request, we all know where we are then, and I've no bitterness to Murphy who wants to move to forward his career. For me, this is pretty much a text book case of how it should be done, my only gripe would be that if Murphy felt that way then a transfer request at the start of the summer would have been preferable. However we have plenty of time to use the money, although I've highlighted elsewhere that I don't think we need a like for like replacement given the wide players already on the books, we have to let the manger highlight the players he wants who are available, and if the players aren't available we move forward with what we've got until we can get someone who will improve the side.
I honestly don't think we've been hugely weakened by this, it's disappointing and is a step backwards, but not the killer blow some seem determined to make it out to be.

On 14th August Jim said this on fb

Consistent with established policy at the Club, we are not talking about the terms of the transfer. For those who wonder, yes, consistent with our existing practice, the proceeds of this transaction are applied to first team football.

I take this to mean, eg, transfers or wages for loan players.

For info the whole statement is here:

The official confirmation is now out. Jamie Murphy is moving to Brighton. For all Blades, I think, this will come as a blow. We all know Jamie is quality. He was our player of the year last season for very good reason. Jamie joined us in January 2013 (during the Danny Wilson era) and has appeared in most matches since that time, bagging 21 goals.

Throughout the close season and until very recently, when we received a written transfer request from Jamie, we planned to keep Jamie in the side. The board and manager were of one mind on this topic and the owners had made a special provision to ensure the finances were there to keep Jamie, despite offers coming in for his services from leagues above.

There were, however, always two contingencies pursuant to which we would potentially need to consider a transfer: One, if the new gaffer decided he did not want him; and, two, if the player asked to go. Unfortunately, contingency two has materialised. We naturally have sought to dissuade Jamie from his desire to go, but it is clear to us Jamie knows what he wants and is resolved to play in a league above where his candidacy for a spot in his nation's side might be stronger. No one can fault Jamie for that. In fact, I am proud of him.

Jamie leaves Sheffield United with a great feeling for the Club. He tells me he has had a very positive experience with us. We all know he gave us 100% in every match he played in. For my part, I am very grateful to Jamie for his service to our Club. I hope you will join me in wishing Jamie the very best of good luck going forward -- Once a Blade, always a Blade!

MB, I realise it's difficult for you ever to see anything positive about SUFC, but as a starting point, would you accept that the fact that the funds will be made available is better than them not being made available?

My problem is with this word, I wont believe its a fact until I see it spent

Oof, I must admit that the bit of my sentence which said "that the fact that the funds" had a superfluous "that" and read badly, I'll never make a journalist :-)

I didn't use the word fact to be provocative, or capitalise it for emphasis, but I expect it to be true.

Do you think Jim is lying?

probably being economical with the truth, I expect that it will be drained away on wages and or other expenses with maybe a 250K signing and maybe a loan if we're lucky. I certainly dont think we'll see a million pound player arive. Hope he makes me eat my words but we've seen and heard it all before

No. It's a bad thing to have the best part of £2m to spend. No other club will sell to SUFC and no player ever agrees to sign for us...

Thus enlightened, I do wonder at the millions of words wasted over the years begging the club to make money available for recruitment.

It's a funny old game...

Isn't paying the wages of a loan player a good way of investing in the first team?

Of course it is better to have funds available but it doesn't change the fact other clubs might not be willing to sell their players nor that the said players might not welcome the move, so I don't really see the point you are trying to make.

An "immediate downpayment of £1.5m": now that's something we're not used to. (Usually a fiver now & the rest in tiny instalments or in five years time, or whatever.)
That's a big cash injection.
And Jim, to be fair, has explicitly said it's all going on "the playing side".

Tbh, I'm relishing the next couple of weeks now: no-one (else) to sell; money to be spent...

It's always the same when it comes to these sales, but if it's all reinvested then great and it's not an awful sale. Particularly if it's spent on another central defender, a goalkeeper and a replacement winger. I personally don't think we need a central mid, but that's just me.

It is better to be trying to buy now because in Janauary they certainly don't want to sell and if they do its double the price. We had to wait for most of the Maguire cash to come through last season hence we ended up getting Brayford later on.
