Adkins Interview Ahead of Wigan (H) - and after the JNTW

  1. I think that grossly misrepresents the interview he's not pointing fingers
  2. the players do need supporting.
  3. the defensive tactics (which I really don't like) are pragmatic given our experience of attacking adventurous football: we've lost two League games in three months.
1) I don't listen to his interviews but from your summary he highlights us twice, his second comment sounds like we're not allowed to express ourselves if they are playing poorly (can't stand any over protecting of experienced players).
2) Then the players need to start playing as I said before, you just can't expect fans to clap/ cheer and sing if the players are not doing enough on the field.
3) "we've lost two League games in three months" comments like that Clough always came up with to defend poor performances. Sorry I just can't accept this type of football at the lane, it needs to stop and more we play it, the more I will question Adkins.

Those Scunny players must have been mugs then to listen to that tripe and still get promoted.........twice.

What bloody mugs those Saints players were too! Getting promoted two divisions on that garbage.

Good job we have got him sussed, eh?

I couldn't care less what he did more than 4 years ago.

He's done nothing in the past 3 years, and he's been underwhelming since he's been in charge for us, and we currently sit in 9th place playing pretty awful football.

Meanwhile we have to listen to his painful interviews.

But that's okay, because he has a team of great lads, showing grit and determination and desire, and they're having a right good go.

I agree with this to a point - he makes positive reference to the supporters and the part they can play in the remaining games but is clearly aware of and makes reference to how influential the crowd can be and how quickly the atmosphere could turn toxic . My take on the subtext was "We are in a hole, the players we have are all we have got to deliver what I want to achieve this season (saving possibly one of the transfer targets coming in on loan as two of his transfer targets are now in their club's first team) and we can either roll over and die or we can fight on until it ceases to be a mathematical possibility. The tactics are to get the best results out of the current squad not his preferred way to play. It was more of a plea to support the shirt I think"

Fine. Get down the car park then with Barney and Brian the Blade.

Barnsley won tonight. Do you fancy Luke Johnson as manager then?

When have I said I want him sacked?

I can dislike a manager and find his interviews tedious, boring and frankly insulting to the fans listening....but at the same time not want him sacked.

Sacking managers every year doesn't help anything. Adkins deserves at least two full seasons to see if he can succeed. Like any other manager does.

I hope he does succeed.

Apologies my friend.

I seem to have spent most of today arguing with tosspots who want a new manager every week/month. Glad to hear you are not one of them.

No worries. Lots of stress and tension this week amongst blades!

Maybe it's just his scouse accent that drives me up the wall!

Really enjoyed this interview, particularly his remarks about the profile of players he's chasing which, imo, represent longer term planning. Also liked how he repudiated the negative implications of Phipps' comments stressing his desire, and the possibility, of going up this season. Credit (for once) to radio pig for giving a United manager longer than a few minutes to communicate with us, whilst the incumbent pig drones on week after week.
I've noticed that - pig's managers have always been given much longer. Still I usually listen to it later on the net so just fast forward past that bit.

Hate how he points the finger to the fans, tells them the players need supporting. They will get the support once they start getting a spine and start playing attacking football.
I cant believe we are resorting to defensive tactics in this league and still we slip up.
Its embarrassing!
Players will perform better with the fans encouraging them, and playing in a positive atmosphere, thats just the point Adkins was making.

Everton players have openly talked about the negativity at Goodison (before Wed night), affecting the younger players, fans don`t realise the difference they make.
I think Adkins was just trying to encourage fans to be more positive, a lost cause I know, but it would help.

He's very much toeing the party line, which I suppose he has to.

I think the club should ban all talk about getting back into the premier league. We're such a country mile away from achieving promotion from this league, it's ridiculous to talk about promotion from the league above. And should by some miracle we do get out of this league and they take the same approach, it'll be another half decade before we can start thinking about promotion again.

He 'hopes' one of these three alleged perm signings 'may' become a loan, which realistically means none of them will.

I don't have to read the rest of this, nail on head, the premier league is a million miles away when you won't strengthen a very poor slow disjointed team with money to spend and a fantastic infrastructure...

Show me a few players who want to push themselves onward and upward, nshow me skill, pace, guile, and quality, show me a bloody mindedness and a leader who will put a line in the sand and say No, that's enough, we stand our ground now, put the boot in, earn the right to play, and let's fucking get after them...

Instead of studying Colchester in detail, acknowledging thier threats, and giving them every respect, I want the confident talented and cocky players in our team, not a bunch of John inmans worried about a division three winger who was released from Crewe..etc..

Its never a negative atmosphere at the start of a game, its how the players play that upset fans.
Sorry but its up to the players to get the fans excited, not the other way round.

We used to laugh at Wednesday for having Strappon being open with them.

We also used to laugh at Wednesday for talking of the Premier League when they were in 3rd Division.

We now have Phipps and are also talking about the premier league but yet we can't muster up victories against the might of Shrewsbury, Crewe and Oldham.

Embarrassing doesn't quite cover it.

True mate, very true, but the frustration starts too early.
Bloke opposite me was shouting abuse at Harris within 2 mins of one game, premeditated abuse.

It`s like people are waiting for the first mistake, then its `right, lets get all our frustration out`
Games are very rarely won early, be better if we could just be a touch more patient.

And the old "it's the fans fault" line is trotted out again - I'm sorry for spending hard earned money on a season ticket for past 30 years and travelling 60 miles round every home game - perhaps next season I won't bother and poor little lambs like that toss pot Collins can 'perform' in peace!

It is not the fucking fans fault!!!!!

All sounds nice and cosy. Adkins unfortunately saddled with the unenviable task of riding out this storm of expectancy and expecting us to believe any old crap. I'd like to see McCabe answer some questions candidly, set to him by people who don't have an agenda of fostering buckets of positivity where there really is not much to see. Adkins can be as upbeat as he wants and appeal to supporters to 'get behind the team', but the squad has been denuded of such ability now that we are not contenders for any real challenge, and the twenty odd thousand turnstile-turners have other ideas. Getting behind the team is piss easy. Does he expect the supporters to cheer and clap wildly when we get bummed at home by Bury, Colchester and Peterborough? He seems to forget last season and the season before really gave us nothing except disappointment and avoidable defeats. If you give three to four hours of your Sheffield-living life (in some cases a lot more) on a Saturday only to watch the team defeated and languishing in the mid reaches of the third tier of English football how does he expect normal human beings to respond?

Like I say, it isn't his fault, or even the players. He is an evidently good football manager and his squad is possibly at the physical limit of it's ability. We might as well be sticking Stocksbridge Steels out there tomorrow for the end result. They aren't good enough and we are relying on the past-talismanic effect of a right-back, a once-prolific centre forward who is managing to keep us neutrally buoyant and a bit-part attacking midfielder-cum-forward who still can't find a regular start position to settle in to. The rest are simply chaff ... bourne proof because no-one has come swooping in with transfer offers for them and in truth, we could lose any one of them right now to a transfer bid and they'd be replaced with a similar player in the second string of equally low expecttation. The hole which Murphy left - our last regrettable transfer out - still hasn't been filled and we miss his ability to take on their wide defenders and draw two players in, not to mention his mazy runs into the box and the occasional goal.

FWIW - I don;t think protests are constructive ... at the moment. I do think the stadium crowd vocalising their feelings toward the directorship is in order if Saturday returns another disappointment because I feel we have reached yet another tipping point in their testing of fan's resolve. Whatever happens (and I believe it won't be promotion) there had better be some pretty good reconstruction in the summer because season six in this divsiion could finish the club off as one of the leagues' key components and doom us to this forgotten wilderness for a very long time.

Good, if slightly long interview!
Adkins is right re the fans, I wish we could all just get behind the team during the game, a supportive Bramall Lane is an arena where opponents dread.
A negative, moaning Bramall Lane is what every away club strives for.

Get behind the team, and remember being a supporter, means to support!

Sadly, I get the impression that there are fans who are hoping for a bad match tomorrow, just to allow them another opportunity to peddle their frustration.

That is absolute Bollox I'm sorry. Who in their right mind 'wants' a bad match?

Give over - some fans revel in the negativity.

A slow start v Wigan and they can bring out the 'board out' chants, boos for the players and suggestions of boycotts. Perfect for them.

Thats the impression I`m getting too.
Unfortunately, theres a negative element, who will never change.

Up to us positives to drown them out!

No message could have been any clearer
If you want to make the world a better place,
Take a look at yourself, and make that change.

No mention of shoes off in that song ;)

True

I hope we smash Wigan to bits. I hope we spend the last five stroking the ball around the centre third watching the Pie-Eaters chase it forlornly and a massive cheer goes up at the end with Adkins and the players smiling broadly and a 4-0 win under our belt, with roygbiv showing us stuff from the Wigan site which says 'they totally outplayed us' and 'Sheffield United are back'. No one wants us to lose, not even Barny.

Chances are though we might see summat different.

So the crowd will all start singing 'Man in the Mirror' by the known chabby-diddler, Michael Jackson?

Shamone!

Je don't think so.

Has Adkins been sleeping in his car outside Dan Burns house. Keeping him under surveillance and interceping his mail?
