A Salt N Battered

We travel from Northern Ireland about 8 to 10 games per season and the itinerary is usually always the same; early morning flight to Liverpool, hire care to Sheffield, early lunch in Assault and battered. Chip buttys are not an option in NI so my young lad loved getting it as his prematch lunch. Disappointing news.

So, best chippy in Sheffield? For me, Two Steps..

but for still cooking in dripping, getting fresh fish, same family since the Sixties, serving girls with right balance of attitude and service and allowing me to be one of the resident artists (albeit in lockdown!). I give you VC Jones in Whitstable.

When we end up playing Dover it’s worth a trip..

All hail beef dripping!
Are there any real stand out chippies in Sheffield these days?

Two Steps has always been decent. Whitby’s off the Parkway always used to be decent but not been for a while. The one in Moor Market has a decent rep as well but not been since it moved from Castle Market. Other than that can’t think of any that are more than “alright”.

Don’t think I’ve ever had fish and chips better than the Magpie Cafe in Whitby personally.

Dore Chippy. Lys Mousset will be in there all week comfort eating.

Four Lanes is the only one I can think of that's genuinely good. Shame where it is mind.

Whitby's was decent last time I went (pre lockdown though).

If ever a shop name summed a road up , this chippy did 🤔☺️

I went to visit Yellow Arch Studios a while ago. Wanted to show my granddaughter and her boyfriend where the Monkeys recorded their first material. Bumped into Richard Hawley - bit of a miserable git, but we were in his control room in his studio time but a little politeness and cheerfulness doesn't go amiss, does it?

Anyroad, round the corner was a proper one-shop chippy, one counter typical queue in the street, servers in white lab coats with white mesh trilbys on.

We all had scran, and I introduced my grandaughter's boyfriend to proper three times fried chippy chips and a fishcake with said breathtaking amounts of salt and Hendos on. I don't think he realised where the food ended and his fingers begun. Sure he bit into them a couple of times.

I had a small chips (which was really a large) and a fishcake butty, proper flat white floury breadcake with cheap margerine, all of it soaked in Hendos and salt.

It was manna from heaven

Hicks Street? Used to live a short walk away but it was only open Monday - Friday lunchtimes so rarely got the chance to go. Top drawer stuff. I think they’ve got one at Upperthorpe now as well.

The Magpie is overrated and dear. You need to go across the Bridge to get better!

Awful stuff. Presumed it was just down to the pandemic.

My mum still lives up Crookes and I believe they’ve sold/are selling the shop now. No idea if it’s as a going concern or not.
End of an era. I used to live on Nairn Street & we were in all the time as kids. Remember Mr Broomhead senior was a right jolly sort & they were big Blades IIRC.
Went to school with a couple of lads whose mum worked in there for years too.
Tragic for all concerned.

Man, they weaponise Fish and Chips there.

Its strange, because 'When The Sun Goes Down' was written about that area.

It's also ground zero for my maternal grandmother's family. My mother spent most of WWII deep in the shelters while Hilter dropped tonnes of high explosive on the Neepsend steelworks where my grandfather worked.

It’s interesting that despite all the gentrification it’s still pound for pound the best place to eat round there.

You talking Mr Chips? Always found them to be the underated one with everyone picking Trenchers or Magpie. We always used to go to Mr Chips when we had younger kids, they also do a vegetable oil option. Nothing beats The Magpie for Fishpie though apparently.

Tony's in Mosborough village, never had a bad meal from there. Smith's in Woodhouse (was Mannings) is very good too.
Smiths is very good,my aunty used to work in mannings so got quite a lot free,we recently tried handsworth fish bar waste of time ordered the mini fish for ah lasses young un and my god it wouldn't fill a mouse.

Hitler a bit pissed off about your Grandad's 'my takes' ?

Was closed again for the Luton game. Has she gone for good now
The notice on the door that day stated something along the lines of “closed for the foreseeable due to not being economically viable”.

I guess the amount of home games called off over Xmas might have been the final nail - real shame if so.
