A Depressing Realisation

I've been assuming that none of those would be extended, given we've made no effort to do so as yet. However, I'm getting a really bad feeling that several will be should we not get promoted. He seems happy to rely on Collins and J-Mac at the moment, there's a fair chance that won't change.

That's gonna take some 'Game Changing Investment' to replace, isn't it? Considering that will leave us with a barebones squad (and huge deficiencies in many key positions) and what looks like McCabe's reluctance to spend any more in the playing staff, I'd put twenty quid on at least ten or twelve of those lot remainining at Bramall Lane on extended contracts.

Think about it - He's jizzed on million plus on a spanking new playing surface, which has had zero effect on our output. So that's investment in the material of the club, rather than it's playing power. Sounds like he'd be happy to sell, provided the right buyer came along. Trouble is, he's got everything bust up so well into sub-companies, 'the club' as a whole would cost fuck-tonnes to purge MCabe as an entity and start again.

I know people come on here spouting platitudes about him wanting the best for the club but it seems to me that this is a misguided assumption with regard progress up the leagues. He's quite happy to blame and sack managers whilst the net playing ability of this group of players remains below what is expected to gain promotion.

There is a strong argument that none of those players should be retained.

Adkins has turned out to be a shit version of Clough without any of the exciting aspects that Clough had such as the cup runs and so will deserve the sack if he doesnt get any further than he did. If Clough had been given the money it cost to get Adkins in we would be going up this year.

I would not keep one of the out of contract or loanees. They are not good enough. At most can see adkins giving long another year (as back up). I wouldnt.

They should all be binned and he should list/release DDG, scougall, mcnulty, reed, woolford, freeman.

And exactly what would the message be?

So the manager does as you hope, gets rid of the lot.

Then what? Buy another 10 to 15 players who in a few months time you will complain about also and want them binning off too? And so the cycle continues.

I appreciate this is just a forum where football 'knowsnowts' like me and you spout drivel about the beautiful game. But let's face it if we knew as much as some on here think they do we'd be actually in the professional game at some level and not tapping on a keyboard as if we have the 'answer'.

I dont get how its such a far stretch of the imagination that given say the mil or 2 it cost to sack him and get Adkins in that he would have strengthened the key areas we needed strengthening. I will give him a full season but I expect him to finish in a better position than Clough did if hes to stay. I thought there was a marked change in style when we played Coventry even though we wernt very good and saw it as a posative which made me want to give him more time but it looks like its not working. Im just so dissalusioned with the Blades at the mo, when we look like we're going in the right direction we always seem to shoot ourselves in the foot and either sell our key players or sack managers when theres no call to. When we signed Clough it finally felt like we had the right man in who gave us the excitment of the cup runs and it felt like Untied again, so we end up sacking him and even though Adkins CV says hes the messiah I just havent seen anything to make me believe it.

I was busting a gut to get back from hols in time for the game on Sat but having been delayed just missed it, I was pissed off until I spoke to my mates whod been and then I remebered just how mind numbingly boring this season had been, then I was glad that Id just gone home and put me feet up.

In a perfect world, I agree, but it's going to be a much longer process than that. I think, if the recruitment is right, then the base of the players we have left can be supplemented by better players enough to get promoted.
