Every year we have debates about football policing tactics and choose to blame the cops completely.

Fact is, if everyone who went to the game acted like fair minded reasonable people then there would be no need for the cops, and then no prospect of them inconveniencing anyone. But they don’t.
So the cops are left with the impossible task of preventing idiots clashing in a city centre setting, with absolutely no powers to allow them to do that effectively.

Granted they do make a friggin mess of it more often than not, mostly due to some shiny arsed clown who has no common sense and realistic view of situation trying to over complicate it.
It’s actually quite simple.
Lots of cops swamping the streets within half mile, zero tolerance policy to deal with aggression and groups of pissed up gobshites. Make it clear of this policy so that anyone who wishes to risk taking them on spend the night in the cells, miss the game and risk a banning order. Act like a twat, get what you deserve.

Think is.. some police services seem to manage the idiots without having to alienate the vast majority of football fans.

http://www.fsf.org.uk/ do great work to try to forge a better all round situation.

Difficult to argue with much of that but Durham Police on Derby day in September were led to believe by some shiny arse knob that the trams were full of hardcore hooligans. Deliberately. As I said earlier, those on the frontline have the hard job while some twat in a dress uniform who carries a pen rather than a baton, gets a photo on the front page patting himself on the back with no comeback for lying through their teeth.

And I can’t disagree with that either.
Ranking cops are so far removed from policing there’s really no wonder they rarely get it right.

The coppers I know are bigger idiots and like a ruck more than anyone I know who goes to the football.

That's the real problem.

Pen pushers in a portacabin commanding idiots who like a rumble as much as the football fans..

What is it about the derby that makes a higher level of search necessary anyway?
What exactly do they think people will be taking in, rocket launchers and mortars? The fans are adequately segregated and if they’re concerned about pyros then surely they can use CCTV and stewards/ Police officers to identify any offenders?
Or is it inflatable pigs they’ll be looking for

What exactly do they think people will be taking in, rocket launchers

During this game, three flares were aimed from the South Stand at the Sheffield Wednesday fans who occupied both tiers of the Bramall Lane end. The first flew high over the roof of the Bramall Lane upper tier. The second hit the penalty area where Owls’ keeper Kevin Pressman gave possibly the first instance of a ‘bouncing pig’. The third hit the Wednesday fans in the Bramall Lane upper tier. Report.

Why don’t we just let SY police roll some red and blue coloured dice three times, and declare the result therefore removing the need for an actual game ....

Absolute megalomaniacs....

What on earth are they expecting?! This is a football match that's going off tonight isn't it? o_O

I think McCabe has told them to say that so he gets a load of money from booze and pies
heard a rumour that booze in the ground was banned. would be a classic SYP decision if so as that certainly won't tempt many who fancy a pre match drink after work to get in early.

I'd hasten to add to this to plod on the door probably aren't the blokes who's made the decisions, so don't treat them as such

"I was only following orders"
"I don't make the rules, i just enforce them"

Any police officer that abuses the rights of law abiding citizens (regardless of who told them to do what) deserves what they get, in my book.

As long as the police take the time to discern between scroats trying to cause trouble and normal people minding their own business it'll be fine.

In my experience that hasn't always been the case. Never understood why I should be treated like a criminal because I have the temerity to attend a game of football

In cases of violence or moral conduct I agree wholeheartedly.

In cases we are due to see most often at football, e.g road closures, searches, etc, the "them and us" view isn't needed.

The "them and us" mentality at football games, is generated by the police.

As a law abiding citizen, i resent being searched, told which public roads i may or may not walk on and being physically pushed.

I got in with a viciously sharp plastic packet of pastrami, heavy block of cheese, rock like melton mowbray pork pie, roasted salted cashews (choking hazard) and sweet chilli crisps. There was one old bloke (ok my age) half heartedly looking into bags. Swerved him with my dangerous cargo into the game. If I hadn't been so sober I could have caused some reet damage.

The 2 stewards on the turnstile I went through (at about 7.15, naughty me for being late!!) weren't searching anyone at all. The ones on next turnstile were searching everyone, as I got to the front of the queue, one of the stewards said to the other one "They're searching everybody there, do you think we should be?"

That's what time SYP kindly ask that we all take our seats. 6:45pm at the absolute latest.

I don't really 'look forward' to derby games, but this lot really know how to put a fucking downer on the whole event.

An hour before kick off? Fuck off.

I came past Harley's (Glossop Road/Inner Ring Road) at 6.15 and the police presence outside was unbelievable - about twenty coppers and half a dozen meat wagons. The rest of the bars on West Street were similar.

Additionally, they are planning to keep Wednesday fans in the ground "for around 10 minutes" after the final whistle.

Yeah, brilliant that was. Now it turns out it was 'voluntary'. Ever tried herding cats? Or pigs? If they had kept the pig fans in for, say, 30 minutes the Blades fans could have dispersed properly. Instead, the majority (from three sides of the ground) were herded onto Shoreham Street which was overcrowded beyond belief.

SYPD. To protect. To serve. To fuck up.
