I remember going to Rotherham to watch Brum that season and Hockey played right wing. Latchford was a bit like Batistuta the Argie centre forward.
You mean 1967-68 season when you saw Rotherham (Tommy Docherty was the manager) play Brum?

Trevor Francis was top class. I seem to remember him getting injured at the Lane playing for Brum.

As this is a kinda nostalgia/historical thread I'd like to ask a question on a matter that's been burning for a while.

Whilst doing my family tree, I found that my Grandad was born & lived at 262 Bramall Lane. The Harrison family lived there from (at least)1891 till after 1901. I am extremely proud of this fact.
The question is: does anyone out there know whereabouts on Bramall Lane 262 was (which side of the road etc) or how I could find this information??

When I was looking into my dad's family tree I was trying to work out where 39 Chesterfield Road in Dronfield was in 1911 so I went to the County Records Office in Matlock to look at the Register of Electors for Dronfield and then realised the house numbers for that road had changed in the early 1950s so I compared the 1950 and 1952 Register of Electors to which houses the families lived in. I wrote down a list of families with the numbers they lived in 1950 before moving to the 1952 Register of Electors and then wrote down the new numbers the families were living in 1952. Problem solved apart from one or two families who had moved out but you may work it out

The Cricketers is number 106 and the Railway is number 184 so it figures that number 262 (even number) is on that side of the road but further away from town than the Railway.

I would hazard a guess that number 262 could be somewhere opposite JE James cycles.

Done some research yesterday whilst 'self defrecating'. 262 was on the corner opposite JE JAMES CYCLES. Thanks though.post-188-1221039677_thumb-1.jpgScreenshot_20200315-134402_Photos.jpg

Middlesbrough 1 Blades 0

A blow to our promotion hopes. To be honest, I do not remember being aware that we had lost at Boro that evening or in the next morning. In the next evening Blackpool had lost at home to Hull City which was a boost to our promotion hopes. Again, I do not remember being aware of Blackpool losing. The top of the table after the games played on the 18th was like this.

1. Huddersfield played 35, 49 points
2. Blades 35, 43
3. Cardiff 35, 42
4. Middlesborough 35, 42
5. Blackpool 34, 42
6. Swindon 33, 41
7. QPR 35, 40
8. Blackburn 35, 40
9. Leicester 35, 39

Our remaining games were Leicester (a), Bolton (h), Blackpool (a), Millwall (h), Bristol C (a), Aston Villa (a), Oxford (h)

21/3/1970.

My first away match!

Leicester 2 (Glover, Fern) Blades 1.

My dad took me and my cousin (not sure if it was his first match) to Filbert Street.

Len Glover opened the scoring with a low shot, Blades equalised just before half time and in the Green Un match report "Addison won a shuddering tackle with Sjoberg in midfield, sent Woodward away and, as Woodward's shot eluded Shilton, Reece raced in to slot home". Rodney Fern hit Leicester's 2nd in the 2nd half. We had a "good goal" from Woodward disallowed near the end and I remember Colin Addison protesting towards the ref. After the game my dad, my cousin and I were outside the players entrance looking at our players signing autographs before getting in the coach. The mood didnt seem good as Eddie Colquhoun seemed to shout back at a group of Blades fans. Alan Woodward signalled through the coach window to tell my dad to go round the other side of the coach and my dad lifted me up so that I could push through my match programme through the little sliding window. He then got the players in the coach to sign my programme before pushing the programme back to me through the little sliding window. I was awestruck and shaking like a leaf, got a nod and a wink from Dave Powell who was next to Woody. Have loved Woody since then.

Blackpool's 2-1 win at Carlisle meant that we had dropped down to 3rd place in the table. Boro drew at home to Norwich, Cardiff lost 2-1 at Watford, Swindon drew 3-3 at Bristol City.

The table

1. Huddersfield played 36, 51 points
2. Blackpool 35, 44
3. Blades 36, 43
4. Middlesborough 36, 43
5. Cardiff 36, 42
6. Swindon 34, 42
7. QPR 36, 41
8. Leicester 36, 41

Our remaining games were Bolton (h), Blackpool (a), Millwall (h), Bristol C (a), Aston Villa (a), Oxford (h) . Millwall, Bristol City and Oxford were too far behind in the promotion race. Bolton were fighting against relegation and Aston Villa were rock bottom with only 22 points after 36 games. The Blackpool match was seen as a 4 pointer.

Blades 0 Bolton 1 (Manning)

Watched the match from the BLLT. I think my dad, myself and my cousin missed the start of the match because years later I had discovered from looking at the Green Un match reports in the Sheffield Archives at the Central Library that in the opening minutes of the match, the ref ruled out a goal from Woodward direct from a corner kick at the Kop End. I hadnt realised that for years! The following week the Green Un published two photos of the disallowed goal and it didnt seem that Colquhoun had impeded Alan Boswell (Bolton's keeper). Throughout the match the Blades struggled for a breakthrough on muddy conditions. Late in the game John Manning hit the winner at the Kop End. It was a real blow to our promotion hopes also Blackpool won their home game against Villa by 2-1 (I remember watching Fred Pickering on MOTD hitting the winner with a penalty)

1. Huddersfield played 38, 54 points
2. Blackpool 36, 46
3. Cardiff 38, 45
4. Swindon 36, 45
5. Leicester 38, 45
6. Middlesbrough 38, 45
7. Blades 37, 43
8. QPR 38, 43

A win at Blackpool on Easter Monday was a must! The remaining games were Millwall (h), Bristol C (a), Aston Villa (a), Oxford (h) .

A win at Blackpool on Easter Monday was a must! The remaining games were Millwall (h), Bristol C (a), Aston Villa (a), Oxford (h) .

Len Noad, a journalist in one of the Sundays started his report on the Bolton game with...

'The top and bottom of it is that Sheffield United are not good enough for the First Division and Bolton are barely good enough for the Second - and the net result was Second Division football at just about its worst'.

30/3/1970 (Easter Monday)

My dad and I went to S6 to see Wendy play Spurs. Our late arrival meant that we missed the only goal of the game scored by Spurs' midfielder Alan Mullery in the 4th minute. Our eyes were constantly checking the scoreboard on the bottom of the North Stand as they do updates of Blades away matches every 15 minutes. Near the end of the match it was revealed that Blackpool had scored a late goal which was the crushing blow to our promotion hopes and I remember the look on my dad's face as he stared at the scoreboard. Blackpool's win meant that we were in 7th position and we were 5 points behind them with 4 games left. Wendy's loss meant that, with 3 games left, they were still in 2nd bottom of the 1st division, a point behind Palace (2 games left) and Ipswich (4 games left).

I went to Blackpool - second season in succession that we played at Broomfield Road over an Easter weekend.

The wheels had truly come off the promotion wagon.

We really weren't good enough and wouldn't truly put together a proper promotion team until the following January.

(A dodgy burger at half time meant I was self isolating in the toilet for the rest of the school holidays. )

Was it John Craven that scored the goal?

Blades 3 (Tudor, Currie, Woodward ) Millwall 1 (Possee)

The attendance for the game was 11,537 which was a drop of more than 7,000 from the previous home game 3 days earlier. Derek Possee scored first with a breakaway at the Kop End, not long after, John Tudor equalised with a header. Both goals are the only ones I remember from that night. When I was looking at the match report in the Sheffield Archives 18 years ago, I was surprised that Currie scored with a volley from a Woodward corner. Blades fans older than me or around my age would recall Woody's volleys from Currie corners but that night Bramall Lane witnessed a vice versa of that!

2nd goal. Yet another Woodward corner, this time from the left, ricocheted to Currie fifteen yards out and his right-foot volley exploded high into the right-hand corner of the net before King could make a gesture at a save.

3rd goal. Currie and Tudor, with a cute reverse pass along the back of the penalty, area set up the chance and Woodward, floating into the inside left position, drove it beyond King with a beautifully clean drive.

That night Huddersfield clinched promotion to the 1st division with a draw at Middlesbrough (see video from 2 mins 18 secs below). Blackpool drew 0-0 at Leicester and Swindon won 4-1 at home to Birmingham to move 2 points behind Blackpool (both Swindon and Blackpool had 4 games left)

Was it John Craven that scored the goal?

Yes John Craven in the 65th minute.

Star report .......' When John Flynn deputising for the injured Ted Hemsley and himself hobbling from a late tackle by Fred Pickering tried heading clear but put the ball on the boot of John Craven that was that'.

Three first teamers were absent hurt ... Eddie Colquhoun, Ted Hemsley and Geoff Salmons. Frank Barlow was dropped.

Replacements were - Colin Addison, John Flynn continued to cover for Ted, Ian Mackenzie made his debut and Phil Cliff, first league appearance for 18 months.

Peter Howard reports 'But the man who really turned things United's way was Tony Currie who had a fine match. He walloped a magnificent goal past King in the 50th minute and generally created havoc for the Londoners'.

4/4/1970

Went to S6 to see Wendy play against Everton who clinched the league title with two games left after a home win against WBA three days earlier. When the fixture lists were revealed before the start of the season, the last game of the season for all first and second division clubs (not sure if it was the same for third and fourth division clubs too) were scheduled for either Tuesday 14th or Wednesday 15th April. Not sure if it was the only time a season had final league matches scheduled for midweek dates.

Back to the game at S6, Johnny Morrissey scored the only goal of the game (see photos below) left Wendy still in bottom place with two games left to play. Highlights of the match were shown on MOTD that evening but since then I have not seen any footage of the match.

Bottom four of the first division looked like this

19. Southampton Played 40, 27 points
20. Palace 41, 25
21. Sunderland 40, 25
22. Wendy 40, 24

We won 1-0 at Bristol City with a Eddie Colquhoun goal (see photo below). We had two games left and werent mathematically out of the promotion race yet as Blackpool could only draw at home to QPR. Blackpool had three games left and were 3 points ahead of us

Bri.jpg

In the next day highlights of the L**ds v Burnley match were shown on YTV and Eddie Gray scored two brilliant goals (the second is one of my favourites)

6/4/1970

Palace 1 Man City 0. A vital win in the last game of the season for Palace puts them 3 points ahead of bottom of the table Wendy (who have to play at Man U and at home to Man City) and 2 points ahead of second bottom Sunderland (who have to play at home to Everton and Liverpool).

My first FA Cup final in memory. My dad wanted L**ds to win as he was a big fan of Mick Jones explaining to me that he used to play for us. At the time I couldnt imagine Mick in a Blade shirt so I preferred Chelsea to win. I watched the whole build up to the match on Grandstand, players being interviewed , players profiles etc. I thought it was great.

I hadnt really noticed the poor state of the Wembley pitch that was really cut up after the Horse of the Year was staged at the stadium. Eddie McCreadie's air shot in attempting to boot out Jack Charlton's header and then falling down with his head looking through his legs but the ball had crossed the line for the first goal of the match (see photo below). Eddie Gray ran the show and gave his maker, David Webb, a really hard time (can be seen in below video). Shortly before half time, Gary Sprake made a real howler letting in a soft shot from Peter Houseman. Over the years I look at the footage of the goal, I love to look at how Jack Charlton reacted to the soft equaliser. During the interval I remember my dad doing an impression of Sprake's howler.

Chelsea played better in the 2nd half and you can see in the video that Jack Charlton didnt trust Sprake as he was on the goalline behind Sprake quite a few times when Chelsea had a shooting chance and then telling Sprake to get up quickly if he is on the floor. Late in the game Mick Jones hit a tremendous left footed shot that found its way to the net and my dad was delighted for him (see photo below). We thought there was no way back for Chelsea but Ian Hutchinson took the game to extra time by heading in a cross that had Sprake watching the ball helplessly as you can see in the photo below (saw the photo in the next morning's paper and it was a photo that I have not forgotten). I think both teams did a lap of honour thanking the fans after the match ended in a 2-2 draw. The replay in 10 days time!

Remember it well. Leeds were going for a treble & ended up with nothing! Must have been one of the last cup finals played in April?

13/4/1970

Aston Villa 1 Blades 0

The result didnt really matter for us because a Fred Pickering hat trick for Blackpool at Preston was enough for Blackpool to return to the 1st division after a 3 year absence. The result didnt matter for Villa too because in the next evening Charlton beat Bristol City 2-1 meant relegation to 3rd division for the first time in Villa's and Preston's histories.
