My take on things...
28/07/08 – Mansfield Town 1 – 3 Sheffield United
The Blades took quite a strong squad down to Field Mill to face Blue Square Premier side Mansfield Town. The starting line-up was interspersed with academy talent, most noticeably, Kyle Naughton, who appears to have an important part to play in this season's plans if his number of pre-season appearances are anything to go by.
It was the Blades who kicked off but Mansfield managed some early forays into United's box; Mark Stallard was particularly unlucky not to take the lead for the home side, mis-hitting his shot while in acres of space to send it well wide of Bennett's goal. Matt Lowton, starting in central defence with Ehiogu looked particularly shaky in the early stages when under pressure.
United opened the scoring however, with Billy SHARP. The ball ran loose down the left of the box and Sharp used both pace (!) and strength (!) to cut inside and fire past Paddy Gamble in the Stags' net.
Lowton appeared to grow in confidence sandwiched between Sun Ji Hai and Ehiogu and was on hand to authoritatively head clear as Mansfield threatened to build. Montgomery appears to be his usual bullish self after recovering from injury, passing accurately and confidently (Linz: although Robbie was on hand to point out the one pass from him that did go astray). Monty and Armstrong seem to play well together, the former threading a ball through for the latter to launch an inviting cross from the left which no one in the box was brave enough to challenge for.
A long throw from Naughton brought about a period of sustained pressure from the Blades, as Sharp had his header towards goal saved and Mansfield struggled to clear their lines and as soon as the ball was lofted upfield by the Stags, it came straight back at them. The Blades were doubly unlucky moments later as Jon Stead and Lee Hendrie both hit the post while Sharp couldn't bring the rebounded ball under control in order to get his shot away in the confusion.
STEAD made amends for his miss only minutes later with a touch of class on the edge of the box, turning his defender before firing the ball across the goalkeeper and into the top left hand corner.
Armstrong was making a nuisance of himself in the box but couldn't produce the power to make any of his headers towards goal count as Mansfield started to push on to claw a goal back before the break.
Michael Blackwood forced Bennett to tip the ball over the top after Lowton had stood off in the box and allowed him to get a shot away while Matthew Somner could only head over from the resulting corner. It wasn't long before Blackwood found himself involved again, this time crossing for STALLARD to tap the ball past Bennett. Mansfield pushed forward again, Ehiogu, enjoying a physical battle with Jason Lee throughout the game, was adjudged to have been pushed by the Stags' veteran trialist.
The home stand appeared to have an ASBO section seated closest to us and kept us amused with all kinds of “ground-breaking” chants throughout the match – an example if ever there is one as to why 15 year olds shouldn't be given free tickets to matches. I can only envisage a near-future involving probation officers for many of them.
By the by, the Blades continued to assert pressure on the home side, Lowton helping build from the back with a good ball forward to Hendrie. Stead, then Monty received the ball in the attack, Monty then back-heeling for Armstrong who just failed to get the ball under control in time to get a cross in.
Gamble had to be on his toes right up to the break as Stead volleyed from the edge of the box and Naughton, pushing forward, forced a save from a long-range shot. The last piece of action before the break saw Gamble making a fingertip save from Stead's powerful header.
The second half was a slightly more mundane affair. Jordan Robertson came on as a second half sub replacing Jon Stead. The main occurrences during the early stages of the second half were Sun Ji Hai getting a tasty challenge before being subbed and our trusty camera deciding to break. Mansfield also thought they'd equalised early on but the linesman immediately flagged for offside.
United's third goal came by way of a penalty. Robertson had turned his marker before unleashing a shot which Gamble could only parry, conceding a corner. Just as Hendrie was taking it, Ehiogu was shoved in the back and the referee had no choice but to award a penalty. SHARP stepped up and fired into the bottom left hand corner as the keeper dived the other way.
