This is a really awkward fixture in my eyes and is coming at a time when United have yet to find any sort of rhythm. I think Speed will stick to our usual 4-3-3/4-5-1 in this game which would be the safest option in all fairness but I would be sorely tempted to go with four across the middle and go man for man against them. My lineup would be:-

------------------------------Simonsen------------------------------
-----Calve------------Morgan-----------Bartley------------Jordan----
-----Yeates--------Montgomery---------Britton------------(Loan)----
-----------------------Evans-----------Cresswell---------------------

I hate leaving Wardy out but he has struggled the last few games and needs to be dropped temporarily IMO. If Morgs doesn't make it, his replacement is an obvious yet worrying one :)

Any ideas why were still so far off selling out for such a big game? the allocation wasn't that much in the first place was it?

£29 might have something to do with it. I'm going to this one but will be missing most away games this season for the first time in a long while mainly due to price. Money's starting to get tight for most people nowadays and whilst wages are being frozen or reduced for lots of people prices for many goods/services are continuing to creep up or remain at a stupid level. I can't count many games recently that have been worth £30 (despite having repeatedly paid it!). Disposable income is getting lower and lower for many and I'm sure many will either drop out of expensive away games through necessity or choice over the next year or so. I can only hope that clubs like Leeds, Forest, Hull etc stop taking the piss and charge a more reasonable price in the future. I mean even Doncaster are charging £28! Blackpool fans travelling to Chelsea over the weekend had a minimum ticket price of £60. It's a disgrace really that we're fleeced in this way so footballers can get such crazy wages.

It's about time there was a change in the way many fans are being priced out of the game.

What do people seriously think would be a fair price? I'd be interested to see. My personal thoughts are:

Cup/playoff finals etc £40 - £75
Premier League - £20 - £35
Championship - £15 - £20
League One - £10 - £15
League Two - £5 - £10

It'd be interesting to see someone try and push this through, be it the fans associations, fa or even government.

Very good point Blade. This is why Derby, Leeds and Forest have all missed out on income from me and my two lads this season. We normally got to at least one away game a month. We have not been to a single away league game this season. Good price structure too.

As Blade said, its down to price. Football clubs are charging too much and losing their fans but they're obviously maximising their income this way so they wont care.

I cant go, its too much. I'm planning to go see my mate in Hull next month and he's coming to the KC with me when we play there. I'm buying his ticket so at £50+ for that game I cant afford any away trips before that.....

I already have far too many outgoings to spend £60-70 a time on mediocre second tier football. Football clubs can take the piss if they want but they wont out of me. A season ticket is enough :)

Finals/Semi-Finals: £30-£40
Premier League: £20-£30
Championship: £15-£25
League One: £10-£15
League Two: £8-£10
Pigs: £5 donation from the club

Bearing in mind that a recent report stated football tickets would now be an average of £5 to buy if they had gone up with the rate of inflation.....I think the above structure would barely be fair, yet realistic.

Strict pricing structures will never happen. As a business they can charge whatever they like and they know that as far as their supporters are concerned, they offer a unique product that they can get anywhere else. There isnt more than one 'Notts County' for example.

I would go out with the following.

------------------------------Simonsen------------------------------
-----Calve------------Morgan-----------Bartley------------Jordan----
-----Ward--------------Ertl--------------Britton------------Yeates----
-----------------------Evans-----------Cresswell---------------------

However i expect speed to play

------------------------------Simonsen------------------------------
-----Calve------------Morgan-----------Bartley------------Jordan----
-----------------------------------Ertl-----------------------------------
-----Ward---------Montgomery---------Britton----------Cresswell----
----------------------------------Evans--------------------------------

My prediction is a 3-1 defeat unfortunately with weeds going 2-0 up we get one back in the 2nd half then when pushing for an equaliser they get a third.

Where is everyone drinking before hand? Is there anywhere near the train station that is good for away fans?

I think we are in for another spanking here. This has come at completely the wrong time and I'd be over the moon if we got anything from the game. Leeds are not bad and we are looking pretty poor at the moment. People will despute this, but our defence could get torn apart on Saturday. That said, Leeds defence is pretty poor, but will our lacklustre strike force do anything about it?

My prediction is 4-2 to Leeds.

I have to say that I'd go with 4-5-1 at this game. (Begrudgingly) I'd adopt a Blackwell style tactic of not wanting to lose. Still, I'd expect us to pay football and pass, but keep it tight. My team would be:

------- SS

Calve Nos (Morgs if fit) Bartley Jordan

------------ Britton
------------- Ertl

Yeates Ward Cressy
------------Ched

Ward would play as an attacking central midfilder. I'd expect him to track back, drop in and muck in when we don't have the ball. However, I'd want him playing off Ched and getting forward when possible. The team is full of battlers and is a defensive formation, hence we could keep it tight.

All of this said I think Speed will play the same team he has done for the last 3/4 games. The invincible Monty will play of course.

I really hope so, without him and Morgs on Sat we had no leader and Ertl is proving to be a complete headless chicken with a worse shot than Monty

Leeds. So good, they're a whopping 1pt ahead of us.

-------------Simmo-------------
Calve, Lowton, Bartley, Jordan
-------------Britton-------------
--Ward, Monty, Quinn, Yeates-
-----------Bogdanovic----------

I don't trust Nossy whatsoever. I've never been less confident in a player than I was him v Scunny. I know the two CB's are both young and inexperienced but I'd prefer that to Nossy in there (maybe a testament to how little faith I have in him).

Boogy has to be given a chance up top. I have faith Ched will come good, but Boogy is a proven scorer and I'm sure he'll be banging them in for us if eh got more than the last 5/10 minutes of a match.

Yeates has to be given a chance from the start, we have to go at Leeds from the off and try and dominate with our attack, IF we are going in as under dogs, we might as well give it a shot.

Quinn in for Erlt simply because I don't think that Erlt has done enough to earn a starting place, and I think Quinn could work well up there with Monty, as opposed to having two defensively minded players up there. Monty can't play the killer pass, maybe Quinn can't either, but I think he could definitely help provide service for Yeates, Boogy and Ward.

UTB!!

League One - £10 - £15
League Two - £5 - £10

This is FAR too low. How are they meant to turn a profit at those prices, especially the clubs that only draw a few thousand?

I'd expect to pay more than that to see a band of average fame or to watch a film, so a football club is justified in charging at least £15 I reckon, even at that level. I mean, what would non-league be? £2.50?

Everything is down to demand. If a club can get 10 000 for the price of 40 and 12000 for the price of 30 they sure as hell won't care about the missing 2000. It's a company like any other, except for the fact that they pay a footballer 100k a month which is just stupid but yet again (demand...)

exactly (well supply and demand). It's (fairly) simply economics. Clubs set prices (or try to) to maximise profits, which happens to be where demand and supply meet. Chelsea set their prices at £60 because they are popular, very good, the supporters are generally wealthy (all demand factors) and small-ish stadium (supply factor). This high demand and short supply results in a high price.

What Lund mentions is the theory in economics called elastcity of demand, which is basically how demand responds to changes in price. Football clubs will only lower prices, if they can get a more than proportionate increase in demand. But this only happens when goods are elastic (luxury). I'd argue that football tickets are actually inelastic (i.e. demand moves by a less than proportionate amount compared to price). This basically means that if clubs drop prices then they lose out. Take an example:

United charge approx £22 for a ticket and get 20k*. That's 440k revenue from an average match. if they decreased prices to £15 (as many suggested) then how many extra fans would come? I'd hazard a guess at somewhere between 1-2k, maybe 3. 23000 x 15= 345k revenue. Even if an extra 9000 fans turned up they still wouldn't make the same money as charging £22**.

Chairman are not stupid and they know all the above. Chairman at Leeds and Derby (both charging £28 a ticket) will have worked out that 1000 away fans at £28 (28k) is better than 1200 at £23 (27k).

* yes this is too simple and doesn't take into accounts season tickets etc, but it is illustrative.

** this doesn't take into account extra revenue from food and drinks, but this could easily be taken into account and wouldn't make a massive difference.

Cheers Ollessendro for making it more clear. I agree with what you say full stop.

no worries.

people tend not to realise that economics is at the heart of anything. There was a thread a while ago about footballers wages (don't know if you saw it) and people were debating away. I made the suggestion that it was all simple economics (which it is). At first people where sceptical, but most seem to come around when I started to explain. Footballers wages are determined by supply and demand, just like everyone else's wages and just like prices. It's simply the supply and demand for labour. Simple economics explains why doctors get paid more than nurses, pilo9ts more than stewardesses and Didier Drogba more than Ched Evans.

Up the Blades.

I think this depends how we set out to play. Leeds look quite happy against longer ball sides wereas in the main those footballing side have posed problems for them.

If he play like we did on Tuesday (minus the shite defending) I think we could pick up an easy win, especially if Naylor plays as he just isn't good enough.
If we try and rough it and go longer I think we could get turned over.

Right, here's hoping they do well today. I really don't want to hear the Elland Road crowd, and I'd really like to be able to have a gloat with all my Leeds friends...

Our free kicks are the lowest quality I've ever seen. Hit the wall and see what happens...

Low quality free kicks, powderpuff attacks (only four goals all season), a distinctly dodgy and slightly scary defense. 0-0 is the best we can hope for today.

So Wardy comes on as a sub & gets himself sent off. If he just concentrated on playing football instead of all the stupid stuff he seems to think is clever, he might make a decent player. As it is, he's becoming a bit of a liability, and beginning to look a bit of a twat.
