To be honest that is slim pickings.... There’s not one of them that’s you’d could say with confidence would be a success imo. I’m not convinced half of them are any better than what we have.

Baldock and Danny ward might be attainable. Think Gallaghers wages are going to prove to be a stumbling block. I would have thrown Mcburie in there but can only see Swansea using him in the championship.

With that in mind do you reckon we’d be as well trying to look abroad and take a gamble - a chunk of change to a less ‘financially secure’ league might get us a better player with more affordable wage demands. Though it would be a gamble it Worked out ok for the likes of Bristol city and Brentford previously.

Either that or a loan is looking like our best option to me.

Explosive talent.

Happily put a grand on it mate?
I was just asking what makes you so sure? I never even said I believed he was. I said out of the rumours them 2 seem the most likely.

What seems more feasible? Peter Crouch or a youthful ex-united player who is a fan?

Irrespective of what people say, DCL (and I wasn't a fan, just did some Youtube scouting) is by far the best option for United. Are Everton going to let go?
Yes if he isn't in their plans - think signings to be made post WC.
Can we afford him, yes if we give Everton anything toward the cost of a player who costs but is of no value to them.
Possible, maybe.

Who are they then?

"Chris Wilder says the arrival of two new centre-forwards is designed to complement, not replace, Billy Sharp and Leon Clarke."

I am a fan of both, but I have to say that is slightly worrying to hear. If we don’t think that given the resources we have at Championship that it’s likely we can improve on the two players in their 30s that we signed at League 1 level, then that’s frankly a concern. We should have signed 2 strikers to ideally ultimately displace both last summer – instead we signed a reasonable back-up player, and a player that wasn’t even a reasonable back-up player. We need to be adding quality this window in that area – we simply cannot expect Clarke and Sharp to carry the burden on a regular basis. They admirably exceeded expectations last season – it’s a tall order to expect them to replicate that.

I'm not convinced of some of the names bandied around are affordable in terms of outright wage and also impact on current staff.

Certainly Hogan seems to be too expensive. McCormack also would be on a huge wage so I'd forget alleviating Villa's financial problems for them.

I can see us going for Gallagher all the way until it won't work. He's a good age too and would be a sensible profile player to invest in, in terms of development, succession planning and potential re-sale. Otherwise, Charlie Wyke might be another option though this is shopping from below once more. I don't see too many good target men.

Beyond this, McGoldrick might not be a bad option. No fee involved, quick, experience at this level, taller than you might think. Probably more assured than taking a punt on Eisa, though I would rule this out. Adam Armstrong is an intriguing one. Still quite young, quick and scores goals at this level and the one below. Also a good age and probably affordable.

For the players who would demand 20-40k wages, I'm not seeing much value there. Even Hogan did little at Villa to be honest. Grabban seems expensive at 5m to me given he'll have little re-sale value either, already being 30. If we wanted him, Chris would have raised it when Brooks was in discussions.

Reasons why one of them isn’t going to be DCL.

1) His wages
2) He played more than enough games in the Premier last year
3) There will be more better placed clubs than us who will want his services
4) He won’t want to take a step back in his career

If there’s anymore that I’ve missed you can add to it if you want.

He isn’t coming back to the lane.

Could I add:

5) Hugely overrated.
6) Don’t want him.

I was thinking more from DCL side of things but yes, you can add them. :)

I’m not sure Wilder would pick him every week either and that’s a big thing when a team loans a player out, they generally want them starting games of football.

Peter Crouch.

I would say Crouch would be more feasible as he has already spoken out about wanting to fight for a place and wants to stay at stoke. That suggests he's leaving. I don't think we're in for Crouch either.

DCL dropping to the Championship for anybody is a ridiculous idea at his stage of his career. He's 21 and just played 40 odd games for a top ten premiership club. He started 23 in all competitions.
If Everton want to ship him out on loan, it will be to the Premier League. I said earlier in the thread, he'll be capped by England next season.

I'm not sure ee have the scouting infrastructure in place. Also, CW doesn't seem a fan of the apprach. Whilst we can't confidently say that they would be successful, it seems likely that 2 from that list would be an improvement on Evans, Lavery, Donaldson, Hanson etc. Thus improving the competition with Clarke and Sharp.

All this talk of Charlie Wyke: we could have signed him when we signed Hanson. He arguably would have had the same impact (he'd almost certainly have scored more goals) and we'd be miles better off now having spent £250k on Wyke than £150k on Hanson, paying Hanson to leave then paying what is probably now a higher price for Wyke.

Never mind.

And if not Wyke, then at least Tom Elliott, who is now at Millwall as a fit for purpose impact sub target man. He'd have been about 100k.

Shocking decision really.

'Shocking decision' - what a joke comment.

Sorry.

Big Jim was ace, we wouldn't have been promoted without Big Jim. Awesome signing, great decision. Thanks Big Jim! GLTTL

That better?

How do you know we made a decision for it to be shocking? Or is it because you base this on you 'I know best' attitude when it comes to transfers?

That's true we could have had Wyke but Hanson did an important job in those 15 games to be fair and Wyke has being playing League 2 and we needed someone proven at League One level.

I can't see us going after Wyke now but we'll see.

If DCL is capped by England during next season I'll donate 100 quid to wherever.
