On Page 81 of today's programme, if anyone missed it, there was a short piece explaining that I’ve written a book about the challenges of following England’s Ashes tour round Australia last winter - whilst suffering with early onset Parkinson's Disease. I took three Blades shirts with me, as well as a lime green bucket hat, and never missed watching a blades game, even at 3am.
My first game was Fulham at the Lane, 16 October 1976, my dad wanting to see Best and Moore, which was 50 years ago this month. Beating the European champions in August 1978 cemented my love of BDTBL, so I became a Junior Blade in 1982, and I have had a season ticket for the same seat on the Kop since it was seated in 1991.
The book features my love of the blades throughout, including watching us thrash the Wendies on my phone whilst at a Kaiser Chief gig in Perth, singing along to George Baldock’s song with my daughter on Melbourne’s Southbank on Xmas day as we heard the strains of a band playing a cover of Bowie, and attending a blades curry club evening in Brisbane, the furthest ever held from BDTBL. Professional artist, and good friend, Bob Bernard, a more recently converted blade, kindly painted all the illustrations, for which I will always be grateful. 100% of author proceeds selfishly go to the charity, Cure Parkinson's.
As very few fans buy programmes now I thought it might interest a few on here.
