I was at my maternal grandmother's house in Hartley Brook Road and reading in the papers that we had won 1-0 at Carlisle. I learned that Wendy's home game against Coventry had got postponed due to the snow and frost. Looking at the TV guide in the same paper it stated that the YTV Soccer programme would be showing highlights of Wendy v Coventry and I was wondering if the camera would be filming the snow at Hillsborough for many minutes despite that there would be no spectators at the ground. My twin uncles would always watch the soccer programme on YTV every Sunday. I asked them to put the tv on to watch the programme but my Uncle David said "Not going to switch the tv on as it would be a waste of money because Wendy's match got postponed yesterday!" Not sure if my Uncle David knew that the Soccer programme would be showing highlights of a match from a different region! Granada's match was Liverpool v Arsenal.

I remember clearly when my dad was picking me up from a children's xmas party, organised by his work, he was telling me "United won 6-0" . I was impressed that the Blades had won 6-0.

That day I visited my maternal grandmother's in Hartley Brook Road and there were load of Xmas presents in her living room for my grandmother's 10 grandchildren to pick up. My dad was off with some of my mum's brothers to watch Wendy v Arsenal. I was a bit confused about my Blade supporting dad going to watch a Wendy match and I still remember clearly seeing him put on his coat on leaving the house! I dont think I was really aware about the Blades playing away to Norwich that day, probably because I was more excited about Xmas. Both Wendy and Blades drew 1-1.

I must have stayed over at my grandmother's house that evening because I remember half watching YTV highlights of Wendy v Arsenal at the house and my dad getting my attention to watch Jack Whitham's equaliser and I was being concerned for Whitham as he suffered a minor eye injury. My dad assured me that he was ok to continue playing. Anglia TV had highlights of our match at Norwich but I dont remember if the goals at Carrow Road was shown on YTV after the match at S6. yeah this is the one silent will never forget the stench from the gasworks as you approached leeds road 4/5k blades fans completely taking over udders cowshed end pushing home fans on to the big terrace at the side with the shoreham boot boys chant ringing out uncle ronnie will probably remember this boxing day game mind dismal performance on the pitch 2nd best all day and lucky to only get away with a 2 - 1 defeat utb

I was aware that we were playing against Everton at home in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. Dont think my dad went to the match. I was half watching the Grandstand programme on BBC tv and there was a Rugby match on. According to the Genome Radio Times 1923-2009 Website, the listing that day was

I was aware of the final score (probably found it out from the results service rather than the teleprinter service.


Alan Ball opened the scoring with a penalty (Hodgy brought down Johnny Morrissey who had pounced on a poor backpass from Badger) in the 1st half








A clash of heads between Gil Reece and Everton's Tommy Wright and the trainers are busy with their sponge and buckets. Wright had to be replaced by sub Sandy Brown.

I remember this Everton game as if it was yesterday. A real giant killing. Everton were a quality team and we tore them apart.

The atmosphere was probably the best I'd ever experienced, at that stage at the Lane. The kop was packed.

I had a reel to reel tape recorder and I recorded the TV commentary of the highlights that were shown on YTV the next day. Keith Macklin the commentator. Even though there were gaps in the commentray because it was from TV I listened to that tape each night for about a fortnight. While lots of 14 year olds were tuned into Radio Caroline or Luxembourg I was listening to this TV commentary.

Today I realise the football pyramid may not allow us to dine at the top table competively but I want us to be a team that when it comes to taking on those more successful clubs we're ready to give them ' a bloody nose'. That thought may well have started 55 years ago.

(As an aside. Alan Ball was not always a popular figure with Blades fans, Outside of United he was my favourite player. Very skillfull but a huge will to win attitude. He was Everton's best player that day and reading those reports this confirms that, )

yes me anall bornablade the shoreham was absolutely rammed that day and we thoroughly deserved the win 2 great headers from addison and reece both from woody crosses everton fans on the lane end wernt happy and started burning their scarves at the end of the game when the 2nd went in the kop just exploded and most finished 10 yards further down that they started great days great memories keep em coming silent utb

yeah we were on there for some unknown reason united sold us tickets for derbys side of the popside but coppers let us climb over to get in with rest of united fans got pelted with allsorts lol derby tried 3 times to get over to our side but came unstuck every time must have been 3/4k blades on there that day mind usual baseball ground result for us lol

Today marks my 55 years as a committed Blade!

For the first time I was looking forward to watching the "Soccer" programme on YTV (usually aired between 2.15pm to 3.15pm every Sunday) on the black and white tv set. My dad told me that Blades v Everton would be the main match and we watched it together even though I didnt really know the names of our players. I can recollect seeing our goals and the players celebrating but not anything else (saw in a match report years later that three of our efforts in the first half had hit the woodwork). After the match the programme presenter, Keith Macklin, interviewed Colin Addison and Alan Hodgkinson. After the programme I was with a ball at the back of the settee (the imaginary goal) and replaying the match. From that day I started learning the names of our players (Colin Addison was my first favourite), looking at the league tables in the papers and discovering which division the teams are in. We were near the top of the 2nd division table and Wendy were at the bottom of the 1st division. In the next day I started to discover which teams the older pupils in my school support (I was the first in my class to fall in love with football). In the next few weeks the below photo was up on my bedroom wall. My dad could see that I would be "ready" to watch every home game.

I found out the score when my dad bought a Green Un (I think either from a newspaper seller, a pub or a shop in Stephenson Place, Chesterfield) and I was waiting in the car. When my dad brought the Green Un in the car I learned that we got hammered at Cardiff
