My dad was at the 1st replay at City Ground. Ended in a 0-0 draw. Hodgy made a couple of great saves in the below footage

2nd replay at St Andrews. Lost 2-0

Has that footage been put up recently? I came across it today looking for other material from 1961. I missed the replays because of school. My brother went to both because he was in 6th form and had greater freedom. Not sure it helped his A-level grades, mind.

I remember this well Silent it should not have gone beyond the first game at Elland Road as there was nowt wrong with Doc Pace’s goal right in front of me and years later the ref said his one regret was disallowing that goal as he got it wrong.
I went to all three games with my Dad and I still have some hatred left for Leicester City although it has faded somewhat over the years

Not for the first match (Elland Road) and third (St Andrews)
I wonder what the selection process was? Maybe the different clubs were more/less amenable. I would have thought Derby and Forest were the obvious venues, or Villa if they wanted a bigger venue, but then I don't know what the respective grounds were like in 1961. Better than playing them at Wembley anyway!

The first replay played at forest was a four game if I remember rightly, had the day off school to go .Shouldnt have gone to a replay as has been said !,Doc's goal ruled out for handball he showed the mark on his shoulder (shirt) where the ball struck him. After the first draw at Leeds the expense of the first replay left me short on money so missed the 2nd at St Andrew's .
As we all know our nightmare semi - final record struck there.
It had been our 1st FA cup semi since we lost to Arsenal in the 1936 final. It was another 30 years before we had another.
Luckily or unluckily depends how you look at it a few more have been played since as we have lost them all maybe next time we might crack the hoodoo.

Are there many full matches/extended highlights to watch of United in the 60's-80's periods? I grew up in the wrong era I think (90s/00s) but always love watching older matches, it's much more my kind of football in many ways and certainly more akin to the game I played myself!

go on youtube and type in match of the day sheffield united goes from 60s to 1990 good watch

I was at all 3 with my dad , should have won first one when doc pace scored late on ref gave then linesman put his flag up , devastated.

Some of my schoolmates went to the 2nd replay, the supporters club coach pulled up right outside the school, they had to run right past the headmasters window, he saw them and as a punishment for skipping school they had to write an essay on the match.

as a 9 year old i was devastated when we lost at st andrews and in later years my future father in law who was at elland road always insisted that doc paces goal should have stood and that it definetly wasnt hand ball
I was there and saw a perfectly good Doc goal disallowed.

It was a great disappointment not to get to the final. I can still recall that devastating feeling when Graham Shaw missed that penalty at St. Andrews.

Well, I‘ve now discovered what it’s like to have the glory seekers appearing from nowhere. For months I’ve been posting stuff on the league matches from 1960-61, matches played in front of small crowds, and a couple of bits of film of semi-final replays are posted, and suddenly, everyone claims they were there.
(I don’t mean any of that, but I would hope some more of you might be able to chip in with reminiscences on the 60 Years Ago this month thread, especially if you can fill in some of the gaps and correct some of my errors.) And on New Year’s Eve the journey to promotion and the semifinals really begins...

61 semi final was before my time but i think I'm right in saying we could well have got Barnsley instead of Leicester in the last four. Didn't Barnsley get a replay back at Oakwell v Leicester in the quarters. If it had been Barnsley in the semi's was there any mention at the time were the game would have been played? I guess the logical one would have been at Hillsborough?
